  1. Maybe it's someone from the new theaters they want to put in the Canad Inn complex.
  2. Sure, but most theaters that are showing movies already have lenses. It isn't like they wear out. And these aren't exactly made for home use.
  3. They are worth a lot of money but that is an awfully limited black market.
  4. I don't make a lot of predictions, but I think that there are only 3 ways that a lawsuit doesn't go forward. That is either if the AG decides it is a case that doen't have a chance (he has already said he thinks he has a good case), if they don't have a source of money to fund the case (there seem to be plenty of people willing to donate for the cause) or if the SBoHE backs out. I have been told by 2 very reliable sources that Kupchella is not happy with the way the NC$$ has treated UND and that he wants to go ahead. The whole process just takes time. We will probably know more after the SBoHE meeting in June.
  5. I believe that Kupchella is still working to save the nickname. I wouldn't put much faith in a single quote, you can never even be sure that it is totally accurate.
  6. I could go on a long time about several of your topics but for now I will address these 2. You are right about the Casino election and the group that is against the casino is wrong. They have a right to their opinion. State law and the majority of the people in town disagree with them so if there is an election students will be allowed to vote. But, the chances of the casino even getting to an election are pretty slim. You are wrong about the reasoning for the City Council elections. City elections are usually held at the same time as state primary elections to save money. It costs several thousand dollars to hold an election. Bismarck and Fargo also hold their city elections the same day so they are no more student friendly than Grand Forks. None of them are trying to limit the number of students voting. If students don't like it there are processes in place to change government. As far as some of the other items you listed as anti-student, I think that if you look around at other college towns you will find that many of them have similar noise ordinances, similar liquor in the park ordinances, similar rental laws, similar issues with student behavior at sporting events (see "the Chant" topic on USCHO), etc, etc. In other words, Grand Forks is no more or less ant-student than most college towns. It is far from a perfect place. But it is a good place to live for students and non-students, they just need to figure out how to live with each other which means compromise and respect on both sides.
  7. Obviously Simon doesn't understand classic American music.
  8. How about little country streams, sleep without dreams, sunday school in may, and hay?
  9. I kind of like the concept. It will be a hard sell unless some large donor steps forward. The Athletic Department and the University may have bigger needs right now. But it would add alot to the atmosphere at UND football games.
  10. I wouldn't trade our new Ralph for any other sports facility in the world, at least none that I have heard about. I share season tickets with a friend and we have already agreed that we plan to keep our seats until we are too old to walk all the way up those stairs. I figure another 30 or 40 years (we can always hope). Most Gopher fans are actually good people, just a little misguided . Trolls on the other hand can get annoying after a while. But I don't take much of what is said on here or other boards very seriously so they don't really bother me that much.
  11. I didn't say that I don't enjoy the new Ralph. It's just different. I think it is the best hockey facility in the world and I have a great time almost every time I am there (sometimes a loss takes away a little fun). I don't get too worried about what anyone else is doing at the games because I am too busy watching the games and occasionally yelling at the refs (even though they can't hear me from the top of the upper deck). My comment was more about the fact that the atmosphere is different in the new buildings than it was in the old buildings and that it is interesting that Gopher fans make comments similar to what has been said on this board. And I have a lot of great memories from both the old Ralph and the old Mariucci. Besides, I was actually communicating with a Gopher fan without anyone throwing out insults . That doesn't always happen on here.
  12. I think it would be more fun to wear the Holy Cross stuff to the Final Five for a UMTC game against anyone but UND. 1) I would rather wear green when facing the maroon. 2) There would probably be more people in the building that would enjoy the joke. Your description of Mariucci sounds a lot like the Ralph for a regular season game. I guess that is one of the downsides of the new larger buildings in college hockey. I used to go to the old Mariucci a lot for games, but I have never had a chance to get in the new building. I was living in the Cities when it opened but you couldn't find a ticket in those days. The old Mariucci was a lot of fun, just like the old Ralph.
  13. Thanks for the advice. I am just glad that I am not so obsessed with a rival that I would go on one of their fan web sites and try to insult them. And living in Grand Forks isn't so bad. At least you can have a life instead of sitting in a car during rush hour traffic for an hour or more every day.
  14. That is the same reaction I think (and hope) that I would have in a similar situation. But you have to admit that not all of your fellow Gopher fans have the same sense of humor. Sioux fans in Holy Cross jerseys and shirts is just a good natured jab at a rival. Plus they are great souvenirs of the first... and maybe last NC$$ Regional tournament held in Grand Forks. It was one of the most memorable nights of hockey played so far at the Ralph.
  15. You get a bunch of Gopher fans to wear Holy Cross t-shirts to a UND-UMTC hockey game and I will applaud them for having a sense of humor and being able to laugh at themselves.
  16. Got my jersey today from YaneA. It looks great and it fits me so I can wear it to annoy my UMTC loving friends. Thanks again to forecheck for putting this together and YaneA for distributing.
  17. I wasn't talking about any candidate in particular or how I would have handled this search. If I saw Bobby Knight as a reference I would definitely look seriously at that candidate. Whether I would have called would depend on other factors like experience, education, success and so on, it wouldn't be an automatic call. And just because I called for that reference wouldn't guarantee an in person interview. Buning and/or the committee set up the criteria before getting applications and supposedly followed their own criteria in selecting candidates to interview.
  18. I have hired people in private industry and served on a search committee at UND. You only contact references for people you are seriously considering for the position. I am sure that they used the guidelines outlined in the job announcement to eliminate the people that were not qualified, found a group that most closely matched that criteria, and decided to look closer at those people. My guess is that they checked references on 5-10 candidates (maybe a few more) and made their list of candidates to interview. Without seeing the applications or talking with references it is very difficult to tell how qualified the current candidates are.
  19. The NC$$ will continue to move ahead with their agenda and pick off schools one by one until something is done to stop them. I can only see 3 ways to stop them, the courts, Congress or by an uprising of the membership. I don't see the majority of the membership getting too worked up because they are starting with smaller schools and doing it in small groups. I was hesitant about legislation, but it may be the best answer in the long term to put them back in their place. But, eventually I believe that the issue will end up in court. I am glad that the AG and the UND legal departments are already working on the case.
  20. There has been plenty of discussion of an evening start time. The main reason that UND starts all home football games at the same time is that Coach Lennon wants it that way. The reasons given have been consistency for the team, they develop a game day pattern they can follow every week, and the belief that college football was meant to be played on Saturday afternoons.
  21. I don't think that a large number of people go on vacation in October. Make other plans like hunting perhaps.
  22. I've noticed that we have several younger members here the past couple of months so I thought that I would provide a little info they probably missed. Maybe we need to create a list of FAQs that new members could use to cut down on the number of repeats.
  23. According to news reports tonight, Kupchella met with the Attorney General and others to discuss options. The AG is going to research the possibilities and present the options to the June Board of Higher Education meeting. It sounds like they are concentrating on the vague way that the NC$$ has handled this case and overstepped it's bounds rather than the name itself. Kupchella said that they are continuing to work with the tribes to improve those relationships.
  24. When they set up the rotating 4 year schedule they set up each team with a partner (or rival) that they would play every year both home and away. UND and SCSU were paired up as rivals. So we will always play SCSU 4 times per year (until they change the schedule).
