  1. It will be interesting to see if this game gets played. It sounded like UND was still in Grand Forks as of this morning. The highway has been closed since yesterday and may not open until either late tomorrow or even on Sunday. I don't know if UND will get to Lincoln or not.
  2. How about this for an example, would you like it if all of your medical conditions or issues were broadcast on SiouxSports.com? Or on television and radio? Do any of the rest of us have a right to that information? Of course not. Medical information, information about a person's body, is private. They can share it if they want, but they also have the right to keep it private. I believe that the individual's rights trump the rights of the masses in this type situation. And I guess that the US government agreed because they made the law several years ago.
  3. Actually, it doesn't. They are under no obligation to provide their private medical information to anyone. That is part of what the law is about, that information is private, although it isn't specific to athletes. HIPAA laws apply to everyone in every walk of life. Why would they want to tell someone where they are injured? Just so fans feel better because they have some knowledge? And also let players on other teams know where their weak point is so they can take shots? Fans don't have any rights to that kind of information.
  4. An individual that is 18 years of age or older can say anything they want about themselves, and can allow others to release the information. But no one else is allowed to release that information without permission. That's why hospitals can only release information to family members, why pro and college teams can no longer release information on injuries, etc. That's why so many injuries are reported as "upper body" or "lower body" injuries. That is about as specific as they are allowed to be without the individual giving consent. HIPAA (wrong initials in first post) laws are federal laws to protect individuals. Privacy is only one part of HIPAA.
  5. There are HIPPA laws that restrict what kind of information can be released about an individual's medical condition. They apply to medical people, businesses, government offices, etc. So there are plenty of reasons for not releasing that information other than the fact that it is good to keep the other guys guessing.
  6. I remember seeing the same map, and Hammersmith could very well be the one that posted it. So unless I'm smoking the same thing, it must have happened.
  7. Similar maps were posted on here a couple of years ago for both UND and NDSU, but I don't remember even which forum to look under. But that also tells me there should be a web site somewhere that would have that info. Have you tried your friend Google?
  8. Religion is one reason that many look at it. Quality of the school (education) is another big reason. The coach is another big reason. But it has an image and reputation built around the football program that has extended to the entire school. Even though the football team has been down for several years, kids want to go play at Notre Dame. Hockey has drawn some because of that.
  9. As I pointed out on another thread, they don't plan to ask Siouxland Buffalo or any other private business to change their name. It was brought up, discussed, and they realized that they had no right to do that. A lot of things get brought up at meetings that have no chance of ever being acted upon.
  10. I prefer having a regular discussion, and not having to deal with all of the BS. Most of us are adults and I don't think it's asking too much for people to act like adults. That includes a little civility and no name calling. If you want to rant or vent you can go to BV.
  11. First of all, dakota fairways and I have been talking about the Missouri Valley Football Conference in conjunction with the Summit League, the leagues that NDSU compete in, versus the Big Sky, the league that UND is joining. We were not discussing the Missouri Valley Conference, the league that NDSU would like to join. There is a huge difference between the MVFC and the MVC for all other sports. There are teams that compete in both. But most of the teams that have given the MVC its prominence, are not in the MVFC. Schools like Bradley and Creighton have had some good basketball teams that have played and even won games in the tournament. The MVC has more exposure in the basketball world than the Big Sky does. That exposure hasn't completely crossed over to the football world. And even in basketball, people may know the schools if they have a good run, but they don't know much about the other schools in the conference. A lot of people still don't know who is in the MVFC. As a matter of fact, it probably confuses them because the schools they know in the MVC don't have football teams in the MVFC. They probably know UNI, may know SIU and may know NDSU or another school. The MVFC has given the conference better visibility than when it was the Gateway, but the majority of the country don't know it and a majority in this area only know it now because NDSU is part of it. Neither the MVFC or the Summit is as well known in this area or around a large part of the country as the Big Sky.
  12. Exactly. That's why the Big Sky was seen as a desirable destination for both NDSU and UND as they moved up.
  13. It wasn't just your comment. But one of the complaints of the anti-nickname crowd was the lack of respect for the name (and therefore for the people themselves). They felt that the nickname dehumanized them. Making fun of the nickname just added to that. Some of the examples that they used in their arguments were cases where the nickname was abused by other schools. Your "poke" was a small example. Add to that the fact that emotions are still running high because the nickname is being lost, and you are going to get a reaction. If you were more of a known commodity on this board you might be able to get away with things like that. But there are enough trolls that come through here that comments like yours are called out very quickly. Plus, this isn't BV where they flame away constantly. If you want conversation, that's fine. Leave the digs at the nickname out of it.
  14. Your reading comprehension really needs work. He said nothing like that. He said that historically (before NDSU moved up), people in this area were much more aware of the Big Sky than the MVFC. They were aware because of the Montana schools. And since those same people weren't really as aware of the MVFC, they didn't pay attention to schools like Illinois State or Missouri State. However, they did pay a little attention to Montana and Montana State. I will add that those same people were aware of UNI, but really had very little idea about who else was in a conference with UNI, whereas most people could have named at least a few of the other teams in the Big Sky.
  15. That kind of "poke" at UND is one of the many things that helped give the anti-nickname crowd some traction. It isn't going to be taken lightly on this board.
  16. AZSioux keeps a list of former players in the pros and in coaching. He has it at azsioux.com, top of the list on the left. It seems pretty accurate. The media guide usually has a list also. And you can search by player name or by team at hockeydb.com to get complete lists of teams each player has played on, or players on each team.
  17. Way too many variables to try and predict who might be available and interested in a position a year from now.
  18. Warriors itself is pretty generic, but if it can be dressed up some way I like the concept. Here are some others using Warriors. Warriors --- Appalachian Bible College (Bradley, West Virginia) Bacone College (Muskogee, Oklahoma) California State University-Stanislaus (Stanislaus, California) Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, Missouri) Corban College (Salem, Oregon) (former name: Western Baptist College) Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic, Connecticut) East Stroudsburg University (East Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania) Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas) Indiana Institute of Technology (Fort Wayne, Indiana) Life Pacific College (San Dimas, California) (former name: Life Bible College) Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho) Lycoming College (Williamsport, Pennsylvania) Merrimack College (North Andover, Massachusetts) Miami Christian University (Miami, Florida) Midland Lutheran College (Fremont, Nebraska) National War College (part of National Defense University) (Washington, D.C.) Rochester College (Rochester, Michigan) Southern Wesleyan University (Central, South Carolina) Sterling College (Sterling, Kansas) Trinity International University-South Florida Campus (Miami, Florida) Union College (Lincoln, Nebraska) University of Akron-Wayne College (Orrville, Ohio) University of Hawaii (men's team) (Honolulu, Hawaii) (former nickname: Rainbow Warriors) Waldorf College (Forest City, Iowa) Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan) (former nickname: Tartars) Webber International University (Babson Park, Florida) (former name: Webber College) Westmont College (Santa Barbara, California) William Jessup University (Rocklin, California) (former name: San Jose Christian College) Winona State University (Minnesota) Wisconsin Lutheran College (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
  19. Just the fact that we participate on a sports forum probably disqualifies almost everyone on here as an average fan.
  20. Most of those regional programs are probably booked out that far already, so he may just be filling a spot until one of them has an opening.
  21. How do you go about defining an "average fan"? And how do you choose one or 2 to be on such a committee? How many should be on such a committee? What are their qualifications for being on such a committee? And I don't buy that the "average fan" is losing the most in this. This is about the University of North Dakota, what they have to do and what is best for the University. You're acting like this committee is the group that decided to get rid of the nickname. They are just working out the details for an issue that was decided by many others. UND isn't going to keep the nickname in any public way, doing so would hurt any chance of tranistioning to a new nickname. This committee is figuring out how to make that change. The committee has a wide variety of people on it, from different parts of the University. That includes people that didn't like the Fighting Sioux nickname and those that did. Their qualifications often are that they represent a segment of the University, probably have an interest in the topic and are willing to get involved. No one is going to totally agree with the makeup of the committee, but I don't think it's too bad. And I'm willing to listen to what Dr. Bruce Smith, former All-American football player at UND, has to say on the topic. He has a major interest in making this transition go as smoothly as it can. He also got his doctorate from Florida State so he is probably familiar with their situation also.
  22. Stacked with anti-Sioux moniker folks? You mean people like Bruce Smith and Charlie Bridgeford and Tim O'Keefe?
  23. It was a meaningless exhibition game with at least 4 regular skaters not playing, 2 of them playing with Grimaldi at World Juniors camp. UND dominated the play throughout the game. The Under 18 team scored on a powerplay with their goalie pulled. I think that the only people that are embarrassed are people that took the game a little too serious.
  24. The rule makes sense financially, which is why the coaches and the administrators of the schools choose to keep it. The local school is going to draw the most people. Having them play in the evening game on Friday gives the best chance to attract fans. The best chance of it going away would be if all of the sessions are sold out and the stands filled for all of those games. After all, this event is the biggest financial source for the league. It is the same reason that BCS leagues are going to league title games in football, it's all about the money.
  25. I don't have any problems with people coming on to ask questions or give opinions. But it gets tiring seeing the constant insults and shots from the fanbase to the south.
