    new coach?

If Tibesar has sincere interest, we'd be absolute fools not to talk with him.

    new coach?

It almost has to be Bubba, so that SIU can implement the 3-4 defense quickly. So now, UND, UMD, SCSU, and Mankato will all simultaneously be without head coaches.

    UND or SIU

From an attendance standpoint, there's really been no significant differences between the schools: SIU Avg Attendance 2007 9950 2006 9508 2005 9581 2004 9712 UND Avg Attendance 2007 9887 2006 8827 2005 9426 2004 9389 Both schools attendances have been hurt by poorly attended first-round playoff games. (For example, this year, SIU's first round game against Eastern Illinois only drew 6124, while the second round game against UMass drew just 6560. Our first round game against Winona drew 5370.)

    UND or SIU

If Lennon was offered $200k from Southern Illinois, it would be difficult to justify based on the income from UND football, especially when compared to Hakstol's salary and UND's hockey income. Southern Illinois' basketball provides a lot of income (via NCAA payments from NCAA basketball wins) that subsidizes the football program. ' Southern Illinois rewards basketball coach with extension With SIU being a basketball school, SIU's basketball coach Lowery makes $750/yr. Lennon's salary is less than 1/3rd of that. It wouldn't be justifiable to pay Lennon $200 k/yr, when Hakstol isn't making all that much more with a program that brings in a great amount of $'s. UND football is not a money-maker (yet).

    Lennon gone

The base salary is $100k, but there are bonuses for student GPA, graduation rates, NCC championships, playoff wins, NCAA championships, etc. He also benefits from summer camps and possibly the coaches show. If Lennon did indeed sign for $200 k/ annually, he'd be one of the the highest paid coaches in IAA. NDSU's Bohl reportedly makes $147 K now. This Bisonzone reports that SIU's Coach Kill made only $96 K in 2003 (which was about average for IAA in 2005), with two raises to $165 k by 2006. The costs of IAA coaches seem to be escalating rapidly.

But Lennon leaves with 3 more years to go?

    new coach?

Walrus: In your humble opinion, why did Lennon leave?

    Lennon gone

Imagine Lennon with a program that not only can recruit Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, but add his contacts in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. He's competitive and wants championships, and that is impossible for four years at UND. With his age and with success at SUI, he still has potential for a BCS type job as a next stop. The limited resources at Sac State and the personnl/recruiting issues at Montana State were much higher risk positions. The worst issue is the timing with recruiting; it would have been better for the program if he had left for Montana State.

    Lennon gone

One of the true tests of leadership is if the leader has trained up a replacement that can lead the program to greater heights. RT passed this test. Blais gave his blessing to Hakstol. Who does Lennon see as his heir apparent?

    new coach?

My thoughts exactly. Perhaps they could just use the results of the last search and the runner-up, Hedberg, as the coach. He's available. A decision needs to be made quickly, because Mussman may choose Mankato if he doesn't have assurance that he will be on a future UND staff. The effects on recruiting may really be harmful.
  13. In a Bozeman podcast last week, there was an extensive interview with Fullerton on past and future Big Sky expansions. From Fullerton himself, UND was included within the Big Sky expansion discussions when NDSU and SDSU were being considered. Big Sky Expansion with Doug Fullerton Bobcatnation thread Highlights: Still interested in expansion, but can't find a right fit right now. "If I haven't heard from some one and we're interested, I will give them a call." Main reasons for Northern Colorado expansion: Academic fit is very important - certain schools academic missions can not get beyond first hurdle (Southern Utah?). Second thing is geography. Minimum number for men's basketball is seven, eight is a little short, most conferences are moving to nine and ten. Past expansions: Q: Has there been any talk of North Dakota and South Dakota coming in? They (Big Sky Presidents) still are interested in expansion. Nine is an ugly number as far as basketball. Ten or twelve would be better. Ten you would stay in one division. Twelve you would get two divisions.
  14. Southern Illinois' former coach, Kill, was in the running for the Montana State job until he dropped out later. Now, Kill goes to Northern Illinois. If Kill couldn't be tempted to go to Montana State, and Lennon declined Montana State, why would Lennon choose to Southern Illinois over Montana State? Southern Illinois is in major need of a facility upgrade for football (it needs a new football stadium) and it's a basketball school. That said, the Gateway autobid, a strong program, and a good recruiting base make SIU a good job. When is UND's indoor practice facility going to be announced?
  15. Sioux City Journal: Tracy verbally commits to play football at North Dakota
  16. No doubt Rich had many strengths: tactical coaching strategy didn't seem to be one of them. Gunther arguably accomplished more with less talent (although his recruiting ability and style seemed to fade) while simultaneously playing higher level schools. Around 70 or 80 current DI schools were DII in the 70's and 80's, including playoff opponents of UND like Wisc-Green Bay, N Iowa, Old Dominion, Tenn-Chattanooga. Gunther's win total was not peppered with nearly as many NAIA or DAC teams.
  17. The ironic thing is, Standing Rock and other tribal leadership became indoctrinated by the victim mentality education many of them received at UND. Florida State never had any Indian programs to fill the Seminoles with propaganda. Edit: Also should add that the poisoning political effects of tribal/mainstream rifts on South Dakota Sioux reservations in the last 40 years (i.e. Wounded Knee, Black Hills litigation, etc) have had to have much more of a spillover effect on Standing Rock than on Spirit Lake. By comparison, the current generation of Seminoles does not have such memories.

  19. The second proposed ramp appears to be smaller than the west Columbia, so the costs could be lower. With the soccer/track taking up a large amount of parking space, the ramps would have to be fully utilized (and parking fees could go up). From 2005:
  20. What was sad was the state of a perenially underacheiving program that Glas left. It became more and more clear that McDermott was a major part of the Sioux success in the early 90's (as well as, of course, talent like Guldseth's). Glas would have never lasted as long as he did without those glory years. Jones going to the Princeton offense could be just the prescription for the Sioux. Disciplined players from Minnesota and Canada may very well have an interest in that type system. As far as scheduling, look for these teams: Seattle Utah Valley State Cal St- Bakersfield Houston Baptist Texas-Pan Am South Dakota
  21. The Master Plan addresses track, football, and women's soccer more than adequately. The indoor facility would also allow training areas for baseball, softball, and golf. But what about actual venues for competitive baseball, softball, and tennis? Could the indoor facility host softball games? With the recent signing of a very driven coach and a number of out-state softball recruits, it seems softball is getting rather high emphasis. Baseball, on the other hand, hasn't announced any signings.
  22. Bemidji St's schedule shows the game on Dec 29th at 7PM in Minneapolis.
