  1. If you truly want to know how the gophers jumped up read below. If you want to stay in your bubble and make up conspiracy theories, go to next post.

Minnesota flipped comparisons with Vermont and UMD because of AA's sweep of UMD. AA becoming a TUC added a win and a tie to the gophers record vs TUC's

As Brian said, 13-17 will be all over the board in the next 14 days.

Could come down to a huge play-in game with CC. CC already owns the comp with Minn but CC could flip a couple more if the RPI bumps a little more.

  2. I don't think it will turn them much. It won;t flip the individual comparisons in those games, and it won't help us in RPI, teams are all decent...we need to win and CC needs to win,

Can't wait for the Pairwise Predictor to come out on USCHO/CHN - Sunday perhaps?

  3. A Sioux win and a Denver loss tonight will put the Sioux in a 4 way tie for #4 in the PWR With Denver, Vermont and Northeastern.

Interesting stat that I hope is telling: UND has the second best TUC record of the top 25 after BU, and only Denver has played more TUCs.

Also only BU and (unfortunately) UMD have the H2H vs the Sioux.

What does this mean? Not much...its paper, but it gives me confidence come tournament time.

Wouldn't the sioux flip some more comps if the above happens and

    UNH beats VT

    BC beats NE

I think we could get to 21 and the rest would drop below that -we would be tied w/Mich at 21.

  4. That's pretty sad. This is a guy with the worst +/- on the team for all players.

    Wisco has 5 d-men that have played 30 or more games. McBain is a -12 the other 4 are +2, -2, -1, +7.

The only d-men in the WCHA that have worse numbers play for Tech, they have 3 (-15, -14, -13).

McBain is at the bottom of the league for d-men in +/- and also has lowest rating on his team by a large margin.

Before you start promoting a defenseman for Hobey/All-American, shouldn't the player at least be doing a good job on the defensive end?

Have you seen him play this year, besides against the Sioux?

  5. All the college writers and bloggers have beat the "look who Duncan played with" detail to death, well they should do the same thing with McBain. The Wisconsin D-corps is deep (Goloubef, McDonagh etc) on talent and they have a Senior in net which begs the question if McBain is so great why aren't the Badgers a top seed in the WCHA. A D-man has to be Carle or Leopold type good and their team more successful to win the WCHA MVP.

Depending on what transpires this weekend the only other player who has a good shot at the MVP other than Duncan is Stalock and perhaps the longshots are Rau if he can lead CC over DU this weekend and Lasch. If Stalock has a good weekend I could accept him winning as nobody expected much from UMD this season and he is the main reason that UMD is in the mix to host a first round playoff series.

    I just liked the picture.

McBain is probably the best D in the league this year, even if you agree with the above comments. The reason he is a candidate is because no forward has had a Vanek/Parise type of year either. It's definately not obvious.

I'd go with either Duncs or Salock.

You could make a good case our MVP is the freshman goalie. He stole some points for us last week.

  6. i dont think that matters. its a team game and when a player fks up others sometimes need to help out. sometimes they do and sometimes they dont. nobodys perfect and we all know that. not genoway or joe. this team especially has NO holes as scott owens said. i think joe has been damn good since coming back when there were indications he may not ever lace them up again for the sioux and maybe after that. genoway has his own style and big joe does. i like they way they play together. lets hope the team D keeps it up as they haven thad many hic ups since the new year. if they do and the boucnes go our way it could be a 5th straight trip to the f4

    This isn't personal - I haven't called him names.

We have injuries on the blueline and all need to step it up. We got 3 points last weekend but were dangerously close to getting 0, not for some outstanding goaltending.

That is what concerns me going forward, when we get into a loser - out situation, we cannot afford an off night.

This is why we need our best players to actually be our best players.

I just thnk Joe can play better. We can't win it all if he doesn't.

  7. Back to my original point - More goals given up on that D-line are mistakes because of Chay, not Joe. It's not always because Chay is playing offensive either. There was one CC goal this weekend that Chay was way out of position on D, chasing something he had no business chasing. Re-watch the majority of the games....if you even have that opportunity. Like you said, Joe should be playing some of his best hockey....but I don't think he's too far off from that. Yeah, he made one mistake on Saturday that led to a goal. Look how many other players on every team make a mistake that leads to a goal. Every player on every team has done it. We gave up 7 goals this weekend. Joe was even for Saturday, with that one goal given up. If Brad makes the save, which wasn't a hard save, no one is even talking about it. Sunday he was even as well... and IIRC not on the ice for any CC goals.

Joe has been solid and actually has been pretty good with the puck since a couple games after returning from his concussion.

I think you're way off-base with this whole Joe needs to pick it up mentality.

Do you think he was our best D vs. CC?

  8. Chay can still bring the puck up on the ice. He can still be part of the offense. All he has to do is keep in mind that he's a defenseman. It shouldn't be one of the forwards responsibilities for him being out of position. Our BEST games are when Chay doesn't try to do too much...and Chay actually has seen better point production because of it in those games. I'm not saying Chay should try to be the big lumbering oak defenseman, I'm just saying he shouldn't try to do too much, like he tends to do sometimes.

Back to my original point - the Sr. 1st round draft pick needs to be our best D if we want to play games in April. That hasn't been the case lately. In fact, I think his best weekend was v. UMTC in Jan.

He needs to be more physical, take care of the puck and make better decisions, especially when he knows his partner's role is to push the puck and take some chances on offense.

He needs to play his best hockey as a Sioux starting now.

  9. So there is a slim chance that we will play at Mariucci because it would be very unlikely for us to get a #1 seed because we won't be able to crack the top 4 in power and more than likely we will be a #2 seed if we sweep next weekend. If they don't want to put WCHA teams together and Denver would be the top seed, it is looking more like we will be someplace else unless they realize that we will have more fans than Denver and put them someplace else and make us the WCHA team if the gophers don't make it. I guess this is all making sense to me, but it is tough to figure out until everything is finished I guess. I just thought it this would be easier.

I think the only teams you can count on knowing where they will play would be Yale and NH, if they both make the tournament. BU likely is in Manchester, unless UNH falls to a 4 seed and the committe wants to avoid a 1st round conf matchup. Then they could go to Bridgeport - if Yale is #4 seed then BU would then have to face the host team in the 1st round. I don't think the NCAA wants to send BU to Grand Rapids or Mlps. It would be a real head scratcher for the committe if this scenario plays out.

  10. I am optimistic about this team's chances in the NCAA's. It will be hard to shut down this UND team totally, although a hot goalie combined with solid defense can do it. I like the current line combinations, but I am concerned that the loss of Lapoint will hurt the PK.

I too like our balance on offense.

With Lapoint gone, it is even more important that Joe Finley play like a Sr. 1st. round draft pick.

He should be our best defenseman every night. Lately he hasn't.

Especially with Genoway taking chances on offense, Joe needs to be a force in our zone and not give up the puck so often like he did this weekend vs. CC.

If Finley becomes our best player down the stretch, I like our chances.

  11. It's so unexpected whats going to happen between now and the 2010 season that one would be almost impossible but the depth chart for next year should look like... Two things I'm taking for assumptions..Vandevelde is gone and Forney is returning that leaves the team with two seniors.

    Forwards(14)

    Darcy Zajac

    Michael Forney

    Evan Trupp

    Matt Frattin

    Brad Malone

    Brent Davidson

    Mario Lamoureux

    Jason Gregoire

    Brett Hextall

    David Toews

    Brett Bruneteau

    Danny Kristo

    Mike Cichy

    Corban Knight (Assuming Vandevelde leaves)

    Defensemen (7)

    Chay Genoway

    Jake Marto

    Derrick LaPoint

    Corey Fienhage

    Ben Blood

    Joe Gleason

    Andrew Macwilliam

    Goalies(3)

    Eidsness

    Dell

    Harrington

I'll say it again - Knight will not come before Mattson.

It's not the only barometer but Mattson was ranked 55 midterm by NHL CSS - Knight is not ranked at all (Dylan Olsen was the only AJHL player ranked). If Knight's stock rises/Mattson's falls and they get drafted in a similar spot, things could change.

Last year, when we had 3 D available to come, Feinhage was drafted 3+ rounds higher than McWilliam or Gleason. Fienhage came - Gleason and McWilliam played jr's.

NHLCSS is not perfect - far from it - but it does give you a sense of where the "hockey world" is thinking about a players value.

I would hope Vandy stays for his Sr. year and both play Jr. next year - that would be ideal.

  12. Forbort will not fit the 'typical' situation. I don't know where he plans to play next season, but I don't think his arrival at UND will be delayed beyond the fall of 2010. He may well be a first-round draft pick, and some observers have compared him favorably to Erik Johnson at the same age.

If Forbort and Mattson come in 2010 we will have 8 D. Thats's too many and I'm sure both Mattson and Forbort will expect to play regularly.

  13. Thanks -- great link. The PWR table here continues to rank teams with RPI as the tie-breaker, as it has since that language was added to the championship handbook and me not yet having seen convincing evidence otherwise (despite CHN and USCHO doing it differently on their tables). What I don't understand is why, if Wodon knows it wrong, CHN continues to publish an incorrect table some two years later?

Sounds like we need to hold Wodon's feet to the fire when he posts his upcoming Bracket Analysis - let's check to see if he breaks PWR ties by RPI, even if the CHN rankings do not.

  14. Next year we will have:

    Genoway

    Marto

LaPoint-(assuming everything goes according to plan)

    Blood

    Finehage-SP?

Throw in Gleason and MacWilliam and you have 7, Including Miller they carry 8 this year and has seemed to work out quite well especially with injuries to Finley and LaPoint. Not saying they will but I could see them try and pick up one more D-man maybe not for this year but especially for the 2010 season. I just dont think it would hurt them, I mean unless they are superstar status right away they are probably gonna have to sit out games anyways.

They will not carry 8 D on the roster.

They don't need any more D in the short term. As mentioned previously, unless Marto or Lapoint go pro, in 2010 they will have Nick Mattson come in to replace Genoway. They will also have Forbert, who could get drafted as high as Mattson ready to come.

They will not bring in an 8th D for 2009.

  15. I know that UMTC holds the tie breaker over UMD and SCSU if the 3 teams are tied when the dust settles next week (SCSU beats UMD as well).

It is not out of the question for 4 way or even a 5 way tie (CC tie/Wisco split/UMTC, UMD, SCSU sweep = 31 pts).

Then what happens?:(? Do they just add up the head to head tiebreakers and who has the most is ranked on top?

  16. this series will be a dog fight as I believe the Badgers will come out very motivated and ready to play as I don't think they want us celebrating on their ice.

They didn't play very motivated in Mankato.

The Badgers could be one team where the draft picks spend this week talking to the advisiors making plans post-F5/1st round playoff loss.

  17. Bridgeport

    4 DU

    14 Ohio state

    5 Northeastern

    9 Yale

    Minneapolis

    3 Michigan

    13 Minn-Duluth

    6 Vermont

    11 Miami

    Grand Rapids

    2 Notre Dame

    15 Air Force

    7 North Dakota

    12 Princeton

    Manchester

    1 BU

    16 Bemidji State

    8 New Hampshire

    10 Cornell

DU is seeded 3 not 4. Both CHN and USCHO break PWR ties using the head to head PWR comparison, not RPI.

  18. Unless the gophers go to houghton and lay an egg this weekend they will get home ice and end playing a TUC team in the first round. so should they gophers get the X and win one game there I think they will get in as a 4 seed or possibly a low 3 seed.

I don't think UMD is going to lose to AA this weekend so the Gophers need 2 wins at 'Tech - when is the last time they had a road sweep? The last team to sweep Tech at home was Denver the begining of Dec.

It won't be easy to get 4 points at Tech - one 3rd period rally doesn't turn your season around.
