  1. if i read that correctly, you just said that i am insecure about hockey's lack of commercial success? that has got to be the longest stretch i've ever known somebody to make in an effort to bash another person. i mean, seriously, insecure about the commercial success of a sport i like? does that even make sense to anybody? let's see, what else do i like? how about green olives on my pizza? could i possibly be insecure that pepperoni is a far more popular pizza topping? how about the grateful dead? could i possibly be insecure that britney spears has sold more records? how about football? could i possibly be insecure that more people in the world watch the world cup championship than the super bowl? c'mon mplsbison, tell me more about my insecurities seeing as how you obviously know me so well having never met me or had a conversation with me. pfft. insecure about the commercial success of hockey. what a gem.
  2. i'd like this idea if it weren't for the fact that next year we're already going to have two wcha teams with horses for their mascot, both mavericks (msu and uno) it would seem a little strange if 1/4 of the league had horse mascots. when you consider that both st cloud and michigan tech are the huskies and duluth is the bulldogs, that would mean that half (6 of 12) teams in the wcha would either have dogs or horses as their mascot. maybe then we could change the league name to dpshl (dog and pony show hockey league), which our officials try to turn it into sometimes.
  3. this is a topic i've brought up with friends and co-workers for years and this year i decided to post it here. i was going to post it the day after the sioux lost to yale, but i wanted to let our collective sioux-fan heads cool a bit. now seems like a good time, though. the issue is the short break after the conference tournaments and the start of the ncaa tournament. it doesn't make any sense to send the best college hockey teams in the country to a single-elimination tournament while they're all still licking their wounds from the conference tournaments. the ncaa tournament is supposed to determine which is the best college hockey team in the country so let's give the players the rest they need to compete at their highest level. winning a conference tournament in a tough conference like the wcha, ccha, or hockey east should be an honor that all teams strive for. instead, winning one of those tournaments usually means playing on shaky legs in the ncaa regionals. so how can this problem be avoided? the simple answer is obvious: take the weekend after the conference tournaments off unfortunately, that answer doesn't satisfy other ncaa problems that would arise, such as: 1. ending the college hockey season the same week as the college basketball season 2. not playing ncaa tournament college hockey games at the same time as the final four games that's why i think the college hockey season should just start a week earlier than it currently starts. here's the schedule comparison using this year as an example: conference champoinships: march 20 move to march 13 ncaa tournament regionals: march 26 - 28 stay the same frozen four semi-finals : april 8 move to april 2 frozen four championship: april 10 move to april 4 this set-up gives the teams 12 - 13 hockey-game-free days before their first ncaa tournament game. teams would still have to win back-to-back games in the regionals to advance to the frozen four, just as they do now, but they'd only have 4 - 5 hockey-game-free days between winning a regional final and playing in a frozen four semi-final game, which i think is fine since they already had a week off before the tournament started and everybody would be in the same boat. one notable change i've made here is that the frozen four would be played on a friday and a sunday rather than a thursday and a saturday. doing this allows the basketball semi-finals to be played on the saturday in between, which would be april 3 in my example - the very same day the basketball semi-finals were played this year. i don't see the change from a thursday/saturday format to a friday/sunday format making that much difference. if people are going to take thursday off for games, then why not friday instead? this is only one option to make it work. the main problem i'm trying to address though is seeing the better teams in the country playing tired against weaker teams that have had time off. i'm sure there a host of other scheduling changes that would suffice. the questions are: will any of this ever be considered? and can anything we say on this board help to get these changes made?
  4. i'm not going to blame basketball for any of this because i think that's silly, but in my opinion, basketball is lame. here's how every basketball game i've ever watched goes: score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! score! how bout some defense for crying out loud. boring sport (except the last minute and a half of some games)
  5. wow! #8 in the world. please point me to your source. i'd love to show that off.
  6. cavalry wouldn't pass? is cavalry now a native american word? militaries across the world have had cavalries for over 2500 years and the word comes from the french. if cavalry wouldn't pass, then does that mean infantry wouldn't either?
  7. hey, one good thing came of this so far: i haven't seen mplsbison on here all day. let's hope the nickname drop has caused him to leave for good, that would be the silver lining at least.
  8. i'd say you answered your own question: in other words: wait for the vote or the november deadline, whichever comes first
  9. i've been a proponent of this idea for some time. somebody i work with today suggested the aviators or the flyers. that's appropriate for und and flyers is already a well respected professional franchise.
  10. ha. probably not. this whole thing was a joke. let me sum it up: und must drop it's nickname and logo because it's offensive toward a group of people who have showed overwhelming support for the nickname and logo and who even threatened to sue the university if they tried to drop the nickname and logo. somebody please point out the logic in that to me.
  11. and whomever is forcing star2city to read this message board should be ashamed of himself/herself. star2city doesn't want to read about new nickname ideas right now so stop making him/her read this message board; it's just plain cruel. i hope whomever was making you read this will stop now, star2city, so you can grieve.
  12. okay summit league, come get us. every nickname opponent on this board for the past two years has been saying that und will get into the summit league as soon as we drop the nickname. well, nickname has been dropped so let's get the show on the road. if school starts next fall and und is still not in the summit league when we had until november to resolve the the nickname issue, the sl tribe already approved the name, and sr looks like they would have easily had time to approve the name by november, then this whole thing was a huge failure on the part of und, the sbohe, and the nd supreme court. the summit league was the whole reason this issue was rushed. had the summit league not said that they won't consider und for membership until the nickname issue was resolved, there's no way that any entity involved would have seen any reason to make a decision on the matter before the november deadline. so, summit league, where do we sign?
  13. i didn't understand why he got on you about your other post; seemed like a fair post to me. i think it's funny that he called you a troll when you're probably one of only a few people who ever post on here who was actually an athlete at und.
  14. and herein lies the problem. too many bison viewing the game as a favor to und rather than an opportunity to revive one of the best football rivalries outside of fbs football. call me naive, but i'm confident und football would thrive for decades to come without this game, but c'mon, this game was awesome when it existed and it would be awesome again.
  15. if we wanted to go with an animal, here are some animals that are native to north dakota:
  16. let it go, man. i wasn't formulating a conspiracy theory i intend to spread around the internet. i was just thinking out loud. no need to drag my words through the dirt.
  17. i didn't say the summit league had football. in fact, i specifically said: "everybody involved will have to find a way to get und into the same football conference as ndsu. one catalyst to that goal is to get other und sports in the same conference as ndsu (ie. the summit league)" "other sports" being the important part of that last sentence. i also said "just a theory". ugh. your type, the kind who choose to completely twist others posts so they can throw out something like "wrong" or "epic fail", are the worst.
  18. i think he was just saying that the organization is targeting the wrong people in their quest to pass blame from themselves.
  19. yeah, that was lame. i usually watch the gophers' games when und has a bye week, but this year they were only on tape delay during the sioux bye week. what a joke. this is supposed to be the state of hockey and you can't even watch the largest university in the state's hockey games live?! thank God fssn will show all sioux home hockey games whether they're 20-0 or 0-20. i suppose that says something about the two fanbases though.
  20. me too. not only because i didn't want to see my beloved blais coaching my team's biggest rival, but because blais coaching at uno gives me another college hockey team to root for, which means more college hockey games that i have a pony in. let's see, that gives me und, msu, uw, bsu, uno, notre dame, and uaa. plus a few others depending on the scenario. that's a lot of teams to follow, which makes college hockey season just that much more fun.
  21. blais is a gophers alum, but that didn't stop him from coaching at und or signing an extension with uno after having his water tested by umn. i realize it's not the same scenario since motzko is already at st cloud, but my point is: coaches want to coach where they'll get the most exposure/money/success. motzko might feel umn is a better candidate in those regards compared to st cloud. then again, maybe he just really wants to see his alma mater win a national championship and believes he's the man to deliver on that.
  22. you bring up a great point. i never thought of it before, but is it possible that faison shot down taylor's offer of an every other year und/ndsu football game because he feels that scenario reduces the need to get rid of the logo/nickname quickly? i don't think the logic is sound, but i could see faison thinking along the line of: "if i shoot down this every other year option, then everybody involved will have to find a way to get und into the same football conference as ndsu. one catalyst to that goal is to get other und sports in the same conference as ndsu (ie. the summit league). the quickest way into the summit league (in faison's mind) is by getting rid of the sioux nickname/logo. therefore, i'll shoot this every other year option down because that furthers my cause, which is getting rid of the sioux nickname/logo". just a theory, but it's not far-fetched by any means and it would at least offer some explanation as to why faison shot down the every other year und/ndsu football game option because no other good explanation has been offered yet.
  23. didn't the summit already say they weren't going to consider a und application for membership this year?
  24. God no. hakstoal is the man. he just needs a little luck in the post-season, just like every team that wins the title.
  25. 9-7 ncaa tournament record under hakstol. that's obviously not what we, as fans, want, but it's it's a good start to a career. the competition in the regular season varies from week to week whereas the ncaa tournament tends to be the best teams in the country. i'd say a 9-7 ncaa tournamnet record is on par with our regular season performance in that time given the heightened level of talented opponents in the tournament vs regular season.
