Knowlegis did congressional power rankings based on power and ability to be effective in 2005. Pomeroy ranked 332 out of 437. Of the 53 house members first elected in 1992 and still in office, Pomeroy ranked 46. Of the 205 Democrats, Earl ranked 105. He only got points for "position", nothing for "influence" or "legislation". But even for position, he ranked 312 out of 437. I don't know if these rankings have any validity or not, but they're interesting.

Keep in mind that a 28-person suite does not have 28 seats, it will have 18-20 regular seats and 8-10 bar stools. Because of that, it is tough to add extra people to the suite and give them a good view of the ice. I wouldn't add more than 5-7 people unless some of those people have no interest in watching the game. While you can't bring your own food and drinks, you can bring food purchased from concession stands up to the suite level. To use your credit up I wouldn't bother with the standard fare that catering offers, it is pretty pricey; I would focus instead on the offerings from Subway and Dominos, which are a better value. Also, the suite level concourse has a couple of cash bars, where you can get all sorts of mixed drinks. Therefore, you can use your credit on beer. For your $500, you can get (based on 2005-06 prices): 5 cases domestic beer or flavored beer 3 Subway sandwich platters (45 4" subs) or a 6' party sub 2 Dominos specialty pizzas 2 Dominos one topping pizzas 1 pound of potato chips

Forecast for Saturday morning is low to mid 50s with light rain and light easterly winds. Subject to change, of course. I'm up for a beer, Friday nite or post race.

I'm running the half as well. I ran the full last year and was very impressed with how well organized it was.

I don't see how this changes anything in the short term, unless it prompts the NCAA to delay its decision on UND's appeal. It is a positive step towards obtaining the written support of the Tribal Council though. Good news.

Herald reports this morning that both Woosters are leaving. Woosters to leave UND

I believe it was stated on another thread that he is not draft eligible. Too old.

In their March report, ISS had Forney at #13, same as in February. He wasn't in their top 15 before that. I haven't seen anything more current than that. link Obviously, ISS thinks much more highly of him than CSS, but I don't see how you can say his stock is dropping because of that.

That is funny. "We have so much respect for Coach Rivard that we choose to remain anonymous when we trash her abilities in the student newspaper". I don't like this however, I don't know the situation. Maybe this was necessary.

Favorite Player(s) or moment in Sioux Hockey
lawkota replied to SIOUXELEVENS's topic in Men's Hockey
I became a Sioux hockey fan in 1976-77 (12 yo at the time), although I had been to games before that. My favorite player that year was Dave Colborne. He was my favorite because I remember going to a game and a bunch of students in the top row of the student section had taken their shirts off and had C-O-L-B-O-R-N-E spelled on their chests. I figured any player than could garner that was worthy of praise. The Sioux started strong that year and there was quite a bit of buzz about them, especially since they had been so dismal before that. They started out 10-2 and in first place in the WCHA. Rube* had recruited a strong bunch of forwards that year: Rick Zaparniuk, Erwin Martens, Mark Taylor, and Colborne; along with defenseman Brad Cox. I think that Zaparniuk was centering Taylor and Colborne on an all-freshman line and they were tearing things up. I remember Virg(?) writing a column on what name the line should have - I think he settled on the "Zap" line. Then Colborne was ruled ineligible or something; anyway, he left the team. The Sioux fell apart. I was so disappointed, heart-broken really. I remember going to games late in the year with the hope the team to recapture the spark they had at the start and being anxious for next year as soon as the season ended. So, despite a 19-19 record and no postseason, 1976-77 remains my favorite moment in Sioux hockey. I know I became Sioux hockey fan that year. And of course, there was a silver lining. The next year, Rube* added Doug Smail (my favorite Sioux of all time), Dave Christian, Marc Chorney, Mike Stone and Paul Chadwick. Then in 78-79, Gino took that base, added a monster recruiting class (Kevin Maxwell, Phil Sykes, Cary Eades, Howard Walker and Bob Iwabuchi), and developed a league champ and college hockey powerhouse. *As assistant, Gino probably was responsible for all these recruits, although I have no idea if that is true. -
Couldn't find it by itself but here you go. Interesting that the interlocking ND must be used with another UND trademark, would this have something to do with its similarity to Notre Dame's logo?

Excellent post! I wonder if the term "racist" has the same power it had 5, 10, 20 years ago? As you stated, it is so commonplace to use that term that it seems to be losing its sting. At least it is for me. We someone cries racism, my first reaction is one of skepticism and a little distrust of the accuser. The word used to have power - sent a red flag up immediately; Now?......hmmmphh, "someone's whining.". How often are true cases of injustice not taken seriously at first glance because of it?

PCM, I don't see where we disagree. As YaneA posted, FSU's appeal was sent before an appeal process had been formalized. I certainly don't blame FSU that the NCAA acted on it, or think that FSU acted unethically or inappropriately and didn't mean to imply so, but neither do I think it deserves praise. All I meant to imply was the NCAA was hell bent on getting FSU out of the way, even if it meant relaxing the rules, and I question whether any of the other schools would have been treated similarly. And I also wonder if perhaps FSU would have been better served, in the long run, to fight the appropriateness of the policy, rather than seek a exemption from it. On a side note, Interesting that in the NCAA's August 19 Press Release, tribal approval is a primary factor, despite that fact that the August 5 Release implies that use of names and images is never appropriate. ka-ching and cha-ching

Tough crowd. First of all, I highly doubt that FSU went through the formal appeals process as outlined by the NCAA and if it did, it certainly got special treatment. The process was only formalized last Friday. Then, magically, on Tuesday, not only had FSU got its appeal in, but it had been heard by the staff committee and executive committee and then granted. Coincidently, on Tuesday night, Kupchella stated at a FSC gathering that he had not received information from the NCAA regarding the appeals process. FSU went after the NCAA with all guns blazing. It used all its power as the gorilla of the bunch to get what was best for it, then vanish. Very effective and if UND was in the same situation, I'm sure I would want them to do the same. But it's hardly admirable behavior, and I think that's the point that redwing was trying to make. But I wonder if FSU's quick attack won't come back to bite them in the @ss. It was granted an exemption simply because of the support of the tribe (which, according to the NCAA release last Friday, is the primary consideration). If the NCAA policy sticks, FSU is effectively at the mercy of a tribal resolution. Can you spell KA-CHING?

Not only that, but the current wet cycle is a lot longer than most people think. Devils Lake has been steadily rising since 1940. Close is a relative term. The natural outlet (through the Tolna coulee) is at an elevation of 1459 feet. Stump Lake is at about 1428 now and rising - fast. It's up 2 feet in the last 30 days and about 4 feet since snow melt. It could equalize with Devils Lake late next year at 1448. Nevertheless, Stump would still have 11 feet to go to reach the natural outlet and that means Devils Lake would have to rise the same amount. That is a tremendous amount of water. More water, in fact, then has taken to raise the lake the 24 feet since 1993. When Devils Lake started rising dramatically, it was at an elevation of about 1424, it covered 48,000 acres and contained 650,000 acre-feet of water. Now, at 1448, Devils Lake covers 131,000 acres and contains 2,550,000 acre-feet of water. At an elevation of 1459, Devils Lake would cover 260,000 acres and contain 4,600,000 acre feet of water. Thats almost 2,000,000 more acre-feet of water, plus an additional 200,000 acre-feet to raise Stump to the same level. Not saying it won't happen, but it helps to understand the magnitude of what needs to transpire.

I have the Sioux finishing 5th, right where they were this year. My predicted order of finish: 1. Colorado College - I just can't see this senior dominated team not winning the conference. Yeah, McElhinney is a big loss, but Zaba isn't too shaby. 2. Minnesota - more talent than any two teams in the nation, or so I've read about a thousand times. However, it will be interesting to see how other teams in the league play the Gophers next year, now that the word is out that they don't like physical play. 3. Wisconsin - they have to be improved, right? I mean, they lose only 1 player (albeit one of the best goalies in the league). 4. Denver - the Pioneers have bigger losses than the stat sheet shows but much like the last two years, they will weather a early season slump and will find themselves in the thick of a national championship chase. 5. North Dakota - a very young squad will experience some growing pains, especially on defense, but has the potential to come together in the same way they did this year. If Matt Greene returns, they could challenge for a top 3 finish otherwise, look for no better than 5th, but no worse either. 6. Minnesota Duluth - The Bulldogs graduation losses mirror those of the Sioux, in terms of numbers and importance to the team. The difference is that UND was a notch above UMD this year and has a much better incoming class. They are here because they have more offense than Anchorage and I expect Reichmuth to have a better Senior season. 7. Alaska Anchorage - This team was worse than their record last year and stole wins they had no business getting. There will be improvement on the ice, but not in the standings as the Seawolves are a year away from challenging for home ice. 8. Minnesota State Mankato - Should be able to score but the league's worst defense is not likely to improve with Volp gone. 9. St. Cloud State - maybe the freshmen will show more promise as sophs, something last year's freshmen didn't do. A better than average returning defensive core and goaltending keeps the Huskies out of the basement. 10. Michigan Tech - as much as I'd like to put Tech in front of St. Cloud, I can't. They lose one of the league's top playmakers in Murphy and a solid goalie in Ellsworth. Even if the younger forwards step up, they still are going to give up alot of goals next year.

Happens to everyone. It was a great idea. I would have loved to take in a game at either of those ballparks.

I think the attendance counts are accurate. I didn't count but 700 and 1,100 seem right. Tarleton had a good group of fans and brought a pep band as well. Findlay brought a large contingent of fans so I was disappointed to see them lose. Some pretty good games.

These numbers make no sense. I went back and the 2002 tourney (where Metro beat Kentucky Wesleyan in Evansville) drew 13,700 for the 4 sessions. I think the Herald numbers are referring to the entire championship, including the regionals. Even without a local team, I would think that 3,000 a session is an attainable goal for the tourney.

Looks to be official - Thomas is new NCC Commish. Herald Link

I see nothing but the truth in that article. Team Canada toyed with Slovakia on Saturday and steamrolled Sweden yesterday. The other teams in Group B have showed nothing. Canada will walk into the medal round. Whether they get a test there remains to be seen. Russia has the forwards but are they disciplined enough in their own zone? The US doesn't have near the depth that Canada does and it looks unlikely at this point whether Montoya can carry the team. Canada has weaknesses - goaltending is a unknown and they can't seem to stay out of the penalty box - but 4 days in - I would say the gold is Canada's to lose. Of course, they've been in that position before. I really enjoyed seeing the Canadian fans get into yesterday's game. REA was really jumping. However, I could have done without hearing 100+ red & white fans chant "USA sucks" in the concourse afterwards. We are constantly being scolded by our friends up north about our supposed "classless" behavior and jingoism. Look in the mirror.
-
REA officials are expecting attendance of 250,000.....for 31 games. Some other attendance figures for world junior tournaments 1999 - Winnipeg - 173,453 2002 - Czech Republic - 111,128 2003 - Halifax - 242,173 2004 - Helskinki - 116,556 (3,760 avg)

Why can't student-athlete eligibility requirements be uniform across all NCAA divisions?
