Anyone still worried about having too many players on the roster this year?

Picking something that is hip and cool is usually a bad idea because it never stays hip and cool. It normally becomes outdated and laughable pretty quickly. All you have to do is look at trends in clothing or music. History or something solid is a normally a better choice if you want something to last long term. That's why a theme using settlers, farmers, ranchers, rivers, Old West or something similar works great. Aerospace, oil or energy and other similar current themes may work because they will have some longevity and aren't just a flavor of the month type thing.

My criteria are very similar. The only real difference is that I would consider using a name that is used by someone else if it is in no way in competition or comparable to UND. For instance, a DIII school with limited sports in another part of the country, a high school in another part of the country or a low level minor league team in some sport. I would like to find something as unique as possible, but recognize that it may not be possible to find something that can be supported by a large group of people that is also totally unique. A logo that is unique to the school would be a requirement.

The 7th got destroyed that day, but the Cavalry and the US Army were plenty hostile and abusive for many years. That's why I think Cavalry would cause a lot of friction for many people and some would claim it was an effort at payback for losing the Fighting Sioux nickname.

I'm not so sure that Red River would appreciate UND stealing their nickname. Would UND fans like it if an NHL team moved into Grand Forks and called themselves the Fighting Sioux? Some would, especially now that UND is going to stop using it, but a lot would hate a more visible team taking on the school identity.

I didn't say I wouldn't be there, I said I wouldn't want to be. I would probably put on about 6 layers of clothes and show up like I do for pretty much every home game unless I have to work.

Forecast for this Saturday in Grand Forks (since FCS teams are still playing home games in the playoffs). I don't think that I would want to sit through a game at Memorial at 8 degrees.

Two points. First, this is a bus for students that is sponsored by Sioux Crew. In other words, this is a function of the University. It is not for the general public. As such it has to be alcohol free. The bus was announced at the games this weekend and if you read the page you would have seen it was a Sioux Crew function. Second, if you can't go an hour without a cocktail you probably have a problem. I do live in Grand Forks, I do know the culture. I've lived in or around Grand Forks a majority of my life. I also like a cocktail from time to time. A lot of people would like to have cocktails. But I will repeat, if you can't go an hour without then you have a problem. The pregame gathering is at a bar in Fargo, you can go have your cocktails there if you want.

Minnesota has had enough PR problems and Athletic Department issues to last for a long time. They had no interest in hiring someone involved in a lawsuit over mistreating a player. Leach was never going to be an option for Minnesota during this process.

That's the main one I use.

An average coach wins 63.5% of the games he coaches over 17 years? An average coach has only 4 losing seasons out of those 17? That sounds like a pretty good coach to me. Not Hall of Fame worthy, but certainly better than average.

I'm sure that only having 1 loss is what pushes them to the top. They have a pretty good winning percentage.

Target in Grand Forks couldn't get any bigger than it was. And it was doing close to the amount of business that the Fargo Target was doing. So they had to build a new store in a new location in order to keep building the business. At the time they were really kicking off the Super Target theme. So they chose to build a Super Target in Grand Forks. It was a test, and also a decision to build for the future rather than have to add on again in the future. In Fargo they had room so they added on to the store. The city of Grand Forks had NO INFLUENCE on the decision to build a Super Target. That decision was made by Target management in MINNEAPOLIS. Any rivalry between Grand Forks and Fargo had absolutely NO BEARING on the decision by Target to build a Super Target in Grand Forks and not build one in Fargo. It was a business decision.
-
The city of Grand Forks didn't have anything to do with Target building a new store and making it a Super Target. Target did that all on its own. They did it because it made good business sense. They couldn't expand the old one any further so they had to build new. In Fargo they had room to expand the store a lot more. Other businesses also make their own decisions about whether to build in Grand Forks or Fargo or both, based on what they think is good for them. The Alerus Center was built in part for concerts, and in part to attract conventions. Conventions bring a lot more people to town over a year than concerts, as I've mentioned before. Grand Forks didn't have anyplace that could do a good size convention before the Alerus. Fargo, Bismarck and even Minot had better facilities for conventions than Grand Forks before the Alerus. That was the big draw for the business community. The concert idea was a draw for the general public. Their is plenty of rivalry between Fargo and Grand Forks, but not everything that happens in either town is because of the rivalry.

The North Stars didn't start playing in the NHL until 1967. They had a bunch of owners. The first group was led by Walter Bush, who has been part of USA Hockey for years. He started a minor league for hockey in 1955. I don't ever remember hearing about any connection between him and UND.

What evidence has anyone seen or heard that anyone wants to change the colors? There is a lot of angst about absolutely nothing.
-
The answer is no. The only time any talk about changing colors has come up so far is when people ask if anyone has talked about changing the colors. And then someone else either jumps to a conclusion or else they take a shot at Kelley and Faison for no reason.

Politicians Trying To Push Sioux/Bison Game Again
82SiouxGuy replied to octupus25's topic in Football
I've heard that the Nickel never stays in one place. It is in constant motion, 24/7/365. A team of people keep it protected from interlopers. Blizzards are the toughest days, but they usually get a Highway Patrol escort. Sometimes they disguise it like a big quarter. Anything they have to do to keep the Nickel safe. -
Little Caesar's Tournament is Jan 20-23, 2011. You can find it at www.reahockeyacademy.com/tournaments/view/?little_caesars_north_american_showcase.

Not even close to the same. I don't care what a suhaki is. A UND football player would not be happy if their team nickname was pronounced "Sioux Hockey". It doesn't matter where the nickname comes from, whether it was hockey or football or the geology department. As a joke, or a way to poke fun at the NCAA this is fine. But there is no way that any other sport on campus would support the actual use of suhaki as a nickname.

Just because you don't like what's happened doesn't mean that there are any corrupt politicians. You may not understand this, but people have different opinions. Unless you have actual proof of corruption you better be careful about making accusations. What you and many other people don't realize is that many people in North Dakota and around the country really don't care either way about the Fighting Sioux nickname. It isn't an issue that they are going to get excited about and it isn't an issue that they are going to stick their neck out to defend. True politicians realize that fighting to keep the nickname isn't going to buy them enough votes to be worth the time, effort or political capital it would cost. That's why none of the politicians in North Dakota got really active in this issue. Archie and his group have tried very hard. But Archie has been on that reservation long enough to know how its government works. A small group of people can often control a tribal government. You see it all over. Jesse Taken Alive and Ron His Horse is Thunder have been very open about their feelings on UND and the nickname. The only way that Archie or anyone else would get something different through the council would be to change the council. That didn't happen. That's why so many people were of the opinion that nothing would be approved by Standing Rock. The people of Standing Rock are the only people that can change how the government on their reservation operates. The UND nickname isn't important enough of an issue for the majority of the residents of Standing Rock to get excited about. They have to worry about the high unemployment, medical issues, how they are going to feed their families, etc.

The Tribal Court at Standing Rock finally makes a statement. The statement is that it isn't going to force a vote.
