  1. I hope you're right. The FSN North website does not have them listed in HD though.

A network can put standard def programming on a HD channel. Watch the major network's evening news (save NBC - their studio cams are HD).

  2. Likewise, Duluth must win to have a chance. In fact, even if the bulldogs win the play in game, the gophers could still make the tournament. If Duluth loses, they're done.

Dogs and Gophs are in if this happens (Dogs loseThur.)

UMD and Minn are big Denver fans this weekend - its hard for Wisco to pass them unless they win Fri. The potential CCHA 3rd place game with NMU/Alaska is huge as well. It looks like OSU is out if Alaska wins, if NMU wins OSU jumps up, which hurts the UMD/UMinn.

  3. agreed.

on another note, it looks like there's not much agreement with me that olympic ice rinks would make for better college hockey. i'm kind of surprised by that. then again, maybe i shouldn't be surprised. after all, i may have an affinity for a solid passing attack, which i think the larger ice allows for, but most people probably like the speed of games on the smaller ice sheets.

i suppose it comes down to whether you prefer precision hockey or fast, hard-hitting hockey. i'm guessing the latter does sound more appealing to most sports fans. for me, there's just something about a finesse game where you can see the play development more.

On an olympic sheet, you will have more time and space, so there is a tendency for the puck to stop moving as quickly as an NHL rink.

Way back when in the '70s the Soviet/Montreal game at the Forum was as good as it gets re: precision hockey. Having less time and space actually showcases the skill level of great players ("How did he have time to make that pass/play/shot?).

Bobby Orr's skill was magnified on the small ice of Boston Garden - he had players hanging all over him and was still able to make rediculous plays few have ever made.

    That's my take.

  4. Thanks.. so what are we all so worried about?

Exactly - just keep winning, baby!!

Big sheet/small sheet; East/West; #1 seed/#2 seed - main thing is to keep playing well.

If we end up as a #5/#6 seed, I think Mich, Notre Dame or Denver will be a little nervous to see North Dakota in their bracket.

  5. i was all about getting a number one seed until i read some of these posts. now i'm thinking a number two seed would be more beneficial. i definitely don't want to go through the gophers on their home ice. michigan already has it out for us, so that's a risky option as well. i'll take yale over the other options hands down. plus, i had completely forgotten that the goofs play on olympic size ice. that is a clear advantage for any team in that regional who is used to the bigger ice.

personally, though, if i had my way, i'd make every college ice olympic size. i think it suits the style of college play better than the nhl size ice.

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

Ever watch Michigan Tech play on a Olympic sheet?

  6. Both Uminn and UMD get if this happens:

  7. yeah last night i did it and it was tough not to find the gophers in but it looks like may need to have to go 2-1 to get in for sure. the loser seems to be finished more than likely

In the below scenario, Duluth is in after losing the play-in game and Minn is out going 1-2 in the F5.

Hockey East Semifinal #2: Northeastern defeats Mass.-Lowell.

Hockey East Semifinal #1: Boston University defeats Boston College.

  8. That scenario puts UM in. AFA is #13 so they don't need the auto-bid. Gophers luck out at #15.

Using the PWR Predictor - I have tried getting 5 WCHA teams in but cannot so far.

Wisco beating UND in the final and UMD beating Den in the 3rd place game gets both in, with UMTC outside at 16.

  9. I tried for about 20 min this morning... I couldn't get UND into that 4 spot if DU beats Bucky.

Did I just become a Wisco fan for an afternoon? Anyone else 'figure' this out?

    Correct.

In the big picture, there is not a big advantage being #4 v #5 - the only way we get placed in Mlps as a #1 seed is if Mich or Notre Dame lose twice this weekend - unlikely - and if Minn is a #4 we get moved anyway to avoid a 1st round conf matchup.

If we want to go to Mlps, we would have to be a #2 seed, which is probably more likely right now than a #1 seed.

  10. If the other conf tournaments go according to chalk, for us to get #1 seed, we need Wisco to beat Den Friday. They only way we flip the comp is overcoming them in TUC and COP - it looks like we can't catch them in RPI if they only lose once in St. Paul.

Also, it looks hard to keep Minn out of the tournament.

If UMD goes 2-1 it looks like they are in (barring wierd stuff in other conf).

2 wins get Air Force in as conf champ but also put them in 13-14 in the PWR. This makes it easier for Minn to get in even if they lose Thur.

MSU can still become a TUC, which kills the Yale comp for us and prevents us from a #1. One way for MSU to become a TUC is for Alaska to win a game in the CCHA tourney.

  11. A Denver loss to WI and a Sioux win on Friday flips our comparison with them. It would tie COP, we would win the TUC, they probably will still have RPI, and we will have H2H. We would win the PWR 2-1, we'd have 21 then and they'd have 20. THat would bea number 4 seed overall and probably a regional at Mariucci...

Mich or Notre Dame will be placed in Mlps before us if we are #4.

    Hello Bridgeport.

  12. If MSU is not a TUC, it looks like the only way the Sioux can get a #1 seed is if they win the Final Five and Denver loses the third place game. So results that would be beneficial it getting Mankato back to TUC status are Alaska losing to Ohio State tonight, RIT losing in the AHA semis or Northern Michigan losing in the semis and third place game of the CCHA tourney. Those are the only teams that are close enough to falling and even then I would say an RIT loss is the only sure thing - the other results would make it pretty tight. Due to our loss to Michigan State, comparisons against Notre Dame and Michigan are unwinnable, as is the one with BU, so flipping Denver is the only hope to move that final step up.

As said above - we will probably go down in PWR, no matter what we do, if MSU is a TUC. After this weekend, Yale will have enough TUC games for this comp to count and if they win out, they will flip the PWR with us. If MSU is not a TUC they will not have 10 TUC games and the TUC comp will not be used and we can stay ahead of them.

Regarding Denver - if we both win Fri, we will gain RPI slightly due to our opponent being ranked higher in RPI (UMD and UMTC both have higher RPI vs Wisco - the winner's RPI will jump more after the game Thur). Beating Den head to head on Sat. may be enough to overtake them in the PWR.

Can't wait for the Pairwise Predictor/You are the Committe tools to come out within hours so we can see for ourselves what outcomes are needed to be a #1 seed.

If so, I can't see us being sent to Mlps, though. Notre Dame or Mich will get that call on Sun, if we are the 4th #1 seed.

  13. From the UND media guide:

    Blake: 40g 06-07

    Christian 41g 85-6; 37g 87-8

    D.Hextall 30g 72-3

    T. Murray 45g 85-6

    Smail 31g 84-5

    Parise 31g 06-7; 32g 07-8

    Career total

    Christian 340

    Murray 230

  14. So can one of the PWR experts answer me this, would the Gophers still be in the National tournament if let's say UMD finds away to steal the autobid by winning the Final 5? In that scenario, UND, Denver, and UMD would go. Or would the NCAA let 4 teams in from WCHA?

If they win the F5, they will have beaten strong teams to beef up their PWR to a point where they would be in regardless, probably 12-13 range.

If the pay-in winner goes 2-1 on the weekend, they probably sneak in. 1-2 I'm not sure.

  15. Speaking of the Minn HS Tournament -

anyone catch the interview between periods of the Edina game w/Marty Nanne re: one of his Edina teammates recently passing away?

Was that an Englestad/23 hat he was wearing?

There are several Edina connections to UND, including Brad Becker being Willard Ikola's son-in-law but I was suprised to see Marty wearing the cap.

The cap looked good with his black fleece.

  16. thats because they are on the bubble and pretty much assuming they may lose to scsu in their playoff series. if they do beat them they should be in the tourney and grab a 4 seed unless they can make a run in the final 5

if the season ended today which is doesnnt they would be in

cc and scsu have a lot more to worry about than winning their best of 3 series. the wcha could end up with just 2 teams in du and und if these other 3 dont win their series and we know if scsu beats minny then they would still have to win maybe 2 games in the final 5 to jump up. down year for the wcha as a whole. 2 teams making it top heavy then very mediocre

I don't think the bubble teams can afford to go 2-1 in their playoff series.

I think it would better for CC to play in the playin game and beat MN than have wisco or den upset so they jump to #3 seed. It would give them 1 more game with a TUC. I predict if they win the play-in game vs the Gophs they make the tourny, unless they drop a game to UMD in their playoff series.

  17. Historically speaking, they're patsies, gopherz. I'm assuming you know that, though, because that's why they were slated to play in the Mariucci "Classic". You don't exactly get invited to play into that tournament if you're a noteworthy opponent.

Mafia - we have plenty of content to trash Gopherz (Alex is back, etc.) - we don't need to trash NE. They had a good year (tied BU twice).

The larger point is to ask why the Gophs schedule a good NC road trip once/twice a decade.

Is this why they seem to have a problem handling adversity over the past few years? Especially at the end of the season?

  18. I have not forgot, just being optimistic  Although it was MTU, he looked like a changed man on Saturday. If Kangas plays like he did early in the season, the Gophers are far from mediocre. That being said, he might continue his 2nd half landslide and we could get rocked, I just don't see it.

I don't see a high flying no defense series. We'll see.

I only saw the last 5 min but when FSN played a highlight reel of his "great saves" Sat night, they were mainly Tech shots from out that hit him in the M.

Maybe he was having trouble with those saves lately.

Maybe his a changed man. Now he is playing like a bantam instead of a squirt.

    Good luck this weekend.

  19. Posted this in the other thread but it's more applicable here...

#4 CC vs. #7 UMD - UMD wins in 3

-Count me as someone who is thoroughly unimpressed with CC. Bachman has been a roller coaster, and I think Stalock is the better goalie this year. Duluth will be focused on shutting down that killer top line of CC, and if they can do that, I think Stalock can handle the rest. I see a low scoring series here, with all the games being decided by a goal or two. That being said, UMD might be down and out after AA and they could come out and get crushed both games. This is the hardest one for me to pick.

    [

Did you watch our team get swept by CC a few weeks ago? I also saw them give the conf champs all they could handle.

Anything can happen but I think CC is the darkhorse in the F5 right now.

It would be a barnburner if we end up playing CC on Fri nite of F5.

  20. Looking ahead using the "build you own PWR" at Slak.net.

If the favorites (higher seed not higher rpi/pwr) win the conf tourny games ...

    1. We end up 7.

If we want to move up we need Yale to lose along the way. We win that comp now but will lose it once they play 2 more Tuc - that will happen in the ECAC semis/finals.

Even if we beat Denver in the F5 they still have a slightly better RPI. It probably would go down if AA takes a game in Den this weekend. If not and Den only loses to us they get 3 in the PWR. To flip VT in the end we need them to lose a game this weekend before they would play and lose to BU in the HE semis (there is no 3rd place game in HE).

    2. The play in game is huge for the Gophs - if they lose it to CC, the Tigers pass them for 14 in the PWR (barring unforseen upsets in other conf playoffs that could effect PWR), even if CC loses the next 2 to us and Wisco/Den.

    3. But that doesn't mean the Gophers are out because, lo and behold, if the favorites win, the Falcons of AF would be 13 in the PWR. Without any other upsets the Gophers would be last in.

The RPI is so close for many of the comps that even one loss for a team if the first round playoffs could have a big impact on the rankings.
