  1. cindy crosby :silly: cindy i stepped up in game 7 and the whole damn series crosby :) ill take my chances with the kid :D

    I don't get the "anti-Sid" stuff.

I know he gets lots of hype. I remember we had a player that got lots of hype, too.

I think they have similar games, too. Not great size but will go to the net to get garbage goals.

Sid's good - let's give him his due.

  2. team usa just doesnt seem to be able to win big games and havent for a while now. decent showing overall and a bronze medal could be the end result. i really really hope when it comes to olympic time they go young and very young with the oshies, kessel, okposos, backes EJ ect.........my reasoning is the middle crop of usa players have been lacking imo, the older guys who were a fixture are now old. i can see a veteren or 2 on the team but i think the future is bright for team usa with parise, kane and others mentioned. just is hard to compare when you then think of russia and canada thinking of players like ovechkin, malkin and the rest of the red army and then canada with crosby, toews, iginla, hell i could go on for a paragraph on canadas young elite stars :D

USA hockey tends to pick all star teams rather than choosing a team that has some role players (face-offs, pk, grinders, etc).

Hopefully Brian Burke will not be influenced by the USA Hockey insiders and not be afraid to hurt some feelings if he has to when chosing his Oly team.

  3. Isn't it something they can learn though? If a player plays wing position must then not learn how to take faceoffs? Because they do from time to time.

Wings take face off's all the time (I think Langenbruner and Parise switched off depending on what side the draw was on).

That's not the main factor when determining Wing v Center. You usually want your center deep in your zone helping the D. Wings can stay high in the zone and be ready to use their speed to get up the ice and stretch the other team to create more space for the D/C. Once on the attack, positions are generally interchangable. On PP the wingers usually set up wide on their off wing and let a C or another big body bang in front with the opposing D.

An aside - it's too bad we didn't have the depth at center and had to move Duncan to C. I think it wore him out a little to play deep in our D zone instead of out high waiting for the breakout pass. He handled the switch well, but he was a better wing than a center.

  4. Yeah. NJ chose an ill opportuned time to suck.

Carolina faces Boston now. I have strong odds that, at best for Carolina, Boston takes it in 6.

Detroit plays Anaheim. Now, truthfully, Detroit should blow them out of the water. Reality-wise, part of me is saying 7 games.

I think the NHL analysts are far too complimentary of the Hawks D. I think Vancouver ends the Hawks' season... I'll say in 6. On a tangent, Luongo needs to get a new mask. His plain dirty white mask is UGLY.

Datsyuk takes the Selke Trophy again.

Washington's run ends in this next round.... I think they play Pittsburgh. Gosh... Two teams that are overhyped. I wish both teams could lose.

NHL on the Fly is going to be hard to watch. They'll spend 15 minutes of a 45 minute show analyzing every move Ovechkin makes and counteranalysing with Crosby's actions.

Top Losers of this year's playoffs thus far (in no particular order):

    1. San Jose

    2. Sean Avery

    3. Donald Brashear

    4. Mike Cammelleri

    5. Cristobal Huet (ok, he never saw the ice, but I think that's the point. He was brought in to replace Khabibulin and he became a sieve-like $$$ benchwarmer)

    6. New Jersey - Silver lining is that at least they made it a series... San Jose only made it close twice.

I'll add more, but right now, the only teams that get a pass on this list are Columbus and St. Louis. I think both teams did their very best to get where they ended up and could not be expected to have done more in the playoffs despite being swept.

Redwing had the Hawks dead and buried after game 4 in series one. And it also looks like he didn't watch much of the Ducks/Sharks series either. No one that paid attention expects the Wings to blow the Ducks out of the water.

  5. Do any of them play center? Because neither Gregoire or Hextall did last year and I only saw Kristo play at the World Juniors, so I'm not sure.

Kristo needs to play on the wing to take advantage of his speed and explosiveness. We don't want him stuck down deep in Dzone coverage.

  6. I would guess with the way VandeVelde, Frattin and Malone played in the last game against UNH and how much Hak liked that line that they would be paired together for the start of the year. The only way I think that won't happen is if they want Malone to play center but I liked the way he played on a wing with VV and Frattin. Also, I could see Kristo and Cichy playing together.

Just remember - Kozek and Duncan played together at the end of 07-08. Did they play a shift together last year?

  7. I think Rolston needs to go. I think Eaves or Blais would be a great coach(s) for the USDT and or the WJC team.

If Blais were allowed to really "take over" the NTDP, he would blow up the current system and make NTDP focused on summer training and exposing more kids to the training/experience. I know if Herb Brooks were in charge this is how the program would have been run.

There are plenty of high-quality Jr./Prep programs for elite U18 kids to play in during the winter if they feel they need to move from their current hockey situation.

The current framework of the NTDP would make more sense if Olympic hockey were still an "amateur" tournament.

  8. different players overall and the nhl is different now as well. porter was last late draft pick who never signed with chicago and vv will sign the minute he ends next season. will he make it as a nhl regular? who knows but he will get a shot after a year or 2 in the AHL like pretty much every other young player not drafted top 15 and ready to make a impact right away in the nhl. porter will be a up and down player for now but he was one of their last cuts last training camp so thats good for him and he has had a solid ahl season. all it takes is the one chance.

Sometimes even the top 15 is a crapshoot - ask the Wild about Pouliot ???

  9. looks like osh gets to keep playing for a while...

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=419725

I had a feeling he would be asked to play.

A good showing in Swiss could put him in the running for a spot on the Oly team next year. It's a good sign Brian Burke wanted him on the WC team.

He is a long shot for the Olympic team but he has been underestimated before. I wouldn't count him out.

  10. bayda and canes win with .8 seconds left, could have been worse for zajac and parise...they could have lost with .1 seconds left :D

tj oshie and the blues fall short and get swept by vancouver. hell of a rookie year for tj and the blues as well. that will be a team to reckoned with next season when they get EJ back and add another great young talent. the blues are for real again!

first former sioux to move on is ryan johnson with vancouver, congrats to ryan

zajac and parise tied up at 2 games with ryan bayda carolina

commodore and bluejackets go down 3-0 to detroit

toews and the hawks play game 4 wednesday night, hawks are up 2-1 in this series

FORMER SIOUX IN STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS - ELIMINATED and STILL PLAYING

    TJ OSHIE (blues)

    MIKE COMMODORE (blue jackets)

    RYAN BAYDA (hurricanes)

    RYAN JOHNSON (canucks)

    ZACH PARISE (devils)

    TRAVIS ZAJAC (devils)

    JONATHAN TOEWS (blackhawks)

I wonder if Osh is a candidate to join Team USA for the WC in Swiss?

  11. The 91-92 USHL showcase was this weekend in Chicago. Forgot to post about it earlier but next weekend is the 93 USHL showcase. I don't follow the locals to much, but there are some in both tournaments, here are the rosters,

    http://www.ushl.com/centralscouting/Showca...9192rosters.pdf

    http://www.ushl.com/centralscouting/Showca...9-93rosters.pdf

Looking at the rosters, it's shows how the game has grown - there are kids from all across the US, plenty from sun-belt states.

  12. I didn't realize Leddy had already proven himself at the college level.

Didn't say he did - just that it didn't hurt his career/development to stay at EP. He could play for us next year.

Maybe he could have improved his draft ranking a bit going to NTDP. Hard to say.

The NTDP is one option for high end players. USHL is another as well as staying in HS. Each kid chooses his own path - none are silver bullets.

Some in Canada wondered if Toews was making the right choice bypassing the CHL to play at SSS/UND. It's turned out pretty good for him so far.

After reading the story on Forbort, it could be that he is tired of playing for Randolph and wanted a change of scenery for his last year of HS.

  13. Totally agree with your post. Mattson must be on the 3rd unit. He showed some slick moves in the third when he stickhandled through the Russian team, unfortunatly Bourque was whistled for a trip behind the plan.

The US goalie was not good. Too bad the best high school goalie in the country was watching the game (fargo's Lee) and not playing in it. Maybe USA's goalie can slip on a Banana peal and they can more Lee in. Probably not even allowed, but I was thinking it during the third period.

    Go USA!!

I believe Lee is too old to play in this tourney - he will be the top goalie on the next USA WJC team.

  14. Reading more, it sounds like his coach is a little mad about the decision (ok, he is down right angry) and puts some of the blame on UND. Personally, I think that Forbort made the better choice, especially with the team becoming a full member of the USHL this next year. Forbort will play more games against better competition. His production and draft rankings may suffer, but I am sure his play will benefit. The coach is probably just made at losing his best guy and worrying about his teams ability next year.

Actually Randolph makes some good points - Oshie Lee and Niskanen did just fine without NTDP - so did Leddy, Gardner and McDonough. There are plenty of former NTDP players that turn out to be average/below average college players. There is no silver bullet.

The one point Randolph made about UND coaches pushing him to make this decision because they will need him "right away" doesn't make sense. In fact there will be a log jam at D without early departures in 2010.

    1. LaPoint - sr

    2. Marto - sr

    3. Blood - jr

    4. Fienhage - jr

    5. McWilliam - so

    6. Gleason - so

    7. Nick Mattson - fr

Unless they calculate LaPoint as a flight risk. Even so, there's still plenty of talent there without him. He wouldn't have to play "big minutes."

Maybe Derek got tired of Randolph - he's had an interesting coaching career to say the least.

It also looks like Randolph and his Bantam coach aren't always on the same page.
