Top overachiever and Underachiever of all time

The guy that scored 172 career points? -
With regard to my attendance, fights or no fights - I couldn't care less, I am going to the games regardless, but PCM's statement with regard to fight proponents, cited below, succinctly summarizes my feelings on the issue:

Top overachiever and Underachiever of all time

Overachievers not mentioned: Phil Sykes and Craig Ludwig - both being walk-ons! Greg Johnson (in a sense and in addition to being a great player) for being a Hobey Baker runner-up on a 12-25-1 team that only scored 138 goals in 38 games. Underachiever: Landon Wilson; Jason Herter (postgraduate underachiever) up until he played his ONE NHL game, he was the highest draft pick in the history of the league to not make it to the NHL. -

I know Defauw was a solid recruit coming in because of his all-around athletic ability and although he didn't have a big college career point-wise, I wouldn't label him an underachiever. I was at his first official practice as a member of the Sioux. At the start of the practice I had no idea who he was - except for a small number on the back of his helmet, there was no other way to identify the players - but I was shocked at how poorly he skated. He literally appeared to have difficulty simply standing on skates. I remember saying to myself that he, whomever he was, didn't stand a chance at making the club and would be an early cut. I later learned that the awful skater was Defauw and watched as he skated a regular shift on two national championship teams and earned a stint with Carolina in the NHL. Those are three pretty big achievements for someone who looked terribly out of place and overmatched at the start of his college career. -
As suspected, even the most level-headed of Gopher fans puts the typical Vanek spin on it. Sagard, you have to admit for all the smack-talking that goes on down in Gopherland (yes, Sioux fans do their share, too), the reference to UMD only is pretty funny.

If he recovers from his concussion that occurred last week against Mankato, which Lucia immediately blamed on UND's style of play!

Why rip away? What you say makes a lot of sense and I agree that there are other ways to move people from in front of the net, but the truth of the matter is the player camped out in front of net has been getting worked over by the opponents' d-man's stick for years. This isn't new to college hockey or new to MG. The big 'problem' is MG's strength. If Foyt or Bina or Radke hit someone with their stick, no matter how solid those three may be on their skates, it may move the opponent, but likely won't knock them off their skates. When MG does it the player gets pummeled onto the ice. Those type of penalties have been called for years and that doesn't bother me (I would rather see that type of penalty earned rather than a forward caught behind the play snagging someone's jersey with a stick to slow them down or grabbing the opponent to hold them up - that better fits the definition of lazy), but they are certainly magnified this year because of the concentration on obstruction hooking, holding and slashing.

I love the first question: The only MN school specifically mentioned is UMD - how funny is that? One more thing for Gopher fans to stew about!

Janet Jones perhaps?

Good point. I have an old friend who served as a linesman in the WCHA for a few years. His personal philosophy was that for the meager salary he was making per game he wasn't going to jump in alone and stop a fight for fear of getting hit with a punch or ending up injured. And he did play hockey. In fact, he won a championship in the early 80's as a member of the Sioux so I will take his word for it.

Here we go again. I guess you had/have to play hockey to talk hockey. I think this was your response last season everytime someone said something you didn't agree with. I was sitting in the front row behind the net where it happened. Was it a penalty - according to Anderson it was. I also thought it was good, physical play. The earlier question, in part, was, do Greene's problems come from being physical and the answer is yes, in part, in my opinion. I have no problem with that type of penalty - it is going to happen . . . when Greene gets the holding and obsturction penalties then there is a problem.

Keep in mind those same 'poor sportsmen' that cheered from the bench as McMahon busted up Vanelli's nose were the EXACT same players that stood in line after the BC game six days later to shake hands with York and congratulate him on his 700th victory - those young men are anything but poor sports, in my opinion. By the way, I hope UND falls behind to CC this weekend (tongue in cheek) so they get really fired up. There is no better way to light a fire under a team than have them be down four or five goals! I know I hope for a goal deficit every game as a fan - that really gets me going. And football players don't need to fight. They get to beat the h*ll out of each other on every play and it is usually always legal.

From today's Fargo Forum: Moorhead's Chris VandeVelde (UND 2006), Matt Becker and Jon Ammerman have been chosen to play for the Minnesota Fighting Saints, one of two all-star teams chosen from participants in the Upper Midwest Elite High School League, in this weekend's National Invitational Tournament in New Hope. The event includes some of the top midget hockey teams in North America.

It is always good to see a Gopher fan make an incorrect statement. As for INCH, unlike many others, I like the site and find it humorous that they bag on UND for the empty seats, then later mention BC's empty seats, but attempt to offer justification - Red Sox, hunting . . .

I am using the Friday night Gopher game as an example, but from what I saw during that game, he was being physical. Toward the end of the first, with UND down a man, Greene is battling with a Gopher in front of the Sioux net and the puck goes to the far boards, Gopher players turns, Greene gives him a shove in the back with the stick and Gopher goes flying - two minutes for cross checking. Truthfully, with a penalty like that I don't know how it could be avoided (yeah, yeah, I know, don't crosscheck, but that is easier said than done in that situation)? Defensemen have to be allowed to clear out the guy in front of the net - that is a big part of their job, especially on the penalty kill. With Greene's strength, height and size, if he is battling another player and gives a shove, that player will likely hit the ice. Jones took a similar penalty moments later. Again, unavoidable, especially down 5 on 3. If d-men aren't allowed to clear out in front of their net on the penalty kill you might as well just put a goal on the board, nullify the penalty and start play again with another faceoff. I cannot fault him for penalties like that. Some of his other penalties on the hand . . . . . . .

Great info - thanks, PCM!

I also heard that Fuher was practicing this week at forward. If true, I think it is a good decision. Bina has played very well and Radke obviously has a bright future, but needs pt to develop. And I like seeing Fuher on the ice because he has a good shot, usually isn't afraid to rip one at the goaltender and has had success in the past scoring goals. I am sure it will be an adjustment for him, but perhaps it will give the team an added spark.

I see Harrington got a 10-minute misconduct tonight following a 2-minute slashing penalty. Perhaps Lucia will find a way to also blame that on UND.

Three things: First, did we really need another ebay thread (flashback to the high school hockey threads)? Come on! Second - with all due respect to garthnd, the seller, Jeff Panzer was not a member of the '97 championship team, but his brother was. False advertising is not cool especially from what appears to be a Sioux fan. Third, Hrkac is playing for the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL.

If the powers that be in the NHL dislodge their heads from their you-know-whats and there is a season next year, there is very little chance MG will be back. Obviously, the game is not suited to his style of play (I don't say that as a negative against him). Why continue to play college hockey when everything you do leads to the penalty box and most of the same things wouldn't elicit a second look from NHL refs.

I would expect nothing less from a closet Gopher fan!
