    2007 schedule

Not sure how I failed to include them in the speculative part of my first post, but CWU's schedule now shows at UND Sep. 15. I'll update my initial post with that info...
  3. Credit to Crimson Issue for the links... UNO hockey players arrested at Bluffs casino 2 UNO hockey players suspended for season
  4. I daresay most of us agree with you, Dak, that there is some threshold of damage to UND athletics at which we would support changing the name. I further think the likelihood of that increased with the reclassification to D-I. The pushback you're getting is people pointing out that most of that damage is currently still potential / theoretical. See, for example, previous posts of mine such as 210508 and 210426. Browsing that thread, you see a lot of us have similar concerns about possible future harm; however, since the actual likelihood and severity of that harm is unknown, taking drastic steps to mitigate it may be premature. That is, perhaps, why Sicatoka compared those of us raising the concerns to Neville Chamberlain
  5. I'm afraid the only news that could possible be big enough to bump this off the lead story would be if Gary held a press conference announcing he was leaving G.F. because he could no longer live in a state with a racist name like "Dakota".

    2007 schedule

My understanding is that the GPI doesn't actually have anything to do with playoff selection, nor does it attempt to mimic the playoff selection process (in contrast to hockey's PWR). Rather, it's just a ranking some guys made up because they felt their new website needed a ranking to help get mentioned in the press. From what I understand, it's simply the BCS methodology applied to I-AA. They slapped "leading predictor of tournament selection" on it to give it additional gravitas, though as many here have noted, it's not the same as the selection process so isn't necessarily an accurate predictor.
  7. I'll play contrarian a little bit... <contrarian> The problem with "savings rate" is that it's essentially an income statement. An income statement is nearly useless without a balance sheet. If you look at household net worth, it rose almost 10% last year. How much of "consumption" dollars went into investments that contribute to net worth? How much were net worths increased by factors that aren't counted as income (e.g. capital gains)? Savings rates are not an indicator of economic well-being, they're a counter-indicator. Why save when your net worth is growing? You save when you're worried about the future, when the economy is bad. </contrarian> No doubt that a lot of people live well outside their means. I think there's a fair chance that the rapid loosening of credit in the last decade is going to cause serious pain for a lot of people who took advantage of that credit, particularly those who overbought on housing. I do think we'll see a legitimate structural shift in net savings as boomers retire. When they quite socking away money into 401(k)s and IRAs and start withdrawing and spending it, then we're going to see some serious consumption.

    2007 schedule

You state opinion as if it's fact, and many of us disagree with your opinion. You're obviously a Bison fan and I'm obviously a Sioux fan, so we're biased, but the objective Massey ratings say: NDSU SOS 1.63 (#144) UND SOS 1.66 (#136) Those are almost indistinguishable, and undoubtedly within some margin of error. I'm not the biggest trumpeter of the Massey ratings, but it is one of the few objective formulaic ratings we have that consider all games and cross divisions. While other algorithms would undoubtedly have slightly different conclusions, that such an algorithm puts UND as having a slightly stronger schedule means the two were probably actually pretty close.
  11. Yeah, I bet we get a few unsubscribes from this weekend I'll admit I did not anticipate this particular crazy glitch. Though scores don't necessarily come across the wire in a reliably timely fashion, they've always come out consecutively before. The feeds from Mariucci, however, seemed random. They would put out a score from the 2nd, but then 10 minutes later put out a score from the 1st. While the program wasn't stupid enough to send that score out, it did record the "last seen" score as being from the 1st. Then if Mariucci sent out a score from the 2nd again, it looked like a new one so was resent. I get a message with every score change, so unlike the 10 or so you got, I got about 30. Needless to say I've patched things. It now ignores any updates in which either score decreases. Stupid Gophers
  12. I was about to go digging for the same post. Your arrival on the board was... perhaps less subtle and secretive than you thought. We are all waiting for the photo, though...

    New website

Unfortunately, the way DNS works, it takes a day or two for a given URL to fully propagate to a new server. During that time, some people see the old server, some see the new. It's possible that's what's happening; if so and you're still seeing the old one, you can hit the new one directly at: fightingsioux.xosn.com

    New website

Well, there she is, two whole days early: www.fightingsioux.com Congrats guys, looks nice.
  16. I'm actually also still running the old RPI formula against this season and wrote a short post outlining the differences. Bottom line -- Wisconsin and other teams with tough conference schedules are being penalized (relative to the old formula) for scheduling tough competition. Pointing out a useful feature of the details pages, North Dakota needs to win 5-6 of the remaining 8 games to keep its RPI steady given the strength of its remaining opponents.

  20. I would think a Bison fan would be more worried about reading this in reference to the Sioux: Like I said here: The warning that the games don't exist until they're scheduled is a fair one; the Minnesota crackdown came when Maturi was actively trying to schedule additional sports against UND. However, when the name issue gets resolved (hopefully before the end of our transition), our traditional hockey rivals' interest in playing UND in other sports will be a tremendous boon for decades.
  21. I think the comparison to NDSU is unnecessary and distracting -- it changes the discussion from an interesting "how does hockey affect UND's transition?" to just another UND hockey vs. NDSU football debate that fits better on a Bison board than here. Sticking to the question in the thread title -- there's no question that UND's 50 years of D-I hockey exposure has the potential to help UND's transition to D-I in other sports: UND's athletic department rolodex already contains a lot of D-I AD's. Those relationships can help in all sorts of subtle ways. See Maturi's recent attempts to get additional permission to play UND in other sports; there's little doubt Minnesota and Wisconsin would be getting UND on their schedules in the big sports on the first possible day if they were allowed to. While they're not on the table for now, there are quite a few other I's and I-AA's with whom we have similar relationships. The fans of a lot of schools we may want to play in other sports are already familiar with the UND Fighting Sioux from hockey. That will help build excitement for those games among fans of both teams. The media contracts and production capabilities that we built for UND hockey will be enticing to conferences. Though most subtle to fans, this has the biggest short-term impact potential.
  22. I agree with your sentiment, but don't actually believe it's the dominant attitude. Browsing back through this forum, the vast majority of us discuss with happiness good things that happen to Grand Forks, Fargo, Minot, Bismarck or North Dakota; as this thread shows, just one person with an agenda can really skew things...
  23. I've been meaning to offer this for a while-- While the sign-up page currently only supports signing up for UND notifications, the back-end system should support any team. If there are any fans of other teams lurking who would like to try this out for your team, just drop me a PM with the necessary details (cell phone number, carrier, and team name) and I can enroll you manually. After that, you can always unenroll yourself simply by responding to one of the text messages.
  24. My opinion is the same as it was then: Kupchella has been a great administrator for the University; under his tenure great things have happened in academics, research, funding, and enrollment. He hasn't particularly been buddies with the students and doesn't seem to be a huge sports fan, which is the base for a lot of fans' perception of him, though sports haven't exactly slouched under his tenure: 7 national championship games (vs. 0 in my four years under Clifford / Baker), REA / Alerus / Betty, and a willingness to work with all the interested parties to come up with a plan acceptable to all to begin the transition to D-I. In Kupchella, we're losing a known great administrator. The new guy will have different strengths and weaknesses and different area of emphasis. That's a little exciting, but certainly also a little scary.
