We have people complaining that the head football coach doesn't have an eye for talent, can't hire the right assistants and holds on to them too long then in the next breath thinks he should be put in charge of hiring head coaches for the entire athletic department. Whether you agree with any or even some of that, you literally can't make this stuff up.... For starters, I would hope they would do a national search like they did last time. Given the upgrades and commitment to athletics the University has shown, I would see it being an even more attractive job than it previously was. If you want to look internally (which is should definitely not be limited to), Mannausau applied last time but his career path has veered even further away from an AD type role and Martinson is very well respected by his peers. Similar to last time, I think one or both would get a fair look and the best candidate would be given the job.

Well, we've finally hit galaxy brain portion of the offseason and it isn't even 72 hours old. First off, being a D2 Athletic Director vs a D1 Athletic Director are completely different things. And the landscape of college athletics has changed just slightly over the last 25-30 years. This isn't a knock on RT (or BS) but things like this are why it is tough to take most of the commentary here seriously any more.

Had not heard Bohl turning down SMU before? Why would he do that and then end up at Wyoming? Seems like a bad miscalculation if true. Not disagreeing with what you said, just pointing out that coaches leaving NDSU every 5 years to bigger things (shockingly) isn't accurate at all.

Except that isn't true: Bohl was at NDSU for 11 seasons. Klieman was there for 8 season, 5 as head coach. Entz has been there 10 seasons, in his 5th as head coach.

On top of that, schools also aren't going to overcount playoff attendance as they have to pay a percentage (or the guarantee, whichever is larger) of sales to the NCAA. Can't remember if it is still the case, but I also seem to remember some sort of limit on what you could set the lowest price at and it correlated to season ticket prices. So you couldn't sell a bunch of $5 tickets to fill up the place. Might have been some sort of exclusion for student tickets though.

Go undefeated and there's nothing to worry about, blah, blah but between that, the 2015 screw job and the faux seed for Weber last year....it's beyond ridiculous. Add in a few hockey things (BU at Scheels, overtime game against UMD) and when rules and standards need to be changed after the fact and you're on the wrong side of every one of them, not sure what to say anymore.

Never say never but the only schools that historically have put in more aggressive bids are either likely to be seeds or teams we can't play in the first round. Very confident UND’s bid was aggressive again.

No on is arguing that it sucks. And it isn't that nothing can be done about it, they have actually made some decent strides the last few years. The staff and athletic department would love nothing more to get more D1 home games. As mentioned, no different than the other Dakota schools. The options are to try to find money games on the road, where you're likely going to be a significant underdog, play smaller schools to get more guys some playing time and at least have a few home games or completely overpay to convince some team to come, and even then, a lot of teams aren't going to bother because they spend their guarantee trying to travel up here. They need to continue to work with NDSU and to a lesser extend USD/SDSU to try to get teams two games for one travel itinerary. That's likely going to be the best chance to continue to make improvements. As previously mentioned, the conference helping out even further would be ideal. Getting more D1 games on the schedule will help everyone's SOS and possible tournament seed for the winner.

That was absolutely a poorly placed ball. Strong or weak arm, that's a decision he's rarely made and was much out of character. Not sure what he saw or thought the receiver was doing.

Really curious who this "crowd" actually is? The casual fan that shows up to one game a year (NDSU or SDSU)? Not sure I've talked to a single person who hasn't been frustrated or confused on the regression since the NDSU game. They show flashes of that on offense and defense at different times and then proceed to just find ways to do things that make no sense.

Don't disagree with this but if Belquist pulls down that ball in the endzone or Wes catches that ball on the last drive, things probably look at little different. Both of those balls were put were they needed to be. Not routine catches but I'd guess both of those guys wish they had another shot at those.

They changed it in 2016. I believe they can go up to at least 3 years (unless they have further modified it). To that point, SDSU could have moved on from Stiegelmeier multiple times over his two decades with no buyout.

Guess it must be something in the Dakotas. Last year Nielson got an extension coming off a 3-8 season with a 42% winning percentage. Stiegelmeyer got plenty of extensions while stuck between that 5-8 regular season win mark.

Really good question. In Minnesota, the legislature covered it. Concordia is private, so no concern there. NDSU is a state funded agency. I haven't seen anything on any SBoHE agendas or minutes that approve something like that, so that is pretty interesting. Wonder how this plays into the funding formula as well?

Yes it does. It's an algorithm, calculates data points to comes up with a range of outcomes and then shows the most likely scenarios. It doesn't predict the future and tell you which data point within the set is going to hit every game. I'm sure I don't need to explain how statistics and probabilities work to a smart guy like you though. Going into the week, it predicted that NDSU was going to lose to SDSU by around 11 points. Wasn't too far off. And as much as I hate to admit it, with the current data points, I think NDSU is closer to #4 in the nation than they are #12 or #15 or wherever they are. There's two weeks left that could definitely change as more data points are calculated into the equation. Regardless, I hope they miss the playoffs because the selection committee leaves them out at 7-4. However them going 6-5 and plummeting in every poll, human and computer, would be acceptable as well. Massey also says that the top 9 teams are in the Big Sky or MVFC and Furman is #11 and not #2. I have a hard time disagreeing with that and if we play Thanksgiving weekend, would love to be fed in Furman instead of a seed from the Big Sky or MVFC.

The discussion was program progression. Overall, the program is in a better spot and has continued to trend in the correct direction. There are different levels of success. No one has said we're at a spot where anyone is completely happy, 100% satisfied or thinks there isn't more work to do or we've constantly been at a level of success where we would all like to see. But it wouldn't be the same beating of the dead horse if someone didn't pretend that was the case.

You said they haven't made substantial progress. I presented evidence that shows the contrary. The program has and continues to progress in the right direction. Moving into the top 10/5 and into the quarters/semis/finals is the next step. I know its just a dumb computer algorithm and not an expert football mind, so dismiss it however you want. But just wanted to present some actual unbiased data to the conversation.
