  1. They won't be missed. Didn't want to work, just wanted the glory of wearing the jersey and posing in the team picture. We all know when this team played anyone out of their conference they didn't have enough talent to win. Going to the Big Sky, we need to upgrade the talent and a coach needs scholarships to get that done.
  2. Plain and simple by a guy who has not spoken on the nickname issue on this site. If we end up "using" this nickname any longer than than this school year, the following will happen down the road: 1) We will be dismissed from the Big Sky conference in all sports. 2) We will be removed from from our new hockey conference before play ever begins. 3) You will see just how many schools refuse to play us any longer. This list will include all the state schools in Minnesota, The Univ. of Wisconsin, The Univ. of Iowa, and probably several others, especially in college hockey, who have yet to speak on the subject. 4) There will be a mass exodus of coaches and athletes from our university because they will no longer be allowed to compete for championships, at home or on the road, simply because of a nickname and logo. 5) We will be relegated to a Unversity with no one to play and then the debate can be about why are we playing at all? This is not about the fans/supporters of the nickname. It is about what's best for the athlete's and the University. I wish everyone could understand who is really getting hurt here.
  3. After watching this group play, I'm not sure I'd hang my hat as the next head coach on being a great recruiter. This team isn't very good so recruiting, in my opinion, is a big issue.
  4. Faison wants his own guy in there? Just like Gene got his own in at NDSU? Hows that working out for NDSU Womens bball? Worry about your own coaches, fans, and athletes my friend. We don't need your opinion on a man who did more for UND athletics in 20+ years that just about anyone in the history of the school.
  5. I believe Coach Jones has hitched his Big Sky star to Webb, Huff, and Anderson. The first 2 years of conference play will be interesting. As a person who "coached" for many years I understand how easy it is to get guards but with 12 full scholarships and a roster that has kids from all over North America, there is no reason to say that posts are "hard to get." It has to be a priority in recruiting every year. They watch enough AAU ball all summer to know they're out there.
  6. I didn't mean for it to be contradictory, when I said it would be nice to be able to throw the ball into the post and shoot 6-8 footers every now and then, I meant that right now, we can't; we truly need some post play. In trying to keep my post short, I could have omitted some key vocabulary, sorry. That being said, these guards don't shoot very well either. I am also not a fan of all the ball screen stuff. It is my belief that to run the ball screen action, you need your screen guys (for us it is our 4's and 5's) to be able to shoot the ball on the perimeter. There is a lot of switching and doubling off the screen action that creates open shots for the person who set the screen. Our 4's and 5's can't shoot 8 footers let alone 17-20 foot shots. To me, the offense only works for us against teams that are less athletic than we are; not many of them around.
  7. When you watch us run that horrible screen/roll offense against a team that would switch their 4's and 5's onto our 1's and 2's, you saw how far we are away from being a legit DI bball team. Now, I realize we'll NEVER be a team that beats the best in the Big 12 but the difference is athleticism was mind boggling. We could not get the dribble inside the 3-point line. Our posts are not very good. I know Robinson is an All-American and a lottery pick but it would be nice if every once in a while we could throw the ball into the block and make a 6 or 8 foot shot. Our guards shoot way to much.
  8. No way Buck leaves now; he wants to coach this team in the Big Sky. The last 5 years of crappy scheduling and traveling across country, he ain't quitting now!!! Coach Dags knows Buck as well as anyone on this board and if says Buck is staying, I trust him.
  9. What the hell does that have to do with anything being discussed here? Did he not recruit your daughter or something? Buck has done alot of keep the name at UND and he worked very hard with the Spirit Lake tribe to make sure they realize the honor of the name. My guess today, knowing him like I think I do, he wants the name issue resolved. If that means putting it to rest, so be it. Losing the Iowa game was a big deal for everyone except the people blinded by this name thing. Time for all to wake up. Al Carlson, do you hear me!!!!! By the way, you spelled defense wrong, dope!!!
  10. The Tuesday night show hurt attendance, no doubt. The show however, was as good as any we've had in town in a long time. Great concert!!!
  11. Is that you Lakes? Your mouth finally caught up with you? Bet the staff at FOX is proud
  12. Trupp was a fun watch from the first time he laced them up for UND. Frattin made a statement about life in the way he turned himself around.
  13. Don't believe there is any way Blais goes to Tech. The people at UNO are committed to hockey, hell they just dropped football and wrestling to make hockey their deal. He'll get paid to stay in Omaha.
  14. RIP in Mandi. Sorry to the Schwartz family for their loss. Sports and Nicknames seem trivial today. Bless the family.
  15. He was a great basketball coach. He knew his strengths, didn't pretend to be someone he wasn't and everyone knew who was in charge. Always felt like his leaving should have been handled better. See him every now and then in church. He looks good.
  16. You're making this claim assuming the law is actually constitutional. I'm not sure that's an argument I'm ready to go with. The ND Supreme Court might not see it the same way.
  17. Totally agree with this.On one hand, the fact that he's coming to ND to discuss this in our yard could be a very positive step for the name. A new President and possibly a new philosophy. On the other hand, he could come in and say," look, a deal is a deal. You didn't get both tribes to approve the name before the deadline, we have a signed contract by the NCAA and the parties of the state, we're done. Change the name or face other sanctions." I'm optimistic enough to think that he wouldn't come to ND to punish us so maybe there is a negotiation he's got planned for us. I will say that I'm very happy the NCAA is coming to ND. It shows that they see how important this issue is to the people of ND.
  18. This from a guy whose team played Morgan St. last fall and this year they play Lafayette and St. Francis!!! I must have missed the playoff games they were in last year.
  19. Do you believe there are 13 on bball scholarships or scholarships in general? I can't imagine they'd use all 13 during the transition period,
  20. Its also really not that necessary to pull scholarships. A the DI level you have 12 fulls in men's bball. You are either a walk-on or a scholarship athlete. If you get academic aid, it counts against the athletic aid. The reason I say scholarships don't need to be pulled is because most coaches never use all 12. They work with 9 or 10 as much as they can. Most coaches only have a rotation of 7-8 players so you make sure you have 8 that can play and give a couple more academic aid and away you go. Some walk-on with no money attached or they get big pell grant money based on the family income; you're set. If a kid can't play, you tell him straight up and he looks for another school. Very few men's bball players stay enrolled at a school after the coach tells them they can't play. The kid wants to play, thinks the coach is wrong, and finds another school. Just be honest with them and they'll move on on their own.
  21. Signs at Valley City but people (fans) think he could play here? Hmmm.............................we have to set our standards higher as fans and quit looking in state for Big Sky players. The next one in-state that has an "outside" chance at being a DI player is A.J. Jacobson from Fargo Shanley.
  22. How much of the nickname stuff this winter has the people in the athletics dept. rethinking this is the place to be? It's a question that has to be asked.
  23. If you were in a union in ND, that's probably true. Unions in this state have never been granted a lot of leverage when it comes to bargaining so their impact on members lives is probably minimal. The one issue I have with the negativity directed at unions is that they only took the benefits offered to them. When states like Wisconsin negotiated and agreed to pay 95% of each member's family health insurance plan or pay both sides of the retirement plan, what were the union leaders supposed to do, not take it? Negotiations have always been about asking for a lot and then, usually, meeting in the middle. Someone on the negotiating team for the state made the offer and the union leaders took it. They should have. Lets also not forget that the union in Wisconsin agreed to increases on their side for both health insurance and retirement benefits before Gov. Walker decided that wasn't good enough and went after the dismantling of the union. If anyone likes the way the whole process was handled in Wisconsin, you and I have completely different definitions of fairness.
