  1. The NHL financial situation was spiraling out of control. Most of the league was losing money and most of the Canadian teams could not compete because of the exchange rate. There was some talk of disbanding the league or losing a bunch of teams. When the owners locked out the players they said that most of the teams were losing less money by not playing than they would have if the teams were playing. (The Wild were one of the few teams making good money.) At that time the league did not have a salary cap and the players union said they would not accept it. About the time the owners were ready to cancel the season last year, the union offered a huge pay cut but still wouldn't accept the cap. The owners didn't go for it. Last summer the players proposed a cap that would have been close to the old pay scale. The owners wouldn't take that, but they settled on a number in between and the owners got the pay cut across the board.
  2. No one can guarantee a trip to the Final 5 during the regular season. UND played well enough during the regular season (4th place) to be at home for the first round of the playoffs (against Mankato). All first round series in the WCHA playoffs are play-ins to get to the Final 5. I think that there is a big difference between losing to Holy Cross in the first round of the NC$$ tournament and losing to BC in the Frozen Four. UND lost today because they made mistakes in their own end and BC took advantage of those mistakes. BC has a long tradition of success in hockey and UND-BC has developed into a major rivalry in the tournament. This was their (BC's) year to win. But UND played hard throughout the game and didn't give up until the final horn blew.
  3. Read the disclaimer (the quote box at the very top of the first post). The interview is a figment of PCM's fertile imagination. They didn't do a coach's show this week. It was written in fun.
  4. KCNN 1590 AM in Grand Forks is also broadcasting the game. My guess is that they will have the official NC$$ version.
  5. Two other factors that add to the problem. We had plenty of moisture last fall so the soil was pretty saturated already. Also, I think they got more snow in the southern part of the valley than we did. It seemed like several storms missed us but hit Fargo and south.
  6. I will take the goalie jersey, number 31, either signed or unsigned. Since I can't go to Milwaukee because of work I should celebrate the Regional title in some way. Now we have only 1 left.
  7. Here is some more ammo for you HockeyMom. These are the winning percentages of Hockey East vs. the WCHA over the past several years (from the Hockey East web site). 2005-06 8-8-1 .500 2004-05 5-12-2 .272 2003-04 6-7-3 .469 2002-03 8-9-1 .472 2001-02 5-13-1 .289 2000-01 9-11-4 .458
  8. I just think that if UND is looking at a major change, like moving all sports to DI, you might as well explore all options. That means looking at dropping sports and also looking at other sports to see if there is a better fit that could be added. Now seems to be a good time to look at lax.
  9. UMTC has done well in baseball and is probably one of the few northern schools that could compete in the College World Series. They have the advantage of playing in the Metrodome for early season games. Maybe UND could have that same advantage in lax. I hope that the committee takes a close look at lax as a part of the exploration of DI.
  10. Those seem small for a DI program. Of course the school only has about 1,200 students.
  11. The WCHA was supposed to supply the posters, not the NC$$. But I didn't see them either night. Maybe they will mail them to us.
  12. I am sure that the answer is contractual obligations. FSN pays big dollars for the rights to broadcast pro sports and the contracts probably spell out what they will broadcast in the case of conflicts in schedules. Pro sports will almost always win those battles.
  13. We will have to prove this statement wrong.
  14. There is no guarantee of winning a championship again next year even if everyone comes back. Whether Drew or Jordy plan to come back or not, it is good to celebrate when you have the chance.
  15. The thing he said that caught my attention was that the team learned how to win a championship and protect a lead in last night's game, and that those things would be important in the NC$$ tournament.
  16. One other factor to consider in financial support is the success of the athletic programs. Long term this may be one of the most important factors. The novelty of going DI will wear thin if the program doesn't have success over a length of time. That can include conference success or upsets of big name programs on occassion. A program that is successful in DII at the national level on a consistent basis may provide more excitement and attract more dollars than a DI program that has limited success. UND will need to make the proper commitment in high visibility programs if they decide to go DI.
  17. Using a 4-2.5-1 bonus and the following scenario got us all the way to the 3rd #1 seed. I also found a different scenario using a 3-2-1 bonus that left us in a tie at #16 with Boston College and out of the tournament. I think it shows that almost anything is still possible. 1 Minnesota (Mn) 29 .5839* 2 Wisconsin (Wi) 28 .5775* 3 North Dakota (ND) 26 .5623 4 Miami (Mm) 25 .5618 * CCHA Semifinal #2: Michigan defeats Michigan State. * CCHA Semifinal #1: Northern Michigan defeats Miami. * CCHA Championship game: Michigan defeats Northern Michigan. * CCHA Consolation game: Miami defeats Michigan State. * ECACHL Semifinal #2: Colgate defeats Cornell. * ECACHL Semifinal #1: Dartmouth defeats Harvard. * ECACHL Championship game: Dartmouth defeats Colgate. * ECACHL Consolation game: Cornell defeats Harvard. * Hockey East Semifinal #2: Maine defeats Boston College. * Hockey East Semifinal #1: New Hampshire defeats Boston University. * Hockey East Championship game: Maine defeats New Hampshire. * WCHA Play-in #1: St. Cloud State defeats Minnesota-Duluth. * WCHA Semifinal #2: North Dakota defeats Wisconsin. * WCHA Semifinal #1: Minnesota defeats St. Cloud State. * WCHA Championship game: North Dakota defeats Minnesota. * WCHA Consolation game: Wisconsin defeats St. Cloud State. * Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #2: Mercyhurst defeats Bentley. * Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #1: Holy Cross defeats Connecticut. * Atlantic Hockey Championship game: Holy Cross defeats Mercyhurst. Leaves UND out of tourney: * CCHA Semifinal #2: Michigan defeats Michigan State. * CCHA Semifinal #1: Northern Michigan defeats Miami. * CCHA Championship game: Northern Michigan defeats Michigan. * CCHA Consolation game: Michigan State defeats Miami. * ECACHL Semifinal #2: Colgate defeats Cornell. * ECACHL Semifinal #1: Dartmouth defeats Harvard. * ECACHL Championship game: Dartmouth defeats Colgate. * ECACHL Consolation game: Cornell defeats Harvard. * Hockey East Semifinal #2: Maine defeats Boston College. * Hockey East Semifinal #1: Boston University defeats New Hampshire. * Hockey East Championship game: Maine defeats Boston University. * WCHA Play-in #1: St. Cloud State defeats Minnesota-Duluth. * WCHA Semifinal #2: Wisconsin defeats North Dakota. * WCHA Semifinal #1: St. Cloud State defeats Minnesota. * WCHA Championship game: St. Cloud State defeats Wisconsin. * WCHA Consolation game: Minnesota defeats North Dakota. * Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #2: Mercyhurst defeats Bentley. * Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #1: Holy Cross defeats Connecticut. * Atlantic Hockey Championship game: Holy Cross defeats Mercyhurst.
  18. Just to clarify the point, this article from the Grand Forks Herald from Feb 10th includes these statements:
  19. Gary Gambucci played for UMTC back in the 60's. I think he was Serge's Son.
  20. I'm game. I see most of the games from my seats in 306 and have watched women's games and WJC games from the lower bowl but haven't had a chance to sit in a suite. It sounds like fun, so count me in as long as I know ahead of time so that I can make sure that I don't have to work that night.
  21. Some buildings are built with expansion in mind. A specific wall or section may be built so that it can be removed to expand the building. I have no idea if the Alerus Center was built that way or not. But I believe that the rafters are anchored on the east and west walls which may make it possible to expand to the south.
  22. Here is a nice article on Chris Kuper.
  23. I think you are right PCM. My memory isn't always so good at 2 AM. I think that the students were a major part of his victory. I remember that Hoff was very visible, and not nearly as controversial when he was a candidate. The recall election was a great process to witness.
  24. Yes, they refused to comment on it during this process. But the resolution passed in 2000 still stands as the official position of the tribe. A court would recognize that resolution instead of a no comment in 2005. I am sure that UND will use these facts as part of their legal battle, along with all of the other issues mentioned in the last appeal.
  25. He won because no one ran against him. I live in that ward. It wasn't long before people in the ward were trying to figure out how to recall Mr. Hoff.
