Whether Maine is prepared or not, getting at least one win out there would be a pretty good start for the Sioux. Although I hope it happens, I believe a UND sweep is very unlikely!

Parise and Hale Devils' minor-league affiliate hopes for a rise in attendance Published in the Asbury Park Press 10/06/04 By MIKE KERWICK STAFF WRITER WEST ORANGE -- Elmer Fudd, the Looney Tunes character who sits atop Scott Stevens' locker, was still there keeping a set of eyes on the locker room. But the nameplate that marks Stevens' territory was replaced by the name Pascal Rheaume. One stall down, the spot where Martin Brodeur usually holds court with reporters after practices, there was no indication the two-time Vezina winner had popped by anytime recently. His nameplate had vanished too. Scott Clemmensen, a young man who backed up Brodeur late last season, found his name above a legend's locker. While Stevens, Brodeur and the rest of the Devils sit tight during a National Hockey League lockout that shows few signs of ending, Rheaume, Clemmensen and the Albany River Rats are prepping for the start of their season. For two weeks now, Albany, New Jersey's American Hockey League affiliate, has been down in Jersey for training camp. The River Rats will wrap up today and head back north. Albany coach Robbie Ftorek, a guy Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello brought back to the organization last season to resuscitate a last-place team, thinks his building will see a spike in attendance. "In '95 people came out because we were the only game in town and because we had a good team," Ftorek said. He has some guys worth watching. There's David Hale, the 23-year-old defenseman who played 65 games for the Devils last season. There's Rheaume, the journeyman NHL center who suited up for New Jersey's 2003 Stanley Cup championship squad. And there's Zach Parise, the phenom, the kid New Jersey is hoping will be the league's next big star. "The fans at Albany are going to love him," Ftorek said. Parise played college hockey at the University of North Dakota but really made his mark playing in the World Junior Championships last winter. He was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament, leading Team USA to the gold medal. Had the lockout been avoided, you might have seen the 20-year-old Parise playing on a line with Jeff Friesen and Jamie Langenbrunner this winter. "It's always a 'what if,' " Parise said. But the NHL and AHL are different animals. In yesterday's preseason meeting between the River Rats and Philadelphia Phantoms at South Mountain Arena, four fights broke out within the game's first six minutes. Parise tried to shrug off the notion that some AHL thug might take a run at him to make a name for himself. "I'll keep the flies off his back," promised Rob Skrlac, Albany's veteran enforcer. As for Hale, he tried to put a positive spin on spending the season in the AHL after making the Devils out of training camp last autumn. "It's another year of experience in a professional league," Hale said. "I'm happy to be playing hockey," he added. Ftorek said he wouldn't be surprised to see fans from New Jersey making the drive up for some weekend games. Upstate New York's NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres, will also be on hiatus, leaving more fans scrambling for something to follow. "Our club's going to be a good team," Ftorek said.

At Meet the Sioux last night Jordan Parise said that he hadn't yet noticed any difference in the ice.

Dagies, Spirko was not using a wood stick last Saturday. Although I can't say for sure, I am in agreement with jloos that it is likely Greene based on comments MG has made in past interviews with regard to wood sticks.

Article from Sunday, October 3, 2004, Portland Press Herald: Black Bears hit ice running By JENN MENENDEZ, Portland Press Herald Writer PLAYERS TO WATCH Jimmy Howard Goalie, junior Howard emerged as an elite goaltender during the postseason last year. He set Hockey East and NCAA records and allowed two or fewer goals in 20 of 22 starts. In his first year as a No. 1 goalie, Howard is projected as a Hobey Baker candidate. Michel Leveille Forward, sophomore Leveille, a Quebec-born playmaking forward, had 34 assists in 43 games as a freshman last season. He is being eyed for his set-up passes but also for his potential to score. If Leveille has the breakout year some are hoping for, he could be a dangerous weapon. Jeff Mushaluk Defenseman, senior Mushaluk leads a corps of seven returning defensemen. As one of Maine's captains, he will be looked to for leadership on and off the ice. John Ronan Forward, senior Ronan will be an integral part of Maine's offense by committee. He'll also be looked to for his leadership on and off the ice as one of Maine's captains. I am assuming BL won't be playing for Lincoln before the HS season as they had a game last night and he was at REA watching the Sioux beat the Bison.

We will likely have to rely on comments and updates from jloos since his cousin will be a Spud again this season.

Not unlike the Gophers from a few years back who were so desperate for a national championship that they recruited out of state (see: Potulny, Vanek, etal.) -

They did - last season anyway. My son is two and I took him to several games last season and they just waived him through the gate with no ticket or lap ticket. Hopefully, it will work the same again this season. Has anybody heard differently?

Sprig, Have you got the Badgers on your mind?

According to UND's schedule they play BC on October 30th and Northeastern on October 29th. Hopefully, it will be the Sioux/BC game that will be shown that weekend.

I think Gopher fans should be more concerned with how their team will fare this season rather than how UND will be in the year's ahead. It seemed that DH did a pretty good job convincing past recruits before DB hooked them. I am not too concerned at this point!

Is this how you are going to address your fellow students during your campaign for Student Body President? If so, I have a feeling you will a real difficult time winning the election.

Kermit, I was at the game and agree with your assessment. I was very impressed with Okposo - he is the real deal. Although Chorney seemed to play a lot the first period, he didn't seem to get as much icetime the last two periods, however, he is a very fluid skater and strong on his skates. It appeared that SSM was definitely giving all their players a chance to play in different situations. I thought Gergen was one of the top couple of players on the ice. He recently committed to Duluth and seems to fit the Sandelin mold - speedy, skilled and very gritty. Esposito at one point was ranked the #1 '89 recruit in North America, if I am not mistaken. He is young, but very good. IMO, he had the prettiest goal of the night when he raced up the right wing and blew past the dman before schooling the Fargo goalie. Also, #22, Deeth, I believe, is a Notre Dame recruit. He played on a line with Okposo and Genoway and was fun to watch. He is a little pest. It was fun watching Toews play and noticed that the Jets payed him special attention and stayed in his face all game. I am not sure if that is because he is highly skilled, because of his style of play or because he was talking some trash - perhaps all three, but he certainly saw his share of lumber. Of note: SSM's goaltending was atrocious last night. I doubt that happens often, but neither goalie (they split time) had a good game. They were out of position, often slow to react and let in several shots that probably shouldn't go in at any level.

One clarification: Mike Possin actually transferred to St. John's of the MIAC, which is near his hometown of St. Cloud, and had a fairly successful college career at that level: SJU's Possin Named Hockey All-American COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Saint John's University senior forward Mike Possin, St. Cloud/Cathedral HS, was named to the 2001-02 JOFA/AHCA College Division All-American Team, which was announced on Thursday, March 14. Possin, along with sophomore goalie Dan Melde of Gustavus and Tony Lawrence of St. Thomas, were the three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players named to the West Region First Team. Possin, an assistant captain for the Johnnies, started 25 of 26 games this season. Possin has 15 goals and 28 assists for 43 points, which led the team in assists and points. Possin led the MIAC this season in assists with 18 and tied for the lead in points with 28. Possin, who transferred to SJU last winter from the Univ. of North Dakota, had 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points in 44 career games at SJU. Possin is the seventh SJU player in school history, and first since Matt Erredge in 1999, to earn All-America honors.

I read a few articles today about NHLers' still skating with their alma maters due to the lockout. I was just curious if anyone had heard of any former Sioux that play in NHL still skating in GF with this year's team?
-
Wait a second - and no offense, but your post doesn't make any sense. Is it his job to lose or will he not get a sniff of playing time? It cannot possibly be both. If DH is going to go with Lammy, then it isn't JB's spot to lose. In my opinion, if Lammy is as good as advertised he will get some pt, but so will the other guys. This will be a great year to break in a rookie because UND's solid defense should help ease the transition, but I highly doubt that Brandt will be put on the shelf.

Actually, I think the incoming guys are pretty good and that is why they made the list!
