House Bill to Save the Sioux Passes 65 to 28.
star2city replied to The Whistler's topic in UND Nickname
Or perhaps Kelley has already talked with all the Summit League Presidents, but didn't talk with the Summit League Commissioner. Kelley has already indicted himself in this area when he spoke about fearing for conference affiliation if the nickname wasn't dropped. Then Douple first saying it was a huge issue, but later amending his story to confess that he was lying: the nickname wasn't an issue but a contrived story. IF the Sioux nickname was ever truly a "big" issue among University Presidents, the Big Sky never would have accepted UND without another nickname already in place. -
I believe those would be the leaders for all DI women's hockey. The eastern schools just don't attract many fans. (BC under 200, Mercyhurst under 350). Wisconsin had an actual crowd from a major promotion of 10,668 in a game vs Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. That was a single game record for women's hockey ever in the US. Wisconsin's record single game crowd for women's hockey

Can't disagree more. UND and North Dakota may very well be looked at as rebellious from academic ivory towers and from the NCAA Indianapolis headquarters, but the NCAA itself is loved by no one. If anything, the Fighting Sioux name becomes even more valuable and the story even more compelling and heroic. In the South and in the West, if the average fan knew the full story of the nickname controversy, they would be buying Sioux jerseys tomorrow as a show of solidarity. -

Statuatory limitations: indicates the nickname is fair game. Since Stenehjem worked closely with the SBoHE and the NCAA, I highly doubt he wants their "effort" to go down in vain. So publicly, Stenehjem feels compelled to protect the SBoHE from embarrassment. It's politics and playing to the media. -

Looks like UND finished 2nd in regular season attendance, with Wisconsin winning by a wide margin. Avg Attendance: UW 2935 UND 1338 UMD 874 UMn 871 If Duluth had played in Amsoil Arena the entire year, they probably would have finished above UND.

On a referendum (at Standing Rock and statewide), was this the post? Statewide Referendum With the 65-28 vote, the measure is veto-proof in the House, should Dalrymple decide to veto the bill. The vote was also almost down straight partisan lines, so contrary to what the moderators want discussed on this forum, the keep-the-nickname alive forces are Republican almost without exception. Since the Republicans dominate the Senate, 35-12, it is hard to imagine this bill not becoming law regardless of whether Dalrymple signs it. -

The NCAA hasn't kicked out any of the South Carolina schools for having a state flag that the NCAA considers racially insensitive - even though the South Carolina legislature gave the finger to the NCAA. The NCAA never kicked SMU out over wholesale cheating. Nor has the NCAA kicked out certain schools, like Portland State or Eastern Washington or Idaho State, for horrible APRs. Tennessee hasn't been threatened by the NCAA, even though the Volunteer football team has practically threatened the entire city of Knoxville with violence. The NCAA is just a bully organization that cowers at the thought that real political forces will get involved with it. In this time of tea party activism at many levels, the NCAA will tread lightly. The political climate has totally changed from when the NCAA first made the nickname an issue.

I'll readily admit that I haven't been a recent watcher of Summit basketball, even if one could find them on TV. But physicality of players does not equal defensive ability. In a football or rugby match between UND men's basketball and Summit teams, I don't think the UND freshmen would stand a chance in the next three years.
-
This is probably a gross oversimplification, but the Summit League seems geared toward more physical play (like the Big 10), while the Big Sky seems more geared toward finesse (like the Pac10). UND's recruits fit much more with the Big Sky finesse game, even though they were supposedly recruited for the Summit. Football has the same pattern, too, with the midwest leagues physical, but the western leagues more agile and quick. The one midwest basketball league that seems to break the mold of the Big 10 physicality is the Horizon League, with Butler and Cleveland St.

In many respects, if the Bison had guards like Webb, Schuler, and Anderson, they would be more successful, as their guard play is lacking. NDSU's strength seems geared toward physical play in the middle, which UND couldn't handle until Brekke came into the picture. Although La Tech neutralized Brekke's scoring and rebounding, the reverse was also true - as La Tech's inside game was not dominant.

La Tech vs UND - College Division Tournament - 1967 UND release:

If the UND athletic department really wanted a better schedule, they would have waited until at least April to release the schedule. There are likely many issues (cost, Buning's previous deals), but the biggest one is that this team - with it's inexperienced QBs - needs some scrimmages to gain QB confidence and experiment. All of next season is essentially practice for 2012.

This next stretch of five games - which includes two out-of-conference and three road conference - basically makes or breaks the season: @ NJIT @Chicago St La Tech @ UVU @ N Col The top upper tier Great West teams on the road, one WAC opponent at home, and the leader of the Big Sky on the road.

Thanks! Now, we just need to send some emails: Legislators emails / addresses To facilitate reconciliation, what should also be proposed is that UND have two nicknames - one Sioux and one something else. Those that take offense by the Sioux nickname can wear the alternate jersey or T-shirt. Auburn, while technically not having two nicknames, is prominently known for both "War Eagle" and "Tigers", and it hasn't hurt them.

Here's a link: Alerus Center History An 80's vote for a downtown arena was defeated. An early 90's vote for a site near Columbia Mall was defeated. Both of those sites had detractors (some hated downtown, north sider's wouldn't vote for south side.) The 42nd St location was viewed as a good compromise, with visibility and access to I29.

If the Canad Inn, water park, and entertainment center had not been built, think of how large the deficits would have been! Until the hotel was built, the convention business was poor. To make the Alerus more successful requires more "activities" to be around around it. IMHO, it would have made tremendous sense to build the new wellness center there as well as a new library. Adding those type amenities around it makes the Alerus even more attractive to restaurants, making the Alerus more attractive to conventions, which in turn make it more attractive to hotels, which in turn make it more attractive to concerts. In Regina, Saskatchewan, the is talk a building a retractable roof stadium. But the economics just don't make sense, unless the project is even "bigger": Think bigger on Regina Dome plan Cities rarely ever have truly profitable stadiums or arenas (when the capital cost is included). However, if the plan includes area development that encompasses much more than the stadium, the net increase in taxable values and taxes can result in much higher benefits.

Some very good postings today. Instead of the legislature passing the bills that have been proposed, which would have some potentially very negative effects on the NCAA-UND relationship, I'd like the legislature to go down another path: - Place the Sioux name as the perpetual nickname of UND on the ballot, so all ND voters have a say. - Since Sioux County is essentially the Standing Rock reservation, the votes of Sioux County would be a de facto Standing Rock vote. - If the vote in both Sioux County and North Dakota affirms the nickname, the AG would be required to petition the NCAA for the reinstatement of the Fighting Sioux name, as all requirements of the NCAA would then have been met. The NCAA would have to fold based on this type of democratic action. If the legislature doesn't impose a statewide vote, the same measure could be put in place by gaining voters signature for an initiative. If the principles of our representative democracy are properly used, the tyranny of PC politics can and will be defeated.
