But what about the loss of opportunity for local student-athletes? But what about other athletic teams no longer being competitive? But what about not being eligible for the postseason? Do I need to search the Siouxsports archives for more DI cynicism?

UND-GARY, 1. As the 2003-2004 season winds down as NDSU's last in Division II, NDSU athletics must follow Division I rules and regulations from the NCAA for the 2004-2005 season. That's the major factor for the DI references. 2. Are you talking football or athletic programs in general? If it's just football, yes, UND's program has been better lately. Where has it been stated that NDSU's has been better? NDSU will be in a higher level of competition starting next season, but that doesn't necessarily mean that NDSU will be better.

Better yet, what's the capacity of the arena as stated by the Fire Marshall? If it takes 3 hours to get 4,000 people inside, I'm guessing the building wouldn't meet fire code to get them out. It's really perplexing why NCAA DII throws away so much possible revenue.

I think there's a major difference in the visions of Chapman and Kupchella. Chapman wants to see NDSU increase research $$$$, and Kupchella wants to see UND have an enrollment of 25,000 students.

Where there's a will, there's a way to stay in I-A. There was an interesting feature on Nightline this week about college athletics. The AD or president of Tulane talked about how they almost moved to I-AA a few years ago. There was a lot of concern (read $$$$) that made the decision a no-brainer to stay in I-A. I think a lot of the above mentioned schools will have the same "concerns" brought up. There was an interview with a few AD's of schools on the attendance bubble earlier this year. They basically said there are ways to get past the attendance figure, if it even stands in current form.

pirate, Speculation on my part, but I would guess there were more fully funded DII schools back when scholarships were at 60. DII started in 1973, and DI-AA started in 1978. A lot of the bigger DII's packed up their bags and left for I-AA between 78-80.

They had the family that was interviewed in the story on one of the local news tonight (WDAY?). They said a lot was left out of the story to paint a bleak picture (i.e. the "frozen hair incident" was right after a swim meet with wet hair). sioux fan in phoenix, NDSU probably has the capability to drive growth better by having a lot more research that is in tune with the local economy. Partnerships with Ag and Tech companies seem to generate more $$$ locally than what a liberal arts school can produce. An aircraft manufacturer located closer would help the Aerospace program. I am suprised that UND doesn't generate more research $$$ with the Med School, though.

The PSAC allows a total of 70 scholies for all sports, and a maximum of 25 scholarships for football. I believe the NE-10 is "non-scholarship", but as Colgate making it to the I-AA championship proved, that doesn't mean much. The WVIAC I have no idea about.
