  1. During a period break of last night's hockey game, I noticed a tall young guy in the Sioux Shop wearing a T shirt referencing the Illinois 6A or 8A football championship. He appeared to be there with his father. After looking at his photo, I think this may have been Ryan Bartels, the Illinois QB recruit. Anyone know if other recruits were in town this weekend? Seems like a good time to bring some prospects through before the dead period.

I believe I heard there were about 10-12 recruits in town for the weekend.

  2. Woods was quoted as saying just that in the article. Marcus Horne's HC told the forum staff that he had. Only thing I remember about Mollberg was that if Iowa didn't offer then NDSU is on the list.

Paper from his home town had an article that said ndsu offered a full ride and he was waiting for a visit from UND to see what they were going to do. ndsu was the front runner at that time before he had even spoken to UND. You can tell the story however you want but UND never offered the kid. I'll take it as what I have heard and they had WR higher on the list. Not a knock on either the school or the kid but its how coaches evaluate talent. In a few years we'll see who was right.

  3. The fact is UND didn't offer. The fact is you have no idea what was said in that living room. Are you a booster? If so how are so connected to these recruits?

you don't know either yet you and all your buddies like to keep coming on this board come recruiting season and tell everyone how it went down. Fact, he had two offers, ndsu and Moorhead, not sure what FCS schools you are talking about. Good job, you stole a recruit from Moorhead.

  4. Were you in his house when Mussman visited with him? I even read in the Fargo Forum that he was already leaning towards NDSU before he stated that UND was coming to visit that same week. Do you think maybe it wasn't going to happen so the offer wasn't extended?

I read from the Fargo Forum that Molberg and a RB from Wisconsin committed to ndsu, neither ever happened. Not a good reference.

  5. The kid could probably dress for the Bison tomorrow afternoon with all the injuries. The coaches are obviously confident they can pull it out of him. At this level being cocky and going through the motions don't get you very far no matter what program we are talking about.

    One WR hurt?

  6. You could say the same thing about any player. As far as Muss's recruiting I think the all GWC team says it all.

Nice comeback Danno. There is a common theme with all those players on that team, great players who had great success 4 years in the conference. UND probably didn't have any of those players but some of the kids on our roster now will have just as successful careers by the time they are done at UND. How about the number of Great West championships each team won?

  7. They can have him. I am glad UND decided not to offer. Plus I don't think he had any other choices other than D2.

The kid is a good player but he wasn't UND's highest ranked WR. Things are looking good for the guys they have ranked higher and time will tell if they made the correct decision by not offering. Either way, Woods definately turned some heads with the two playoff games he had.

  8. A majority of our players making plays for us in our best Great West years were young guys. You look at that list and most of those players were All Conference 2 or 3 years. We were lacking those players early on during transition or if we did have them, they were dismissed from the team. I'd take some of the guys we have coming back for a year (or 3) after this year and compare them to some of the players on the list by the time they are seniors and like where we stand. Don't let the fact that we don't have any players on that list get in the way of the amount of talent we have returning. It just took some time for our coaches to build that talent.

One thing this list shows is the Great West was a pretty solid conference in the short time it was around. Some very, very talented players on that list.
  9. Its not pretty but they won again. With his specific skill set he's as good as a lot of other qb's in the league and there is a lot to be said for his "attitude" rubbing off on other players on the team and getting everyone to pull in the same direction. He's won as many games this year as Orton won in 4 years. I've been a Broncos fan for 20+ years as well and wasn't exactly high on him when he took over the job but won't argue with the results.

  10. I believe some of the previously commited recruits were ther for their official visit. Mollberg was there. I think LaBatt was there. Word is UND received commitments over the weekend from " a number" of skill people and a JC nose guard according to a guy who was there.. Don't know names. Sioux have not offered Woods from Bemidji. May mean they got commits from guys they had rated higher but I don't know that for sure, but he hasn't been offered.

    Thanks for the updates Ira.

  11. I would rather play an FBS on the road and take the chance of getting beat than play a DII (non counter) and win. At least with an FBS we get a paycheck. In the eyes of a playoff selection committee the DII game never happened. Our goal every year is to make the playoffs and how our schedule is set up now we are asking our team to win 7 out of 10 games in a new conference vs. schools much more established with their depth. Not easy for any team.

  12. I am not to up on this conference stuff. How would the Boise and San Diego St. changes affect the Big Sky?

They are joining the Big East for football only. Boise St. will more than likely be looking for a home for the rest of its sports. The Big Sky, while maybe a long shot has been mentioned. Won't benefit the conference for football but will be a nice name to have in the conference for other sports if it happened. Probably won't but its worth talking about.

  13. I can't remember which kid (I think it was the runningback from Illinois) that mentioned he is coming for a visit this weekend. Should be a good weekend to bring in recruits. I hope we start to see the recruiting news pick up as we'll have a couple recruiting weekends before X-mas and than a full January.

  14. You have no idea what you are talking about. Kid has been good all year and has great speed and is a great athlete. Played both ways. If I were recruiting him I would tell him what kind of a career Weston Dressler had at UND. He can retrurn punts and kicks and he is very quick. He isn't real tall but has a great verticle.

Don't bother with him Ira he's been trolling for a while.

As far as recruiting California the coaches are still there. Getting into the Big Sky and finally being playoff elgible has given UND and the coaches another recruiting pitch for local recruits. Despite what some fans of other schools would like to think UND's recruiting base will remain ND, MN, WI, SD and Iowa. We've gotten back to getting more and more talent out of these states the last couple of year and this year has started no different. Doing this will allow us to be more selective in some of these other states such as CA, Arizona, Texas, NE, and now apparently Illinois. The coaches are still there recruiting and will continue to pull talent from those states when they need to. We just have to get back to getting some of the local talent first.

  15. I am a Sioux football fan just like mostly everyone that posts on this site. But you have to look at all the games we played and really evaluate how the team looked. Sure we were 8-3. That is a respectable record. But we were a last second field goal against an NAIA/D2 team, a 45 yard field goal late in the 4th quarter against a winless No Colorado team, and a miraculous 3 TD 4th quarter comeback from being 5-6. Now I realize that we were good enough and our team played well enough to get us into the position to win those games, but if you really look at this season can you really say that you can brag about this season? There is much more to look at when evaluating a team then just wins and loses. I agree we are moving in the right direction and I would much rather be 8-3 going into the Big Sky that 3-8. But unless we inprove our play, next year is going to be more like 2010 than 2011.

I don't think anyone can deny that the talent we are putting on the field is getting better and better every year. The cupboard was left pretty bare. It takes some time to rebuild the talent level to compete. Last year, we didn't have it. This year it was much better and we had a lot of youth that had to contribute. Yes, we were inconsistent but that can be blamed on lack of experience as much as on the head coach. All of this is new to Mussman as a head coach as well. When he took the team over, I feel he had to coach to keep games close as the overall talent wasn't there. Now that he is getting the talent, he needs to develop and coach to win. I think we saw him do that towards the end of the year as he gained confidence along with the team. You can look at last year and next year but I judge him on this year and I don't think anyone saw this team finishing 8-3 especially with the injuries the team had. Give the guy a little credit at least.

  16. The title game will be set to make the most money for someone, not to determine a champion.

I agree with this and it will be very interesting to see if the city of New Orleans is going to like home town LSU vs. a one day drive Alabama playing for a national title. I'm guessing they would rather have at least one team, who will travel well and has fans that will stay for the weekend.

  17. He reported on the sports tonight that UND is visiting him this week. That's presumably a home visit? Time for Muss to seal the deal.

I'd imagine NDSU is offering him the chance to start as a freshman since the Wahpeton kid will be the only returning WR with significant playing time. I wonder if Muss will dangle that same opportunity-and I don't mean the obligatory "everyone has a shot to play".

Don't know how he could. With what we have returning at WR, all junior or younger, I don't know if he would help next year. What I would like to see is him redshirt, get some time as a redshirt freshmen and be ready to contribute as a sophmore when McGill and Hardin are done. If he's good enough to play before than, even better. NDSU is a run first offense, always has been and always will be. They have the rb's to do that and get a good one every other year. It will be interesting to see how he fits in there if the report is accurate.

On after watching the MN games this weekend I'm hoping Taylor Grant can work some magic and get Eden Prairie's running back to UND. That kid was a good player and looked like he would be a pretty good college running back at the FCS level, maybe the highest level if he was a little bigger or given the opportunity. Very athletic kid. Minnesota has a lot of talent throughout the state this year.

  18. Home Games:

SD Mines (doesn't matter not DI)

    Central Ark (backed out)

Cal Poly (we lost to them in 2011)

    N. Arizona (haven't played since 1985)

    Montana (tough game)

    SUU (beat UND in 2010)

    Road Games:

San Diego State (expect a loss)

    Sac St (possible win)

Eastern Washington (Could go either way)

    Montana State (Yikes!!)

UNC (we beat them in 2011)

Getting 7 DI wins is going to be extremely tough!! I see possible wins (hard to predict this early) Cal Poly, NAU, SUU, Sac St, UNC and maybe EW. If we can get a Drake or a St. Francis to take Central Arkansas's place we might get to 7....that SD Mines hurts...BAD!!

Agree, we need to fill that Central Arkansas game with a counter and drop the Mines game for a counter. Right now, not including the Central Arkansas game, we have to get 7 wins out of 9 games that count and 1 is a FBS. Thats a tall task to 3 of 5 on the road and sweep at home. I know everyone is working on it but getting this scheduling figured out will help keep the momentum rolling the team brought into the offseason.

  19. is that true about jack micheal? my o my.

also, geaux sioux, I need to inquire about this post of yours "Hendrickson is one of the fastest players on the team and has elite NFL arm strength"

elite NFL arm strength? are you from his hometown, or whats your angle here.

im being legit here, 2012 will be a big sky season and you can expect to be .500 or so every year. Montana's, EWU, Portland will always be good, and the rest will always be bad, and Und should be in the middle.

Thanks for your interest in Fighting Sioux athletics.

  20. Wouldn't surprise me if Mollberg and LaBatt start recruiting Woods. They are all very good BB players and DL plays Bemidji. He had been thinking BB first, I was told that may be changing.

I think that is one of the most underrated parts of getting early verbals. These kids talk to one another and sometimes hearing it from another recruit instead of a coach can be all it takes.

  21. The best OL in Nodak this year committed to Hawii.

I know that but apparently someone else didn't. There are also a couple more out west that are pretty talented. The kid from Kindred is good, he'll probably have a decent college career, but he's not top two players in the state.
