  1. So, how do the Fighting Sioux score goals this weekend in Duluth?

The DECC ice is small, making it a whole lot easier for the Dogs to plug up the slot, taking away Duncan and Kozek's go-to shot from the dot. I'm guessing they'll gladly let the Sioux cycle the puck behind the goal and in the corners, but pounce on any centering attempt. (Do we know how to center the puck anymore? :) )

This team hasn't shown me the ability to break in on a goalie 2-on-1 or 3-on-2. All their nifty little no-look and drop passes have been swatted away harmlessly by back-checkers, and the dreaded (or dreadful) cycle ain't gettin' it done.

Where are the goals going to come from?

And who's going to step up?

IMO ... What we are seeing is the result of the cream of the crop of the outstanding 05 class leaving early. The rest of that class is a notch (or 2, 3) below the NHL'ers. Finley being hurt is obviously a factor as well.

Add to that disappointing results from the 06 and 07 classes (Vandy and Genoway are excluded - Forney not working out is huge). If not for the 08 class (especially Gregoire/Eidsness/Hextall) things would be much worse.

As I said in a previous post, this may be as good as it gets this year. If Eidness continues his development, he could steal some games for us.

I think you could see the Freshies make more of an impact in the 2nd half, once Toews gets his legs back and Blood/Fienhage get more playing time.

  2. Both games are on Charter Mainstreet this weekend, which means they are on statewide on Charter, Comcast and Mediacom.

Well, maybe not statewide for both games - just checked my TV guide and it says Friday's game is on but Saturday is not - I have Mediacom though.

    From UMD's pre-series press release -

    http://www.umdbulldogs.com/uploads/UMDHockeyRelease7.pdf

Both Bulldog-Fighting Sioux clashes this weekend will also be televised live by Charter Communications (cable Channel 15). Mark Fleischer and former UMD standout Judd Medak are serving as the on-air talent for Charter Communications, which is slated to televise 11 regular season games in 2008-09. The games will be carried on Charter Communication

  3. Did they play in 1978 somewhere in the state. It seems to me that Kevin Maxwell missed his first game in the Winter Sports Arena because of a fight. My impression was that game was in Minot or something but I definitely could be wrong.

There was a time they would play 2 exhib. games with UMTC. I saw one game in Eveleth in '78 and Hibbing in '77. I believe they also played in Minot both years as well.

  4. i think they are more comfortable with miller right now with our defense producing close to nothing points wise. 5 of our real d men have a goose egg for points and i think the coaches like what he brings right now over fienhage. guys like marto and lapoint have to start producing in the scoring column with their offensive talent. i think miller brings that as of now with finley out. corey has played fine when in and im sure he will get more chances as the season goes on. i rally like what he and blood bring overall. a very nice freshman pair of d men

All things being equal, it doesn't make sense to play a senior, journeyman forward at D versus a 3rd round draftee/Minn Mr. Hockey finalist. From the games I watched, I thought Fienhage's strong suit was his puckhandling and passing - rarely has he had to resort to banking the puck off the glass. He was almost always tape-to-tape with his passes. He had some turnovers but so have all the D (especially our Sophs).

I could see him rotating in/out of the lineup with someone (LaPoint and Marto did last year) but he would have been 0-4 if not for the injuries in CC. It doesn't make sense - off ice issues???

Miller has had good moments on the power play (rebound goal on Sat), but he has also looked unsure at times (hesitating with the puck at the point, leading to blocked shots on 2 consecutive power plays Sat).

Generating offense/points from the blueline comes from forwards converting on the power play, cashing in on rebounds, and finishing off rushes that the D start with a good breakout pass. The bottom line is the forwards need to score to get points for the D.

Currently, this team only has one player that will scare the other team when they have the puck (Genoway). The past few years we had multiple players that could turn the game around with one play. I don't see that yet with this group. Gregoire is dangerous below the dots but I haven't seen him breakdown a WCHA D-man on a rush yet. Toews will get better as he recovers from his injury. I think a Gregoire/Toews/Hextall would be a good combination - maybe next year.

This may be as good as it gets this year - .500.

One positive - Eidsness is probably the most talented goalie we've had here since Belfour. If he can play consistently like he did Sat. he could keep us in a lot of games, even games we don't deserve to win.

It will be interesting to see if Hak can coach

  5. Parise leads the Devils in scoring right now. In Lemaire's offense, his scoring would drop DRASTICALLY.

I don't think Blake would be happy in Minny either.

I do agree a TON with the sentiment about top scoring talent not wanting to play in Minnesota. They just don't play a wide open offense-first style. For good or bad, that's what top scorers want in a team.

Gaborik is oft-injured, true. But I wonder if he were on a team like Washington or Pittsburgh or even Detroit, what would happen? Marion is forced to look defensive first and then jump into the play offensively whenever possible. That forces him to play more physical, something not really his style. I see him as a finesse player. Lemaire is a type of coach that prefers the type of play that Montreal made famous when he was still a player mixed with the trap/left wing lock. snoozer city. I doubt even Maurice Richard would score a ton of goals in Lemaire's system.

Gaborik goes to an offensively oriented team and his point totals will AT MINIMUM double.

My opinion would be that Minny goes after young, top notch 2 way forwards like Bolland on Chicago or Getzlaf in Anaheim (I think...).

OH! Speaking of wastes, Barry Melrose lost his job today or yesterday. Seriously... Is TB the Oakland Raiders of the NHL? How can a head coach turn a team around with one great new player and a new system in less than a season? Unless Melrose resigned, he got royally hosed.

I know you don't like the Wild/Lemaire but get your facts straight.

    1. The Canadiens were an offensive machine during their run in the 70's, not "snoozer city" hockey. They were always at/near the top of the league for goals scored. (Check hockeydb.com if you want to look at the numbers) The also won 4 cups in a row.

    2. Gaborik has averaged more than a point a game the past two years. There is no way he would score 160+ points in the East (Ovechkin led the league last year with 112).

I know you like to rant about the Wild/Lemaire (it's a free country) but keep it real.

  6. blood and fienhage have held their own so far so its great that they are getting games this early. these guys are getting big time experience already. miller needs to fill genoways role with rushing that puck up coast to coast then deciding on what to do with that puck. go sioux........i expect to see some hitting this weekend by both teams!

Agreed - the "Freshies" have held their own on D. They do give us the size we may have been lacking the past couple years. Obviously they weren't expected to replace Chorney's and Bina's offense.

The players that need to start playing like veterans are Lapoint and Marto - too many minuses on the scoresheet for them.

  7. Since the refs seem to be actually enforcing the hooks/holds/interference this year (along with some phantom ones), I think it is best to be in an offensive mindset. The more pressure that can be placed on the opposing teams defense the more powerplays I would expect to see. We can draw a lot of penalties if we keep up a relentless forecheck and cycling down low.

So far this year we are averaging 37 shots/game and giving up 28. I like those numbers.

I think the goaltending will improve as we go and getting the defense healthy will also help the goaltending.

Even though we are only 3-5 so far, IMO we are passing the puck MUCH better than we were at this stage of the season last year or any year under Hakstol. If that continues (and gets even better), and the goaltending and defense comes around, I think we stand a very good chance of winning #8 this season. Goaltending and getting/staying healthy are the keys.

It's too bad our horses we've had here the past few years could have played with the current rule enforcement. The goal judge would have been very busy at the Ralph.

It's obvious we haven't been finishing like we should (see our power play numbers). It will be interesting to see if a team with few offensive stars can succeed this year now that more penalties are being called.

  8. This team is all Haskstol if I am not mistaken. I think last season was the last of his boys... Maybe someone can correct me on that.

Don't forget that assistant coaches do a lot of recruiting.

Hak and Brad Berry did a lot of recruiting under Blais, as does Eades and Jackson now.

  9. Kristo just assisted on Team USA's fourth goal, feeding Nicastro as he stormed in from the blueline on the powerplay. I can't wait to see Kristo and Cichy in the Kelly Green. Has Nicastro committed to anyone?

Then MacWilliam gets a checking from behind and misconduct and the US has made them pa with two PP goals. I think it is safe to say that the third period won't change the outcome of this game.

Now Kristo gets a PP goal of his own 7-1 USA.

You can watch the archive of the final game at tsn.ca

  10. Unless they changed scheduling from a weekend series to travel partner system, so Friday and Saturdays have different opponents. (DU/CC, UND/Bemidji, UM/UW, UMD/MTU, SCSU/MSU-M). If UAA could get a travel partner (UAF or UBC), it could work. But either way, a lot of history changes.

Just remember Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame used to be part of the WCHA. There has always been teams moving in/out of the league.

The only thing that would "kill" the conference would be the defection of UMTC and Wisco to a Big Ten hockey conf.

  11. the good thing about this weekend is the sioux scored goals and showed signs of a balanced attack to a degree vs the best goalie maybe in the nation. they played tonight banged up on the blueline with blood (cut), jones (broken hand i believe) and finley out and fienhage flying in last minute for tonights game. cc is a damn good team and a split is what most thought would be realistic and that happened. of course when the friday win happens then you want a sweep but it didnt happen. lets hope the sioux have enough d men to fill 6 spots coming up and if not then miller will stay there im assuming. getting 7 goals on bachman during a weekend doesnt happen often at all but when you do get 4 its tough to see a team lose. lets get that sweep next weekend vs the sea puppies

It was very strange to have Finley go on this trip and not play. We had 5 healthy D + Miller on the trip. If Finley was iffy to play why not bring Finhage along just in case - instead of the hassle of flying him in on Sat.

    Very strange.

  12. if genoway, jones and finley can't go tonight who plays on the blue line or do we just rotate 4 D? if all three can't go it wouldn't bode well for a favorable outcome tonight. is Fienhage hurt? why would you bring Finley if you don't want to play him over Fienhage?

Fienhage is either hurt or in the major doghouse for Miller to be taking his place this weekend.

  13. Here are numbers that need to change to become a contender this year

    Special Teams

    Power Play 5/46 10.9

    Penalty Kill 26/33 78.8

    http://www.uscho.com/stats/team-details.ph...m/sort,PTS.html

We can't blame our young D for these numbers.

Our best players are on both special team units, obviously playing against the other team's best. Maybe our "best" aren't as good as our opponents?

During our Final 5 run (and before) we have been spoiled with "NHL almost-ready talent" - the 06 and 07 classes did not have that type of player and it is showing now with the early departures gone.

We could still be a contender but we will need to rely on winning ugly this year along with great goaltending.

  14. Oshie got hurt in tonight's game... from the Blues fans it sounds like he tweaked an ankle/knee on a faceoff... skated off under his own power but was favoring one leg... we'll have to see if he misses any games and how that affects his play.

EDIT: I'm hearing high ankle sprain

    Lower body injury

  15. Re: Defense

I believe most of the goals scored on us have been special teams (pp/sh!)

Goals for has got to go up. It was good to see more scoring chances in P3.

If we play the rest of the season like we did in the 3rd period we will have a good season.

  16. I think Sioux fans look bad when we go out of our way to whine about the Gophers (Final 5 at the X, MN Hockey Showcase, FSNorth, etc).

We don't need to complain about all their "advantages." It doesn't matter/we can't change it. I don't think our coaches/players care.

    Only one thing matters.

    7>5

  17. It hurts the integrity of the league when teams don't have to play under the same conditions. I know, I know its good for the league. Maybe every team should have to give up a home game and play at the X. I wonder what the commissioner would say if the Ralph talked Anchorage or Michigan Tech into giving up home games and take part of the proceeds from a weekend in the Ralph.

Oklahoma plays Texas every year at the Cotton Bowl, essentially a home game for UT - no outrage.

    Calm down.

  18. if you seriously couldn't tell the difference between the two, then i guess you are just another hopeless goofer fan ;) . this is why kaip couldn't go with bruess - link below -, and i already posted earlier what happened to bruess the following season. the difference is kaip wouldn't pull the !@$! talk or stick work, then refuse to drop the gloves. white won't, or can't, for whatever reason do this. and kaip didn't fight to prove he was tougher, he did it because it needed to be done. this fight against anderson turned the season around for the sioux, as they rolled to the frozen four... that is the difference.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6DtM-IUIgE

listen to the crowd, look at his team, there was a purpose for that. i am not saying white not turtling and fighting back would have done that for your team, but don't you want a little fight and backbone in your team? you guys are good this year, i'll give that to you, but if you lack anything, you lack toughness. kangas may mask that as i think he is one of the top goalies in the nation, but that was not the discussion here... actually this is a sioux/badgers thread, so sorry sioux fans for the rant.

    GO SIOUX!!!

What about the other Gophers who were on the ice just watching White take one for the team. All of them should have jumped on the pile - do you think Shep would have been able to figure out who to penalize?

The video also shows that WCHA refs don't handle fights like NHL refs do. Once a real scrum starts in the NHL, the rest of the players are ordered to the bench - ejections and fines come if they don't.

  19. Saturday game at the "X". Gophers play home Friday at Mariucci and Kato is considered the home team at the "X" Saturday.

Then SCSU plays UMD at the NHC on Friday night and Saturday they play at the "X" where UMD will be considered the home team.

*Both games at the "X" are conference games that are counted in the WCHA standings.

Supposedly only 6K seats have been sold for this tourney......seems a bit odd.

No game for SCSU and UMD Friday - they will play a single game in Duluth on 11/29

UMD plays at SCSU later in the season (1/9-10)

  20. Looking back it looks like it was on channel 23 in the past and that slot is open on Comcast regular cable, so I'd guess there is a good chance that is the correct channel again this year. Nothing shows on the Comcast schedule but "local origination" so hopefully that's a good sign.

    Comcast St. Paul Ch 13

WCHA Hockey Fri/Sat night at 7 pm

I believe Fri it is UMTC at SCSU - Sat UND at MSM
