Yep, you know how they are...the top five sports upsets of all-time (as written by Gopher fans): #5) Jets/Colts Super Bowl III #4) Pistons/Lakers 2004 NBA Finals #3) North Carolina State over Phi Slamma Jamma 1983 #2) 1980 USA Olympic hockey team over Soviet Union And the #1 greatest upset or gimme-game of all time is... ...Ferris State over North Dakota 2003 NCAA hockey tournament first round? Cmon, WPoS, you can do better than that!
-
That Ferris State game was certainly a disappointing loss for UND, but it can't compare with the great Gopher choke up at UMD several years ago. I believe that was a 5 goal third period lead, right, WPoS?
-
Was that the Niagara/UNH game you are referring to, WPoS? I think that wound up 4-1 Niagara. All the UNH fans were sure they were gonna beat the Sioux and head to the Frozen Four. DOH!
-
This could go one of two ways in my book: Close game because BC is coasting or blow-out city. Niagara defeated a pretty good UNH team back in 2000. A few years ago, Mercyhurst gave Michigan all it could handle at Yost in a 4-3 loss. Even Holy Cross gave the Sioux fits last year. However, I think that's more along the lines of teams not giving those teams respect. BC won't make that mistake. 7-1 BC.

You know, you never know when and where Sioux fans will come out. Back in 2000, three-four friends of mine and I took the day off of work (all Sioux alums) and we met at Joe Senser's in Roseville for the 2:00 pm semi-final vs Maine. The bar was pretty quiet and in walks an older gentleman. He comes over to our table, introduces himself as a UND alum and big hockey fan and proceeds to turn to go sit at another table since we were all quite young by comparison and he didn't want to impose on our group. Nonsense, we said, and we all invited him to join us and he finally did. We had a great time sharing stories about the games we saw in college, on the road, and just having a great old time. The game ended and he asked us all for our e-mail and home addresses. The Sioux went on to win the NCAA title two days later and about a week after that, I came home to a package containing a Sioux poster, pennant, and an official game puck. I called one of the fans who saw that Maine game with me gloating about my luck and she said "don't be too cocky....I got the same thing." I won't write the person's name, but it again goes to show you the class, tradition, and pride that comes with being a Sioux hockey fan, school alumnus, or player. Thank you to the 2004-2005 players for carrying that torch. Regardless of what happens on the ice tonite, I know that through all of the disappointments, player injuries, and now a severe injury to a player this season, you left your hearts on the ice last weekend in St Paul and you will no doubt do that again tonite in Massachusetts. It's been a great run and 8th title this year or no 8th title, this team has proudly carried on that tradition.

What a fabulous quote by Andy Schneider and great follow-up by PCM. I'm glad my favorite sports team isn't the Timberwolves or anyone else where some multi-million dollar athlete whines about an organization not appreciating him and demands to be traded. Andy understands the pride and honor that 70 years of tradition brings...and I'm honored to be a fan of that tradition. I'll be wearing my Sioux jersey cheering tonite at Joe Senser's in Bloomington. And tomorrow, I'll be wearing my Sioux jersey and Maine hat at Mariucci booing the Gophers. Go Sioux!
-
What time are people getting to Senser's? If I didn't have a seminar tomorrow, I'd be there half the day watching the early games.
-
Notice the Colorado College hat, though, teamsioux? I lost a bet on last year's title game to the guy on my left. Next year, he gets to wear my Sioux jersey for the first game UND plays in the Final Five. Let's hope it's the 7:00 pm semi-final vs Minnesota.
-
I'm in the middle...lost last year's title game bet to the guy wearing the blue Sweden jersey and was forced to wear that monstrosity to the CC/MN game. Note the CC hat though. MafiaMan

I now see the difference between being an 01grad and being a "92grad"! Whatever happened to the guy who used to cowboy party and toga back in the day?
-
siouxcaddy, I forgot all about the payback theory from the 2002 title game. You're right, that would be sweet. PCM, hold the phone and don't dial 9-1-1 yet to report that jumper on the High Bridge...I think I'm stickin' around until at least Saturday afternoon.
-
Ever been cow-tippin'?
-
Hey siouxguy...gimme the 4-1-1. I don't think I want to splurge on two tickets, but I'd hang out with ya for the weekend. E-mail me at siouxfan19@yahoo.com. I even purchased a Maine hat yesterday just in case!
-
WPoS, I'm not sure what you mean about how the Gophers could have hosed themselves out of playing at Mariucci. Regardless of whether they had been a #1 or a #4 seed, by NCAA rules, since they are hosting a region, by qualifying for the tournament, whether as the #1 team in the country or #16 just happy to get in, they MUST be placed in their home arena.

Leave the comedy to the professionals, Reformed.

Smoking, bad. Brilliant color commentary? Sure. If you can handle my witty one-liners. Keychain? I've still got a dozen of them burning a hole in my pocket.
-
Save me two seats, Reformed! LET'S GO SIOUX!

By the way...I need to figure out how to get a new updated pic on here for all you Gopher fans. My buddies and I take a Final Five pic every year...and since I lost a bet last year on the Sioux/Gopher game, I had to wear my friend's Golden Goophy jersey on Friday night. Ugh... The pic, however, is a classic. The fans in our section that we've seen for 5 years now were dying laughing as they all know I am a Sioux fan. The ones who didn't know me looked at me like "what the hell?" when I stood up and went nuts when the CC Tigers took the ice!
-
Good idea, squirtcoach. I, MafiaMan, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bequeath my hockey jersey collection to PCM, WPoS, and 01grad.
-
LOL...yea, no doubt. Apparently the Gopher equipment manager called the X Lost and Found Department...Harrington's jock is still missing.
-
Don't even say the word Harrington to me right now. I'm still not amused with his spear on Stafford with 26 seconds left.
-
Turk, That's funny stuff. Maybe if the announcers had shouted "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL," your new-found friends south of the border may have taken a liking to the game.
-
Sagard, please tell me that isn't a reference to the first goal of the CC game being waived off? If so, find someone who TiVo'd the game and check the replay. I'll tell you one way to not overcome a goal being waived off: Not giving up a goal of your own 40 seconds later!
-
I really didn't think UND had a shot three weeks ago and I still think they're a long-shot, but you're correct, Turk, who knows? It has been a strange season. All I know is that in three weeks when the season ends, I'm probably going to jump off of the Robert Street Bridge knowing that's the last hockey we'll be seeing until next October.
