Too early to give up on next year's team. Let's wait and see how the team looks when classes start in August.

I'm certainly not giving up on them, by any stretch.
Just lowering my expectations a little.

With Blake & Berg and our current portal additions, I would peg this team as top 5 pre-season.
With both Blake & Berg gone, they won't be a top-5 team in my opinion.  Of course, that can change if they progress during the season.
Less talented teams than that have won the title in the last decade.  ;)

Blake seemed like he was a one-man-band because oftentimes he had to be.

    Yep.
Unfortunately puts a big dampener on our offensive chances for next season with Gaber and potentially Blake/Berg gone as well.  That's our top 3 goal scorers from this past season.  Highest returning goal scorer would be OMac then with 13 goals.

I know that some returning guys will step up with increased ice time and special teams play and that we have a very good recruiting class and portal pickups coming in...but that's a lot of talent and points to replace.  I feel less optimistic about next year's team since the Blake/Berg news has been floated around.  Of course, maybe they could put it together at the end...that's my hope.

But that tying goal at the beginning of the 3rd could have been very avoidable if Ludvig either covers it or pushes at a different angle.

I just can't believe that he didn't just cover it.  With how slow it was going and with all that traffic right in front of him?
Just cover it for the faceoff.  Every time.

Maybe Carolina didn’t like the way Blake was developing. Wanted to get him within the program to get him on track

    Ha!  I LOL'd at this.  :D
You think they're not liking his development into a NCHC player of the year and Hobey Hat-Trick finalist?  :) ;)

Maybe Strathman can talk Whitelaw into transferring to UND as well.

Whitelaw would be a nice pickup.  I remember him standing out with his forecheck when we played UW in the early season.  He was a little sparkplug.
Plus that would have the added benefit of balancing out the forward classes a bit, as he could join Perron in the SO class.

  6. Projection based on current info:

    Forward (15):
    GR - Jamernik
SR - Berg, Kunz, Schmaltz, Wilkie
JR - McLaughlin, James, Strinden, Montgomery
    SO - Perron
FR - Swanson, Boisvert, Croal, Littler
    X - Portal

    Defense (8):
    JR - Zmolek
SO - Livanavage, Wiebe, Komzak, MacDonald
    FR - Jubenvill, Strathmann, Emery

    Goalie (3):
    SR - Semptimphelter
    JR - Johnson
    SO - Hedquist

Wilkie added, huge news with Blake news coming soon.
Makes for a lot of experience up front.  Six players will use up their eligibility next season.  But our D-corps is very talented and young...should be set on the back end for a few seasons now.  :)

  7. Welcome aboard, Carter Wilkie:

    Quote

Wilkie narrowed it down, made recruiting visits to UND and Wisconsin, then gave a verbal commitment to play for the Fighting Hawks in 2024-25.

"It was a crazy couple of days, honestly," Wilkie said. "It was a tough decision, for sure. It was quick to narrow it down, especially when a program like North Dakota calls you. I wanted to go see it. It was a great experience. I'm happy with where I'm going now. I'm hoping my phone dies down a little bit now."

Wilkie, the highest-scoring player to enter the portal this offseason, has one year of eligibility remaining.

  8. Projection based on current info:

    Forward (15):
    GR - Jamernik
SR - Berg, Kunz, Schmaltz, Montgomery
    JR - McLaughlin, James, Strinden
    SO - Perron
FR - Swanson, Boisvert, Croal, Littler
    2X - Portal

    Defense (8):
    JR - Zmolek
SO - Livanavage, Wiebe, Komzak, MacDonald
    FR - Jubenvill, Strathmann, Emery

    Goalie (3):
    SR - Semptimphelter
    JR - Johnson
    SO - Hedquist

Sounds like the Blake news is imminent and potentially already done.
With that news, we're looking like we might need 1-3 forwards to add (depends on if Littler, Klee, or both/neither are ready).  I'd guess that one of those two will come this fall and we'd grab two out of the portal.  Hopefully Wilkie or another faceoff specialist can be added, which would allow Berry to put OMac on the wing.

Losing Blake will be tough, as it seemed like so much of the offense went thru him at times this year.  He'll need to clean up his giveaways/turnovers and add some strength to succeed at the next level.

I expect big jumps from a few forwards...guys like James, OMac, and Perron have the skill...another year will be huge.  Steady progression from guys like Jammer, Berg, Kunz, and Strinden as well.

According to RA from Spittin Chiclets on Twitter the deal with Carolina is done and there will be a formal announcement tomorrow regarding Blake. That sucks.

Best of luck to him moving forward.  Wish we could have gotten another year out of him, and honestly think he could have certainly used it, but understand why Carolina was pushing so hard to get him into their system.

Agreed. Pull the dang ripcord so we can say congrats, thank you, and reconcile/move on or say you’re coming back now. That works too. :)

I'd prefer the latter, but doubt there's much of a chance of that happening at this point.

Anyone want to try to spin this as not a big deal?

Not spinning, as I’m guessing the staff would have wanted both.
But they've shown to do well getting good players out of the portal when needed, so I trust they have a plan to fill any holes should any further pro or portal departures happen.

I wish I could agree with you but I’ll argue that if Pitlick stays, the gophers might have one of the deepest forward groups in the country, if not the deepest.

Depending on who leaves Mich & MSU, I don’t even think they’ll have the deepest forward depth in their conference, let alone the country. We’ll see I guess.

  13. The Wood loss hurts a bit, will hurt even more once Blake signs.
Some UMN fans are already proclaiming the Wood/Moore/Snuggerud line to be as good as the Knies/Cooley/Snuggerud line, which is laughable. UMN still won’t have very good forward depth next season, even with the Wood pickup.

Update: Shattuck won in OT 5-4. Zellers had the game winner - his 4th goal of the game.

Really interested to see how he does next season when he moves up a level.
The kid dominated this year...can't wait to see him at UND if he can keep up with this level of progress!
