So when the day comes that Fighting Sioux shirts are not allowed on campus or at UND events would you be stopped at the door if you were wearing this shirt? is there an assumption that if someone wears a Sioux shirt that they are unwilling to "move on"? Just gotta comment on Standing Rock - a majority of the tribal members live in South Dakota and have never been anywhere close to Grand Forks. They have no interest in UND or the logo and thus no interest in having a vote on a name they know nothing about - just another example of how the NCAA screwed UND (Yes our Attorney General agreed to the terms at the time but no other University has had to get approval from two tribes and especially one that is about 500 miles from their campus.) But I agree that's history and time to move on - the "Protectors of other people's feelings" won.

NCAA To Sanction UND if School Does Not Adopt New Nickname
CMSioux replied to Benny Baker's topic in UND Nickname
Not to mention the letter writing campaign that pretty much put UND on a black list for scheduling, the certainty that UND won't be chosen if they have a team that is ever on the bubble for at large play-offs and of course there's that hosting thing - hey one benefit is that UND could actually get Fargo blackballed. -
Sincere best wishes to him. Next man up!

I'm okay with just North Dakota and I am fine with moving on from Fighting Sioux - the lefties won. BUT the reality is the NCAA says "Vi Have Vays to make your life difficult". They may not be able to do anything about it but as we have experienced they can be clandestine in punishing a school that crosses them. -

The case for North Dakota as a standalone name (not a Sioux endorsemen
CMSioux replied to ClassB's topic in UND Nickname
No wonder Mussman couldn't recruit any OLs (sarcasm). I'm still not buying it. Most players and parents aren't going to respect a coach that recruits by being negative about other teams. -
I'm not a trademark lawyer - I don't think they have to "sell" stuff they have to be "using" the logo in a public place - I'm guessing The Ralph doesn't count because it's not owned by UND so printing a few high priced shirts once a year is probably the least visible way to protect it. .

Documented - did I miss something? Has there even been a recruit who came out and said they did not attend UND because of the Fighting Sioux nickname or related issues? Or was it just hearsay from those with an agenda or coaches who were toeing the administrations line? I suppose you could ask current players if they ever considered not attending because of the name issue. Don't you think it comes down to scholarship, facilities, area of study, the recruiting process, distance from home, family legacy - I could list several more things that probably affect recruiting more than a nickname. Now I am ready to move on but I'm won't ever be convinced that the only reason we have to move on it political correctness run amuk. -
Much more likely that the schools that got the pass are going to lose their Native American nicknames - Fighting Sioux as the official nickname for UND is history. Even if the NCAA changed (which won't happen) too many liberals on campus to allow that - heck we can't even get "arrow" or "Nokota" past them.

http://www.inc.com/guides/201101/how-to-protect-your-trademark-from-infringement.html I did the research for you - you have to use it or you lose it. I am quite certain it's not something the leaders at UND feel it is something they "Get To" do.

Here is the link http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/- it was misleading as it came in a discussion about school nicknames but it appears you are correct in that a quick check of a few on the list didn't show any with sports - I wasn't going to go through the entire list. Interesting that "Tribe" was has been brought up and only has one school using it from this list. While it would be a good fit for UND and could easily be used with no Native American references, there is no way that name would clear the liberal watchdog group. -

It would be a shame if Roughrider wasn't chosen because of inane reasons such as it's the name of a condom or because Roosevelt was a racist. 1. Urban dictionary definitions and/or possibly nasty comments from opponents doesn't fly - Trojans (11), Beavers (10), Mules, Trolls, Blue Boys, Broncos, Cornhuskers, Flames, Gamecocks, Little Johns, Mounties - all these names could be given double meanings - I think they are probably handling it. I think if someone took the time you could find plenty of school nicknames that have slang double meanings. 2. Last I checked Roosevelt consistently listed among our greatest Presidents, plus it's been pointed out North Dakota is the Roughrider state, our highest state award is called the Roughrider. . -

I'm sure it's been noted that there are more than 50 universities that don't currently have nicknames - I'm assuming some must have athletic teams and aren't on any NCAA lists. -
Just wondering if this is your idea of creating a conversation.

I didn't say I agreed with it - my point was this is what we can expect to hear from those that feel it is imperative to have a nickname other than North Dakota. Just to be clear when we see those points my opinion is that it will be fear mongering. -

I am in the group that sees that those at the top of the decision making chain know how to play us like a violin. I am highly confident that if "North Dakota" is included as a voting choice, prior to any vote on the nickname options the following will be trotted out again: - The Big Sky will share that UND having no nickname would be a "concern" to "some" of their members. - Other schools have expressed concern in scheduling us because "No Nickname" means "ongoing nickname issues." (Have we really seen any of those schools step up and schedule us anyway?). - We will continue to lose recruits because "Other schools" will continue to use the fact that UND has "this nickname issue". - The NCAA will share that "perhaps" they might need to revisit the language and agreement with UND to better clarify their requirements to keep us off "the list". -
My point was that you can't judge how many people support an issue by just the number who show up for a rally.
-
People still get lunch "Hours"?
-
I would bet that half of the people at that walk were on the time clock for UND and getting paid.
-
Except it totally adds nothing to the conversation and once again misdirects the conversation to a pissing match. Bubba has already said they know how to evaluate talent and the fact that other schools are or are not pursuing athletes they are interested in has no bearing on their recruiting process. If all a school does is chase prospects based on other schools interests they aren't doing their job.

You aren't really trying to equate the number of people who show up for a rally with the number of people who support the issue of that rally are you? Just because I didn't show up doesn't mean I don't support the issue. On the other side there are plenty of people who are recruited to attend rallies that have no interest in the cause they come because a friend asked them. You really can't say that just because the rally didn't draw hundreds/thousands of people that no one supports the issue. You could say the same thing about the Walk that was held last year on campus after the Siouxper Drunk shirts - it was a very small gathering if your thought is that everyone who agreed with their issue was there.

Did anyone who really took any time to look at the process think it would have ended up otherwise? I can't think of any scenario where trying to appease everyone and letting everyone have a say in a decision doesn't turn out as a major debacle. I would love to hear how UND could have handled this in a different manner that would not have ended up as a major debacle - there is no way that some group was not going to be majorly unhappy with the results. -
