  1. They've probably gotten some e-mails and letters that have left the same impression over the past few years.
  2. Who could have possibly guessed that legal system would follow the law?
  3. A better question might be "What do you really think would be the result, or the reaction from the NCAA?" My guess is it would be something like "So sorry to see you leave, and don't let the door hit you on the way out."
  4. There are probably quite a few people that voted for him that wouldn't do it again.
  5. I agree that it's not the best way to handle the situation. But most small business people don't have a lot of experience working with the press and don't have plans to handle tough situations. They normally aren't ready to handle something that could be bad PR. And their employees probably have even less experience. So mistakes get made and sometimes things get made worse than they could have or should have. Depending on what happens next, this may be a good learning tool for other small businesses.
  6. Having a health department issue is not good PR for a restaurant so maybe they are just trying to avoid it. Or maybe they don't have a definite plan yet. Small businesses don't have PR departments so a lot of them just stay quiet if they can rather than deal with an issue.
  7. I've already said that I don't think it's going to happen. But that's the way they think. Like I said earlier, they have UND right where they want, so I don't see them expanding things at this time.
  8. But the South Carolina state law doesn't have anything to do with any schools or even with athletics, yet the NCAA stepped in. Big picture, the state of North Dakota is defying the NCAA so they may at some point do something that will affect the entire state.
  9. Whether you agree with him or not, John usually has a pretty good handle on the facts of the situation.
  10. John Strand from the High Plains Reader in Fargo will be debating Al Carlson about the Fighting Sioux nickname law during the 6:30 news on KX4 in a segment called the Hot Box.
  11. They would have had to fight several battles at one time in your scenario. Florida State would have fought, UND fought, Illinois was fighting, and all of these would have emboldened some other schools. This way might be easier. With UND in a corner it would be hard to see anyone other than Florida State and maybe Utah willing to fight an all out ban. If they can control Florida State they would be done. So one step at a time might have been the best way from their perspective.
  12. I wouldn't mind seeing 16,000 vote no, because a lot more than 32,000 people are going to vote in the election.
  13. The state wouldn't have anything to do with extending the sanctions, the NCAA would do that. South Carolina is on sanctions because they have a Confederate flag flying over a Confederate Memorial on the state capital grounds. It isn't the South Carolina flag. How does that flag flying over a memorial have anything to do with any of the colleges in South Carolina. Flying the flag in that location is in South Carolina state law. That is why it could be used as a precedent for putting all of North Dakota on sanctions because the nickname would be in state law. That being said, I don't think the NCAA would do that any time soon because they are already getting the results they want from UND.
  14. There are a lot of people tired of hearing about the issue and I think most of them will vote to change it. The election may be decided by the size of that group.
  15. They were prepared for that push back in 2005. At the time they thought that the Seminoles in Oklahoma were against the nickname and they planned to use that as ammunition. Then they found out that their information was wrong, so they pulled back and set up an approval system. But the NCAA really wanted to get rid of all Native American names in 2005.
  16. Most people over-value the merchandise rights in college sports. The schools only get a small percentage of the merchandise value. In 2009-2010 Florida State brought in approximately $11.5 million for royalties, licensing, advertising and sponsorship. My guess is that a large majority of that comes from advertising and sponsorship. Florida State ranked 19th in licensing that year. Auburn was 15th that year and received about $2.5 million. So Florida State probably is closer to $2 million in licensing. Auburn jumped to 4th place at $5.3 million the next year after winning the FBS title. The Seminoles haven't given a time limit on the approval. They could pull it today if they wanted and the NCAA would give FSU a year to transition away. Because of the casinos the tribe probably won't pull the approval any time soon. But that can always change.
  17. I'll help with transportation costs.
  18. A lot of times I've heard of redshirting if someone had a serious injury toward the end of a season and wouldn't be fully healthy for a significant portion of the next year. They don't qualify as a medical redshirt, but don't want to waste an entire year of eligibility for a small number of games. Other times I've heard of them doing it if they had to use them as true freshman because of numbers, but once they get a full roster one of the next couple years they may give a player some time to finish developing so he can have 1 or 2 really strong years at the end of his career.
  19. Redshirts have been used during every school year for a variety of reasons. If the coaches felt he had the ability to develop into a productive player why not redshirt him?
  20. Not everyone has white or black shirts that they want to wear to a game. For instance, I've got white t-shirts, but that's not what I wear to games. I've done it for some of the white outs at hockey games. My only other choice would be dress shirts. But I don't wear white very often and I don't want to wear white to a game. I usually wear jerseys or windshirts or hoodies. I've got green and black jerseys and windshirts, and green hoodies. And the problem with green is that there are so many shades of green for UND shirts. Getting a student section to wear one color would be more possible, but it will be difficult to get the entire crowd to follow even for one game, much less for every game.
  21. That one only makes sense in Dave's World, a lonely and scary place.
  22. Between this issue and Measure 2, which wants to eliminate property taxes without a plan to replace that revenue, I think the turnout will be much higher than normal for a primary.
  23. It was late when I wrote that. I assumed that he was making a joke, but with some of the things that have been written lately I just wanted to be sure.
  24. Dave wasn't around back in WWII, so he probably wouldn't like that. It would have to be something like they had in the 70's or 80's since those are the most important years to Dave. And he definitely isn't going to like the black helmets idea.
  25. Nothing is more important than what Dave wants. Otherwise he will develop bad feelings and resentment. Who wouldn't resent it if someone tried to change something important like a college sports team uniform without Dave's approval?
