  1. Best post I have read in ages. Much better than I ever could have said it.
  2. There are as many styles of coaching as there are people in coaching. No style is necessarily better than others. In other sports you can look at total opposites like John Wooden and Bobby Knight, or Bud Grant and Bill Parcells. All were had or have great winning records, but had totally different styles. Hak's style is to be calm and in control on the bench. We don't know what his style is in the locker room or on the bus. His style has worked the past 2 years. Southpaw's right, Hak has different challenges than Blais had so he will handle them in his own way.
  3. Do you really believe that Hak hasn't noticed the problem in the 2nd periods? Or that he hasn't worked to solve the problem? He has even mentioned it in interviews. Some problems are harder to solve than others. I am sure that Hak and the other coaches will continue to work on the problem and will do everything they can think of to fix it. Personally, I hope that the last game is a sign of things to come since they played much better in the 2nd period than they have in most other games this year.
  4. Born in Grand Forks. Lived in Thompson for a while as a kid and then moved to our farm closer to Grand Forks, but still in the Thompson school district. Went to UND for 4 years and lived in Grand Forks for a few years after. Moved to Tacoma, Washington for about 1 1/2 years. The company I worked for was going bankrupt so I moved to the Twin Cities for 4 years, 2 in St. Paul and 2 in Burnsville. Moved back to Grand Forks almost 13 years ago and I don't have any plans to leave again.
  5. The latest report is that the group will not be in Grand Forks to protest the funeral. Earlier this week Dakota Huseby of KNOX radio made a deal with the group. She agreed to give them time on her show if they would stay away. I don't know when they will be on (she has the 2-5 PM slot weekdays) but I think it would be a great time to listen to another station for a while.
  6. I just sent an e-mail to Mike McNamara from KNOX to make sure he is aware of the arrangements. For those not in the area, Mac is a retired Marine officer that has just returned from a second tour of Iraq as a part of the Marine Reserves. He does the 9-Noon talk show on KNOX and spends a great deal of time talking about the soldiers and serving the country. He had Cpl. Kleinwachter's mother on his show earlier this week. I am sure that he will get the word out.
  7. I think you are about ready for a time out little one. Or maybe it's past your bedtime, you seem to be getting a little cranky. On the positive side, your spelling seems to have improved. You must be working really hard on those vocabulary words.
  8. Unfortunately, they are taking advantage of the very freedom that these soldiers have died protecting. Some laws have been changed recently to keep protests a distance away from the funeral but it isn't always enough. It is too bad that we can't set up an exchange program to send them to Iraq or some place to see the reaction they would get there for their protests. I am sure that the family would appreciate any support the community can provide.
  9. You don't have to ride, they even say that in their mission statement. It look's like they are doing great work. I had heard about them before but I didn't realize how active or how organized they are. I think they deserve some recognition for the what they are doing to combat the wacko element.
  10. Check out their web site at www.patriotguard.org. They are all about respect, especially for our veterans. They have a picture on their front page welcoming the North Dakota Army Guard unit from Minot home. They also have forums for soldiers that die that may need rides, have rides scheduled or have completed rides.
  11. According to their web site the Patriot Guard will be at the viewing on Friday evening, the funeral on Saturday and also at a prayer service on Saturday evening in Wahpeton. They seem to be very organized. They are going to form an honor line on the way into the funeral and also lead the way from the funeral to the cemetary.
  12. You seem to feel that there will be an immediate change in attitude if the name changes. North Dakota State University fans were yelling "Sioux Suck" at a football game against the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis this fall. UND had nothing to do with the game in any way imaginable. We haven't played North Dakota State for a few years now and it has been years since we played the University of Minnesota in a major sport other than hockey. And yet, the chant had absolutely nothing to do with any hatred of Dakota, Lakota or Nakota people. As well known as the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname is with the schools we normally compete against, it will be a long time before that dies down with our opponents even if the name is changed. So it will be both UND supporters and opponents that will continue to use the name. There is a good chance that you will hear it for years, and they still probably won't be talking about your family. Again, the current situation at Dartmouth is an example of what can happen more than 30 years after a name change. I would hope that the people of this area would handle the situation better, but there is no guarantee.
  13. I have a question for you undsportsfan. You said you believe that people against the nickname will not stop protesting until the name is changed. Why do you believe that all of the people in favor of the nickname would give up if the name is changed? I know that a lot of people would follow what ever decisions were made. But we have seen at Dartmouth that a lot of people don't let go. That could be as divisive as the current situation or worse, again see Dartmouth.
  14. That sounds like a really expensive tour. I'm glad I already did the regular tour.

    Goodbye NCC

I would not be surprised if UM Crookston drops to either Division III or NAIA. According to this article in the GF Herald, a study shows they are more in line with Division III. Then, if the 4 NCC schools joined and 1 other school left the NSIC would be at 12 schools. I don't know which other school might be interested in moving either down or to another leage.
  16. Originally it was called the Winter Sports Building or something similar to that. Ralph made a rather large donation, maybe in the 80's(?), and they changed the name. I think it was when they were doing some remodeling to the building. It might have been when they added the entry on the front. So your age probably is showing, just like mine.
  17. Bob Kerr from WDAZ is on KNOX right now saying that they will carry the game. The game will be on the Fighting Sioux Sports Network and they will just carry the feed from the Grand Valley announcers. Grand Valley has been expanding their capabilities, similar to what UND has done. The game will start at 11:30.
  18. The Chorney's in hockey.
  19. I was a kid when they played, but it is hard to beat these brothers in the all-time UND record book: and:
  20. Saturday tickets are now sold also.
  21. Tickets are sold for Friday night, still available for Saturday.
  22. Griggs was on North 3rd Street in GF through most of the 80's until 95 or 96. It was in one of the buildings that burnt down during the flood. They brought in a lot of blues bands over the years. They also poured a really stiff drink.
  23. Don't forget Griggs Landing for some blues.
  24. I have a pair of tickets available for both Colorado College games. The tickets are in Section 306 Row M. I am in Grand Forks and will be attending both games (sitting right next to you) so there should be no trouble getting the tickets to you. I am asking $20 per ticket or best offer.
  25. I listened to the pregame and the first part of the game. I may be wrong because I was working at the same time, but I thought they said she was injured. I don't think it was severe (rolled ankle?). It sounded like they just wanted to hold her out this weekend to give it a chance to heal.
