I was reading Brad's article about the Central Scouting rankings, and the potential for a few of UND's future recruits to be drafted this year. Has anyone studied the issue to figure out whether college programs are being hurt in those situations? It's sort of like the Blake situation. He was drafted, then played a year of juniors, which meant that after his junior year of college he could become a free agent.
That sucked, because normally you only expect first rounders, or maybe second rounders to bail after two years. But I'm sure Carolina made the push because they didn't want to give Blake leverage.
Seems like the coaches might want to think about bringing these guys in the fall after they are drafted to maybe insure ourselves of at least three seasons.
Zellers immediately comes to mind with that. I'm sure could use a year in juniors, as the jump from (essentially) HS to college is quite big...but then he'd be in the same situation as Blake and being pressured to sign after his SO season here at UND.

If UND is not playing in the Fargo regional championship in March 2025, then it’s time for a change.
I’d be on board with this.
UND returns a strong team. They should be able to contend for a 2 seed or higher. And then they get a “home” regional game(s) as a reward. If they can’t take advantage of that next year…again…it might be time for the AD to make the tough call.- 1

I certainly know a number of coaches at the NHL level change lines often, while there are many others that believe you need to keep lines together for quite a while and only change them if things are a complete mess.
I think people put too much emphasis on lines and line chemistry on here. On the forums, we have people blasting Berry for both changing the lines too often AND not changing the lines often enough.
In the actual games, how often are the actual lines (from the line chart) playing together anyway? They constantly get shuffled due to penalties, injuries, shortening the bench, and with players flipping due to special teams.
In all honesty, these players practice and play with each other enough that they can “make it work” with most any combination of players out there.- 2

That’s a nice get
Good get for sure. Was wondering when he’d get picked out.
Michigan lost a lot already this off-season. Looking like a MSU/UMN race for their conf title at this point. -

Nice that didn’t take long.
If one more signs today, we’d have ourselves a Meatloaf song. -
Depends on what type of cake.

Hopefully his younger and more talented brother Zeev gets picked high in the NHL draft by a defenseman hungry NHL team and leaves as well!
Get Behrens, Rizzo, and Devine to sign as well. Maybe even Carle to leave for the NHL.

Wasn’t Broz a transfer from Minnesota?
Yes. They must have meant new incoming transfers this season. Since this year was his 2nd year at DU...he was only at UMN for his FR season.

What round was G Johnson drafted? It was Philly, I think.
Flyers, correct.
Round 2, #33 overall. -

Are we pursuing any more portal players ?
I wouldn't be surprised with another forward portal player unless we plan on bringing in both Klee & Littler.

Article on Mac Swanson. Can't wait to see what he can do at UND!
Quote"(The fans) say 'when are you going to UND? I can't wait to watch you play in Grand Forks.' It's really cool," Swanson said. "Around town you see North Dakota sweatshirts all the time and hats and stuff like that, so it's especially cool just to be so close to Grand Forks."
QuoteHe says his size has been a topic of conversation, leading up to June's NHL draft, but teams are still interested.
"I've heard really good things, but we'll see what happens in the next couple months if talks pick up or not," Swanson said.
I wonder if a team will pick him in the later rounds of the draft.

That'd be a dang big portal grab for Miami if he ended up there.
I would be much less surprised to see him end up at ASU. -

Makes you wonder?
I get some of the reasoning with Blake being drafted in 2021 and both Snuggerud and McGroarty in 2022...and with Carolina needing to replenish their entire feeder system with them getting an AHL team again this upcoming year...just one of those things that you'd normally pencil in a 4th rounder to stick around for at least 3 seasons in a normal situation. Of course, Blake had a pretty damn good year too.

That would be big for Michigan.
Sucks that Michigan and Minnesota both get a first-rounder to return for their junior seasons, but our star 4th-rounder leaves after his Soph year.- 9

Jeremy Wilmer in the portal…that’s interesting. Good production, I guess he was scratched for the FF game.
That'd be a nice pickup for someone, he dishes it well.

Berry could leave tomorrow for the NHL and many of us would be elated.
At the very least, we wouldn't have to go round in circles with this conversation for the rest of the summer.

If all that matters is national titles...all those teams have had the same success as UND in that timespan.

College hockey season done.
Countdown to next season has begun.McLaughlin - Berg - James
Swanson - Wilkie - Perron
Boisvert - Jamernik - Strinden
Kunz - Schmaltz - Croal
Extra: Montgomery, Littler, KleeLivanavage - Zmolek
Emery - Wiebe
Strathmann - MacDonald
Extra: Komzak, JubenvillSempt / Hedquist
Extra: JohnsonWe'll be strong up the middle. The top 6 will be very good, and still allow you to put skilled players like Strinden & Kunz (two guys I'd expect to see even more progress out of) on the 3rd/4th lines. Swanson & Boisvert might start on the lower lines, but I could see those two move up the lineup pretty quick once they get used to the speed of college puck. That 2nd line would be fun to watch with the skill of Perron & Swanson, but they're both on the smaller side, so pairing them with a bigger 2-way player like Wilkie could help.

I don't live anywhere near GF, so I don't know the kinds of questions the local media asks Berry after a loss. Do Schlossman or Hennessy ask him tough questions & does Berry ever admit that it's his fault when they lose a game? Or is it a big circle jerk?
One question I would very much want asked of Berry: "What are you going to do differently next year to get the team ready for the playoffs & avoid another early exit?" Seems simple enough & Berry's answer would be very telling about where his mindset is at.
Looking at Herald articles and watching post-game interviews, for the most part it's pretty typical questions of any college or pro athletic teams by local media.
As far as admitting fault, how often is a game loss entirely the fault of the coaching staff...or the players...or the game plan?
Similarly, after a win, how much of the credit should go to the coaching staff...or the players...or the game plan?
The vast majority of the time, it is a combo of all those factors and others that contribute to any win or loss. And heck, maybe even some good old-fashioned puck luck <gasp!>.As far as having your question asked of Berry...if the media won't ask, and you really want to know...you can always ask Berry yourself. His email address is publicly posted on the official Fighting Hawks website along with all the coaching staff. From personal experience, the coaching staff is usually pretty willing to discuss hockey, even with commoners such as us.

That's a really tough comparison to make.
Rube had a 149–186–11 record in his 10 seasons coaching at UND (.447) and didn't win a single championship of any kind.
Meanwhile, Berry has a 206–104–33 record in 9 seasons (.649) and has won 7 championships (5 Penna's, 1 NCHC tourney, 1 natty).
A more accurate comparison might be Bob May or Barry Thorndycraft...they each won one national title as well...but May only coached 2 seasons while Thorndycraft coached 5 seasons.
