On the WDAZ clip tonight, Jones (as well as Doyle and Little) were very upbeat about team chemistry (how novel!) and seemed optimistic about a 20-win season. Maybe there is hope.

Has this issue been hurting Bruce Smith's chances?

If CSU-Fullerton's President is behind it maybe it has a chance. But typically, the commuter make-up of most Southern California universities don't generate much school loyalty. Alumni of UC-Davis and Cal Poly, which are more traditional campuses, seem to have much more loyalty toward their schools. If the lack of a NFL team doesn't seem to concern Los Angeles and Orange County citizens, why would they support a IAA or low IA team?. Even USC and UCLA don't really draw all that well. Every few years, a petition drive starts at these schools but sputters. 2001: UC-Santa Barbara Faces Several Obstacles in Path Toward Reinstating Football Santa Barbara is probably one of the wealthiest areas in the country: but apathetic toward football. UCSB now uses their on-campus football stadium for their nationally prominent soccer teams. [url=http://www.newuniversity.org/showArticle.php?id=4841]2006: The History of UC Irvine

With the ND HS football season over, who has UND been recruiting? Here's some names that have been tossed around as prime ND recruits: Jared McGowan RB GFC Karl Effertz TE/WR Century Josh Horner RB F South Alex Hooey LB F South Ian McGurran OL - 6'5" F North Mitch Haugeberg OL - 6'3" Minot Jim Green OL - 6'5" Wahpeton Ben Kringstad DL B Century Dillan Ostrom WR 6'4" Finley-Sharon Lance Johansen RB Lakota Seth Nichols QB 6'5" Dakota Prairie Any other names? How about on the Minnesota side?

Kupchella's endorsement went to Weisenstein, so it makes sense that Kupchella would place Weisenstein as chair. Doubt his chairmanship will have more than a marginal effect on the Presidential selection process, and could really cause Weisenstein PR problems if Bollinger doesn't get significant attention.

The news from Missoula just seem to be getting worse. Perhaps this is the only IAA job that could tempt Lennon. Griz arrests tied to drug-related robbery

IMHO, the UND football program need periodic games within Minnesota for recruiting purposes (both for athletes and students). With no NCC and no Gopher games for the near future, a "bowl" game becomes an option. Rather impresssed with USD's schedule, so far, especially UNI and MSU. Thought UND would have both those teams on its schedule, but apparent UND will have neither. Since SUU will be coming to the Alerus in 2008, doubt they would also go to Vermillion. Also, Cal Poly wouldn't travel to Vermillion until 2009 (just like UC-Davis won't travel to UND til 2009). Seems like only Rolla and WTAMU are sure home games for USD (SE La might be possible). UND Cal Poly Southern Utah Missouri-Rolla Montana St UNI SE Louisiana WTAMU

Another sad day in Montana: Three Montana players arrested Sporting News - Montana Players arrested One wonders if Hauck can survive this.

Bottom line: can any loss really be put a the feet of the defense? With the UNO loss this year, the UND offense left points on the board and didn't convert 4th-down situations. Statistically, and probably a surprise to many, UND's defense leads the NCC in most major categories: http://www.northcentralconference.org/spor...ts/confldrs.htm UND's defense isn't as strong in the red zone and doesn't get the turnovers like they have in the past. This year UNO's defense is dominant is in rushing defense and turnover margin, where UND has traditionally been strong. Rather than coaching, it just seems UND doesn't have the athleticism at the DL and LB positions (who are still young) or the rest of the league (especially UNO and CWU) made considerable upgrades.

Oops, read the posting date as "2007". But nevertheless, Lennon himself, during the Great West acceptance video three months ago, hoped to have the 2008 schedule would be issued "very shortly". Highly doubt he would have stated that unless the majority of the 2008 schedule was already firm.
-
In 2008 so to minimize non-counters, Cal Poly plays USD (but not UND), while UC-Davis only plays UND. In August, Lennon was quoted as "nine" games have been scheduled. The AFCA site seems to confirm this, as UND is only listing three open dates in 2008: Aug 28-30, Sept 6, and Oct 18.

With the rate football announcements are going, IAA's ranks could be devastated in a few years. Starting football and going to IA level: UT-San Antonio South Alabama Discussing starting football, possibly at IA level: Georgia State Kennesaw State Charlotte North Florida IAA to IA moves announced (2011) Texas State Jacksonville St University goals to be at IA football: Cal Poly Sacramento State Portland State Public discussions by University officials on IA football/conference changes: UMass Illinois State S Illinois Missouri State Ga Southern Appalachian State Liberty James Madison Delaware St Current potential for IA: Delaware Montana Montana St NDSU Youngstown St North Dakota Other possible: Old Dominion (starting in IAA) Albany (ramping up scholarships)

Another school likely moving up to IA football. South Alabama doesn't field a team yet, but, with its existing membership in the Sunbelt, has a ready-made conference. South Alabama (USA) Football would break even

Actually, it is possible. Doesn't appear that Provost Muir and Montana's President Dennison got along well ... http://chronicle.com/news/article/161/mont...ves-the-provost

With UND as a 4th seed (due to either a CWU win over UNO or a UND loss to USD), the likely opponent would be Ashland. The attendance for that wouldn't be too great either. With UNO playing at CWU, CWU seems to have a reasonable shot at an upset.

Toxic, interesting. The proprietor of Bisonville, Tony (a.k.a. Flatlander) has been deriding UND as "toxic" on other websites, including non-smack forums on of all places northdakotapreps.com. I quess what goes around, comes around. -

Central Michigan only has the approval of one Michigan Chippewa Tribe, the Saginaw Chippewa of Mount Pleasant. Some of the other Chippewa/Ojibwe tribes in Michigan do not approve of CMU's name, based on media reports. There remains an inconsistency in the NCAA policy which determines what state tribes and how many (one or more) are required to approve the name. Although the lawsuit addressed this, the UND/NCAA settlement didn't. Technically there are three Sioux reservations in ND, as a portion of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux reservation is in ND.

Perhaps why Schafer took his name out of the UND Presidency's hat (after Johanns resigned last month): Bush nominates Schafer as new Ag secretary

British Columbia appears to be making plans to join DII (rather than DI) and play up in two sports, then later move to DI. Had wondered how UBC was going to deal with the DI moratorium, but technically, they still need an exemption to bypass the moratorium on the single-sport move-ups. With DII not sponsoring men's volleyball or women's hockey, UBC (without the moratorium) could move four teams up (M&W Hockey, M&W volleyball). UBC poised for NCAA application Thunderbirds Eyeing NCAA membership Hockey, volleyball at top of the list
