  1. I say this is less about the nickname and more about the other Big Sky presidents not happy about UND coming into the Big Sky alone. In a time when schools across the country are trying to cut expenses, they are not happy traveling to the Eastern Dakotas for one school. If USD had gone with UND, I don't think they would be threatening to deny UND's acceptance to the conference.

There are an awful lot of Presidents in the Big Sky that don't want UND in, and this is the perfect opportunity to get them out.

That is news to me. You must have heard some things that the rest of us haven't. I've actually heard the opposite and more Big Sky presidents have talked about how happy they were to add UND, even if it was alone. Believe it or not but I think this is exactly what the letter said, the Big Sky presidents are afraid of the push back they will get from the NCAA.

  2. I am sure that at the Big Sky meetings of School Presidents that President Bob did his "best" to explain that UND actually has the support of the Spirit Lake Tribe and was given approval by Standing Rock in a tribal ceremony that is binding and irreversable according to their traditions and culture, and that given the chance the current members of Standing Rock would also overwhelmingly give their support of the continued use of the Sioux name, so either the Big Sky Presidents are dense(entirely possible) or Bob has a hard time explaining the facts of the issue effectively(more probable). ;)

You have no idea of how it went down and we can both assume what we want. If Bob laid out the facts, exactly how they stand right now, the current agreements and laws that are in place don't make the NCAA happy. That is the truth and the fault for that can be spread around to a lot of people spread over a number of years. The truth is this is this isn't about making the BSC happy, its about making the NCAA happy, and we've had a few years to accomplish that and haven't. As clearly stated in the letter the BSC is part of the NCAA and there isn't a school in there who is going to ruffle the feathers of the NCAA for the sake of a school who hasn't started conference play yet.

  3. Because that conversation has been said over & over - Try starting your own thread & see how much interest & support it gets - I promise not to post on it or read it anymore

There is still Hope & I will never lose that Hope as long as we still have a chance

    http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090405111238AAQw23U

Nice link. Who's quiting? The school can change the nickname and its not going to affect how I feel about the teams, how many games I go to or my season tickets. All I'm saying is I hope there was a plan B when state legislation was passed. There has been more momentum and interest in all UND sports since the announcement of the Big Sky. There are a lot of examples of that. I don't think being forced to drop the nickname will change that, I personally believe losing the Big Sky will.

I am simply stating its time to move into Plan B or the second phase of the state legislatures plan or the die hard nickname supporter's plan, surely there is one right? I hope plan B isn't just to sit around and wait for a vote that may never happen and badmouth anyone who disagrees with their opinion and see's the importance of conference affiliation if we want the successful, well rounded athletic dept we once had.

  4. The divide & wounds will not heal if the NCAA does not re-examine this - why would they want this when they know how important it is not only to UND & Grand Forks but North Dakota

You pro name droppers for the sake of D1 - go start your own thread & have your minority Fun

Why can't you have a conversation with someone who disagrees with you? Why have them start their own thread? If you thought something like this wasn't going to happen you are lacking vision. Everyone, including the state legislature was warned about this but didn't want to listen. I wish the NCAA would agree to a meeting but in reality they don't have to. When you are the only show in town, you can call your shots. It works that way everywhere in life. Its not always fair, but its the world we live in.

  5. I think it's becoming clearer that the Sioux nickname matter is less about the NCAA - they have already spoken- than it is about conference affiliation and scheduling of games that we really need to be scheduling. I think the timetable for settling the entire issue was just moved up.

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/206310/group/homepage/

Agreed. I hope all the state reps who turned this into law had a plan B for when something like this happened. I know they were warned this was a real possibility.

  6. Not a peep out of the Big Sky about UND's nickname.

As stated numerous times before, the Big Sky - nor almost any other league - doesn't care.

The UND nickname was politicized by the Summit League as a ploy by certain parties to delay our membership and harm our transition and DI identity. UND's leadership wanted to gain brownie points among the academic elite and wanted blame directed elsewhere, so they bought into it.

Thank you again Big Sky and Doug Fullerton for delivering us from manipulation.

    Here is the peep.

  7. In the eyes of the NCAA lying to them is far worse than any violation in their volumnous "thoust shalt not" journals.

Your absolutely right and that is what I was getting at. As soon as they found out he lied to them all gloves are off. Even if its Ohio St. there is no way the NCAA is going to let anyone leave egg on their face*.

*They alread do a good enough job of that themselves

  8. I know what I'm about to say will be unpopular so please hear me out before you hit the "negative" comment button. Everybody is saying what a terrible cheater this guy is, and really all he did was turn a blind eye while his players sold equipment and received perks from alumni. Although those things are clearly against the rules it's not like he stole other teams play books or paid off officials. Sometimes I think that the NCAA creates the conditions that encourages players and coaches to break the rules in this fashion.

Mistake #1 was lying to the school and the NCAA. If he would have been honest upfront it wouldn't have looked so bad. Turning an eye is being nice. Its different when a coach sets up meetings with these players and alumni. There is speculaiton that Tressel has done that in the past. Huge difference.

  9. We lost our house in Minot Monday night. Probably to the main level by now. Not looking forward to the messy cleanup, but I'm sure some folks on this board have been through it.

Sorry to hear that as well. Thoughts are with you and everyone going through the hard work and tough times that come with fights like these.

  10. 2013

    vs Montana State

    @ Kansas St

    2014

    vs Montana

    @ Iowa State

    2015

    @ Montana

I can just about guarantee there will be more games with Montana State. Taylor offered UND a reasonable deal, every other year home and homes and your ad said no. Taylor isn't making excuses anymore, he just doesn't want a yearly game and it is hard to blame him when looking at our future schedules. He won't budge on that, the next AD won't budge on that, it doesn't make sense for NDSU or UND to play an annual game. One school basically gets stuck with just five home games every other year if that is the case. That isn't acceptable in Fargo and I doubt it is in GF either.

Your probably right, it no sense for the 2 largest schools in the state with one of the longest running rivalries in the country to not play each other every year any more. And 70 miles is such a long distance to travel that I would be pissed if I had to drive it or had to watch the game on TV. Just more excuses. They are pretty good though, pass them along to Gene for the next time he gets asked the question.

  11. NDSU doesn't want to play the game because what is the point anymore? I want them to play, the school doesn't probably for several reasons no one has listed on here. I'd guess one of them being they don't want it to be an annual game, wasting a yearly game on UND instead of playing either a FBS or high-level FCS (Georgia Southern backed out, Stephen F. Austin, etc) is not something NDSU wants to commit to.

Another reason, NDSU has done much better job recruiting than UND, say all you want about the 3-8 season, that team just sucked, don't know why, and I dont really care, they were just bad. That was the type of team that could have lost to UND, I still think they would have beat UND by a couple touchdowns, but you never know I guess. A loss to UND could turn a lot of recruits up North.

Yet another reason, joking mostly, but why allow a game in the Alerus to sell-out? We all know the only way that UND puts more than 8 or 9 thousand in there right now is if the Herd comes. ;)

In all seriousness however, both schools have a lot going on now, UND will be playing a 9 game conference right? NDSU schedules an FBS, a cupcake(sometimes two), and usually an upper-middle tier team. Each school will probably publicly say they want to play(UND more than publicly) but it just isn't in the cards. One of the two schools has been down to play ever since NDSU's jump to D-1, just never at the same time. I'd like to see the game played, but the only way that it probably happens is if UND cries to the Legislature to force it ;) or if they both qualify in the playoffs, in which case, I'd like to welcome you to the Fargodome. Don't get too offended when all you hear for 3 hours is Sioux Suck !@#$.

Like I said, talk is cheap. If you truely thought your team was that much better for every other point to be true, you wouldn't worry about losing recruits. That is already starting to happen Your starting to sound like Gene Taylor with all those excuses.

  12. Glad I can amuse you. Not scared, just realistic.

The fact is I am confident that if NDSU played UND this year, NDSU would win. But, being a competitor I realize any time you step on the field with a quality opponent in could result in a loss. With that in mind, it doesn't make sense for NDSU to play UND any time in the near future, because a loss would eliminate NDSU being viewed as the superior program.

This is the same reason Minnesota isn't happy about playing NDSU, are they scared? No. They just realize the negative press that comes with losing to a team that is viewed as inferior by the general public.

Honest question for you homer, have you seen NDSU play in the last couple of years?

Yes, I have. More than a few times.

Its easy to spout off on a message board about how good you think your team is. Talk is pretty cheap though and really means nothing. What tells it all though is when someone says how they are superior but than says they don't want to play the game. Your Minnesota example is pretty flawed as they have scheduled you 3 times, they even scheduled ndsu after they should have been beat twice. Doesn't seem like they are as concerned with the negative press as you want everyone to think. They say they are better and they are willing to prove it on the field. They aren't talking about what will happen if or when they get beat unlike yourself.

  13. I do not speak for NDSU, I speak for myself. And if your team wins a conference title in football, and you finish super high ranked, what else can you do I guess. Remember, the fans and the school are seperate entities.

Wow, thank you for explaining that. That clears a lot up.:lol:

  14. The Great West was a bit different then. SDSU was there, we were there. And in a conference with 5 teams or whatever it was, we scheduled several FBS teams and did pretty dang good against them. I think we are 4-2 now against FBS, during our transition we were 3-1 I believe. I don't care about winning conference titles when it is not getting you into the playoffs, I care more about the product on the field. Tell me, is UND going to finish with the #1 National Ranking in one of the next couple years?

Well ndsu must think its a big deal because they gave out conference championship rings to the team that won the Great West. They made kind of a big deal about it.

  15. Believe it or not Central Michigan is the best FBS team we played so far. They would have been middle of the road Big Ten team that year.

I was talking about continuing playing USD every year. I could care less about Central Michigan.

  16. When did Central Michigan and Ball State become part of the Big Ten or Big 12? If USD was following the NDSU model then wouldn't we be lining up MAC schools?

Our AD has been pretty clear about our model going forward, a MVFC schedule and one midwest based FBS game, what he does with the two other games is of the most concern to me. I would like to see one home and one road FCS game each season with one of those games being UND every year. No D2's or NAIA's, please.

I would like to see that as well.

  17. Really that's what you're hanging your hat on?? A few GWC titles against the worst of the worst. Until you actually beat someone in ANY sport and start doing it regularly - your first year in the BSC will be no fun. ;)

I always appreciate you interest in Fighting Sioux athletics Dan. And since you pay so close attention to what goes on here and always have an opinion than you should know how much our teams have improved over the transition. Has it always been pretty? No it hasn't. I guess I would be concerned if we weren't beating these worst of the worst teams. That hasn't been the case. We have been beating those teams and than some and improvement has been happening. Now with a nice conference, arguably the most impressive schedules of all the Dakota schools, and a lot of youth that has gained a lot of experience the last couple of years, things are headed in the right direction.

  18. What do you base this on? Minnesota and Wisconsin (as well as Michigan and Michigan State) have highly successful hockey teams and are a major draw which many teams will fall backwards over to play, especially if they can get them to play at their opponents rink. UND is a highly respected team in hockey and they do generate a following but given the choice between playing UND or Minnesota/Wisconsin, I think most teams would choose the Big Ten schools. Consider this, although it is not the same, NDSU will play Minnesota but not UND because they perceive it as a better game for them for a couple reasons starting with money and the hype that it provides to its program.

]I think it hurts UND more than Minnesota/Wisconsin to not play each other. Maybe not immediately but over time. It could be argued that Michigan (and to a lessor extent, Michigan State) had strong rivalries with UND when they were in the WCHA and look at the lack of a rivalry with those teams now.

Your right, that is not the same at all. UND isn't going to pay ndsu a couple hundred thousand for a game. I'm also guessing if UND hockey was to pay a school that amount of money they would sign the contract in a second. The money has a lot more to do with it than the hype, don't kid yourself. That game is no different than NDSU playing Wyoming or Colorado St. And a final fact and maybe someone could help me find it cause I know its listed somewhere, take away the outdoor game last year at Camp Randall and something like 4 of the top 5 attended games at Wisconsin for hockey when they played UND. Hell the top attended games for most schools in the WCHA aren't when they play Minnesota and Wisconsin, its when they play UND.

I don't agree with the earlier statement that it will hurt Wisconsin more than UND but I won't get on a board and post absolute nonsense to try and prove a point.

  19. Congrats to Shane and his team. That is a pretty neat accomplishment.

I know we are missing a big or two in our last few years of recruiting but I will give Jones credit that he is finding talent and has been able to pull it from some good programs. The improvement has been noticeable.

  20. I'll take our transition and post transition scheduling over your's any day. I think the results speak for themselves. Hell I think you only have 5 or 6 FCS (non transitioning teams) wins since your transition so if I was you I'd be more concerned about those than FBS wins.

Transition is the key word. It hasn't always been pretty but after seeing the young talent at the spring game I'm excited about that. Our first two years schedules after transition are better than anything ndsu has thrown together the last few years.

There is no denying it hasn't been pretty at times but its a transition for a reason. We're headed in the right direction. It took a few years to sort out the mess our previous AD left us but everything is starting to fall into place nicely.

  21. Oh come on guys, I get it, this is a Sioux board but let's not forget who offered an every other year deal. Yes, it was Gene Taylor and UND said no. Now UND and their fans seem to understand the every other year offer since you're in a conference with more than four other teams. Oh and for the record, I could care less as well but damn it would be fun. I, like most Nodaks have good friends who support both schools and back in the day it was one big party leading up to the game. Lots of trash talk, but all in good fun. In fact I'm willing to bet that if you took most Bison and Sioux fans from these boards and put them next to each other at a tailgate everyone, well minus a few select posters on both sides, would have a blast. Sorry to bust up your Gene bashing fest, please feel free to continue.

I was only partially joking when I typed it. ;) I think everyone understands the scheduling. It was an opportunity to poke the man who's already had 3-4 excuses on why scheduling couldn't be done when everyone really knows he just doesn't want to schedule the game cause of what happened in '03-'04. Not the nickname or the conference or the all ready full schedules, its about the past and I'm fine with that. Its just funny watching the excuses pile up. Until than its just comparing two teams that don't play. No way to prove who is better. That was really the point of my post.

P.S. I agree with you on the tailgate party. It would and will be fun when it happens. And everyone who says they have moved on will be the first in line to buy tickets.

  22. I agree, Fargo needs to do something about the flooding but for you to take a cheap shot about storing their sandbags is a real !@#!$ remark.

darrell is a resident of Fargo who fights the flood year in and year out. I'm pretty sure as a resident who has put his time in fighting the flood his comment was not out of line. I think you need to chill out. You realize you are upset about him making a comment about "their sandbags" and not any form of flooding that has happened in his own town.

  23. Funny to hear Bison fans rip on UND for losing 45-0 to Idaho and go 3-8. Don't they know new season, new team. But I guess only them can go 3-8 one year and playoffs the next but UND could not go 3-8 and turn it around. Typical crap from Moo U.

It all boils down to our QB play and more consistent play from our secondary. The main issues we had last year are what caused them problems the season they where 3-8. Bottom line is I saw a lot of improvement just throughout the spring. I could care less what they think as the only way to truely compare teams will be when Gene finally runs out of excuses and finally schedules us. Until than its all talk.
