  1. The unintended consequences of this are going to be far more reaching than nickname opponents realize: the Sioux logo has become a state icon and will become the main identifier of ND throughout the nation. The ramifications culturally are almost as significant as what happened economically in Wisconsin yesterday. The Spirit of the Spirit Lake people prevailed today. Justice has and will continue to prevail.
  2. Is a BB game at Hyslop even possible anymore? Haven't all the bleachers been gutted to make it a baseball/track practice facility?
  3. Both the Senate and the House votes show enough support to override any Governor veto. The Bill will become law. There may be constitutional questions, but who will have standing to bring those issues to court?
  4. I'm impressed by dedication, Wyo! (highly doubt I'd attend an NDSU women's game under the same circumstances)
  5. Wiki link: GFAFB had 10,474 people in 1970 (making it the 9th largest city in ND at the time) It may have been even larger in the 60's.
  6. I'd like to know where UND would host any Big Sky championship: at the Betty, at the Alerus, or at the Ralph (with a weekend WCHA series upcoming). With an NCAA bid on the line, would have to believe that such a game would be the hottest men's ticket the city would experience since maybe the 60's.
  7. Northern Colorado was always more or less a cellar dweller in the NCC, and until their current senior class was recruited, it looked like it would continue that tradition. Northern Colorado men's basketball progression: Yr Conf Overall 02-03 3-13 11-15 (Final year in NCC) 03-04 NA 6-23 (DI transition schedule began) 04-05 NA 8-21 05-06 NA 4-27 06-07 2-14 4-26 (Big Sky schedule) 07-08 6-10 13-16 08-09 8-8 14-18 09-10 12-4 25-8 10-11 13.-3 21-10
  8. As reported in an earlier thread, Mathison and Stockdale are walk ons.
  9. When UND separates itself from the rest of the Dakota schools and goes down it's own path (i.e. hockey, to a much lesser extent swimming), it seems to do well for itself. You and some other Yote fans seem to be able to grasp the potential. NDSU and SDSU fans are too emotionally invested in the Summit, so their brain can't process the potential of what the Big Sky offers.
  10. No question Douple's a used car salesman/ douche as he is an admitted liar and deceiver. But after all the years of hearing NDSU fans (and even SDSU) fans say they have moved on, yet they are still infatuated with every move UND makes. UND won't be joining any Summit League or MVFC. UND has now differentiated itself from all the other Dakota schools in athletic affiliation. Why would we ever give that up? In the Big Sky, UND is it's Gateway to the midwest. In the Summit, UND would be the last stop on I-29 north in a league that so struggles with it's own identity that it changes it's own name that only adds to it's self-delusions and public anonymity. As far as the MVFC adding UNO, that is only possible if the MVFC lost a team or went to 12. Contrary to some of the garbage on message boards about Youngstown St going to the CAA: that's such a piece of garbage. CAA schools barf at the thought of Youngstown's academics. The CAA just rejected Charlotte as a football member: the idea of Youngstown going to the CAA is one of the most incredibly stupid rumors that message boards have ever spread. The only way Youngstown finds another league is if some of the northern CAA schools split off (Maine, UNH) and start a more regional nothern league with Stony Brook, Albany, Fordham, C Conn St - and hold their nose by taking Youngstown just to fill out the schedule. If UNO is being added to the Summit, it is only with only DII school (GVSU, SCSU, or UMD).
  11. CNN: Billions of barrels of untapped oil From 5000 ND oil jobs in 2005 to 100,000 ND oil jobs later this decade? Harold Hamm seems to believe that: ND could almost certainly pass 700,000 people for the first time in its history, and might hit 1,000,000 people later in the decade if the 100,000 oil jobs becomes reality.
  12. The animal Mount Rushmore of NDSU: a cow (Marguerite), a horse's ass (Chapman), a donkey (Hager), and a kind of dog (Ruley), with sheep (fans) baa-ing in applause.
  13. Not really that many people, even in North Dakota, get it (the Bakken) yet. The ramp-up is really only starting. OIl would have to drop by 50% to stop it. Yesterday, Brigham Exploration announced that four wells/section would more or less be standard for most of their leases, which almost doubles their earlier drilling estimates (and doubles their eventual production). Brigham is also reviewing 11 other formations - above, below and in between the Bakken and Sanish-Three Forks - for economic production feasibility. So when all is said and done, there may not just be 4 horizontal wells / section, but perhaps 8, 12, 16 or even more. By late 2013, the pipeline companies are targeting 1.3 million barrels/day takeaway capacity from the state to keep up with production: that's a three fold increase. By 2015, there may be a need to even double that. There's also increasing activity around Dickinson, NE Montana, Divide/Burke and even Bottineau Counties. Williston may easily need to triple in population in a decade just to keep accommodate all the activity going on. Minot could grow by 50%, while a lot of the smaller communities (Stanley, Tioga, Ray, New Town, Watford City, Belfied, Killdeer) may be more like the size of Devils Lake.
  14. Link: NDHSAA tournament sites for 2010-2015 As stated, Grand Forks loses the state hockey tournament in 2014, but gains the State Class B Basketball in 2012 and 2014. Not sure if that tournament will be at the Alerus or at Engelstad.
  15. The Alerus can be configured for other UND sports, like softball, indoor track, tennis, soccer (with the new turf), volleyball, and basketball (and even hockey - if it had the cooling coils), as one side of the stands are portable. However, baseball would have one outfield that would make bloop singles home runs, as well as as low roof. Maybe if they installed a giant left field wall a la Fenway Park, it could actually work for baseball. I'd really like UND to start lacrosse and play in the Alerus. Perfect facility for the sport. We could play Rutgers, too.
  16. The East/West regions have been relatively recent. In the 70's and 80's, the regions were North / South, so the west rarely had teams in state. Minot and Bismarck didn't even sponsor teams until the mid-70's. The east/west setup was made to help western ND hockey progress, but it arguably be better for western hockey development if they went back to North/South regions. Hockey at the HS level is most often determined by the organization and numbers at the youth level. The two schools to watch out for in the future are West Fargo and Fargo Davies as well as the Bismarcks (who, if they played in the EDC, would be much better prepared).

  19. Bison Dan: I actually thought of your postings when seeing this quote in the news:
  20. The underlying issue is that the legislature is still torqued at the incompetence shown by the SBoHE and certain school's administrations, especially on a presidential house at a certain Ag college. Incompetence and corruption has effects, and sadly, they impact everyone.
  21. If there is a veto that is sustained, there will be an initiative brought forth with 12,000+ signatures. Bank on it! The initiative would win both in ND and on Standing Rock. With a vote on Standing Rock, the NCAA wouldn't have a leg to stand on. The people are now in control of this issue - not the politicians, not the academics. The spirit of the people of Spirit Lake will prevail.
  22. The veto can be overridden with 2/3rd vote in both chambers. House vote: 65 votes for: 62 R, 3 D 28 votes against: 6 R, 22 D 1 absent (1 R)
