  1. I just hope they make the tournament.
  2. In a word: PAINFUL. I'm not writing off the Sioux just yet, but clearly the better team won tonight. It's just painful to see the Sioux so outmatched. If I'm a CC fan, I'm making plans for Buffalo.
  3. I was not trying to create controversy. I didn't post anything on here until I noticed the discussion on two other boards. I don't know exactly what the correct interpretation of the rule is. Other fans seem to say that simply mentioning a prospect is a violation of the rule. I don't read the rule that way. However, the only part that concerns me is that Blais *seemed* to be commenting on the ability of SC (yes, I know PCM's summary is not verbatim and I didn't actually hear the show). That seems to be directly covered by the rule. I too greatly appreciate the summaries and I hope this flare-up doesn't prevent people from posting them.
  4. I never said they shouldn't have a say. They clearly are getting a say. And I can somewhat understand where the hotel owners are coming from. I just think they're misguided. The city is offering an incentive package to Canad to realize an opportunity that is not being addressed by the local business. The city has had the offer on the table for a long time. I'm sure the city would have been more than responsive to a local group, but no locals have stepped up. The motel owners claim there is no need for another motel. If Grand Forks wants to simply preserve the status quo, there may not be a need. But, if Grand Forks wants to expand, attract conventions, host world-class events, there is a need. Maybe that's the rub. If the people of Grand Forks are simply happy with what they have and simply want to maintain the status quo, then they'll get what they deserve and shouldn't complain at all when their kids leave the state for better opportunities. Is Canad a savior? No. But it is a piece of the puzzle. And more importantly, other business/investors will take note of this situation and how the city reacts. I would agree that the city should not give Canad unreasonable incentives to lure them to the city. However, I don't believe the package the city is offering is anywhere close to unreasonable. Whether one likes it or not, economic development usually involves some sort of incentive from a governmental entity to a business it is courting. As long as the incentive package passes the cost/benefit test, I think it's a good thing. In my opinion, prudent economic development can drastically help communities like Grand Forks who are struggling with the outmigration of their young people. If the city is healthy and growing, all the businesses benefit. And I ask you again, what is the alternative? How will doing nothing help existing hotels? And on the tax issue, I don't pay taxes to Grand Forks because I don't live there. (except for sales tax when I go and spend money there). But that's part of the point. I think there are many young people from the area that would like to stay/go back to Grand Forks if they could come back to a growing economy and good jobs. The protectionist attitude Grand Forks has maintained for the last 50 years will certainly do nothing to make that happen.
  5. At what point does a player become a "prospect" as defined by NCAA rules?
  6. I didn't hear the show so I have no idea if there was a violation. But I wonder why Blais says anything at all about potential recruits. Why risk getting into a grey area?
  7. http://pub7.ezboard.com/fcctigerhockeyfrm1
  8. There's already some talk on POI and the CC board about Blais' comments regarding Crosby and whether there was a violation of NCAA rules.
  9. The unfortunate part of all this is that the hotel won't be built in time for the World Juniors. What a great showcase for Grand Forks that could have been. Also, there will probably not be enough motel rooms in Grand Forks available to meet demand that week. I believe there is a figure skating competition going on at the Ralph this weekend. I've heard many of the participants are staying in Fargo, Grafton, Crookston, etc. because all the rooms are booked in Grand Forks. The more people that have to stay out-of-town for events like these, the more Grand Forks will be considered unable to handle world-class events. I do not doubt that occupancy rates are low, but "doing nothing" certainly will not bring those numbers up. The motel operators in Grand Forks are being extremely short-sighted. They may think they're "protecting their turf" but if economic development is resisted to this degree, there soon will be no "turf" to protect. The motel operators are acting as if the city is building the hotel for Canad Inns. They are not. They are giving Canad an almost free lease of the land (which would simply sit undeveloped if nothing is done), free use of a water park (which was in the plans before Canad was even in the picture), and a parking lot. It's not like the city is giving away the farm here. I really thought the attitudes in Grand Forks were beginning to change, but a story like this is very disappointing.
  10. Bemidji is not on Midco's list of cities in the Fighting Sioux television network. However, I can't remember if Bemidji gets WDAZ or not. If they do, you'll get the game. If they don't, go to a sports bar with a big dish and have them plug in the coordinates. Coordinates are found here Whatever you do, don't watch the game at the Corner Bar (in Nymore). That's where I watched the Frozen Four final in 2001. Their burgers may be outstanding, but the place is now officially cursed.
  11. Now that the games will officially be on satellite, I too am wondering the same thing. Joe Senser's in Bloomington is the "usual" place to watch Sioux hockey games in the Twin Cities. If anyone is going somewhere else, please post.
  12. I hate considering Minnesota our biggest rival because the feeling is not mutual. It feeds into their arrogance. I'll place Wisconsin, St. Cloud, and Minnesota into the top tier of rivals, but I won't rank them. second tier: Duluth, CC, and Denver emerging: Mankato
  13. Right...they played UM-Crookston. I believe they split.
  14. SSM does play a couple of teams from the Mn State High School League (Benilde-St. Margaret's and Holy Angels).
  15. Is his dad Bob Duncan? I noticed a Bob Duncan played for the Sioux in the 1970-71 season.
  16. From their website: "Note: Attempts will be made to stop ballot-box stuffing. If it is obvious the same person is voting multiple times, and circumventing the rules, votes may be discounted, and users may be removed - at our discretion."
  17. I'm in...especially if the game takes place down here in the Twin Cities. Here's my resume (for the eventual cyber-Sioux captain): I'm a right-handed stay-at-home defenseman. Plus - I'm a die-hard Sioux fan and will battle the rodents 'til the death (or at least until happy hour) Plus - I can skate (forward and backward) Plus - I can stop (without the aid of the boards) Plus - I can pass (and sometimes even to my own team) Minuses - I can't shoot, I can't score, I notch very few assists, and I just get in the way on the power play Can I play coach?
  18. I agree that POI has the "right" to run their forum as they see fit. I also agree that it nice to have a forum apart from uscho where you can post something about your team without immediately getting ripped by 10 other opposing teams' fans. Having said that, your "the same holds true here" comment is misleading IMO. The thread that got U2bad banned is tame compared with some of threads in this forum. Obviously you haven't read anything by "JBB." JBB has 181 posts. Almost all are anti-UND and antagonistic. While a couple of his posts were removed, he still is allowed to post here. I'm not saying POI has to have the same amount of tolerance as this board, but it is fair to point out that the standards are different on the two boards. And it is also fair to point out how "thin-skinned" POI is for big-city boys.
  19. And they'll get one of those next year with David Backes. With Joseph and Stevenson returning next year, Mankato should be a definite title contender in the league race.
  20. The "ma and pa" motels would not need to buy a shuttle, they could work with the City in providing bus services to events/attractions. btw - when did the Holiday Inn become a "ma and pa" business? The cold hard reality is that if Grand Forks is not willing to create an environment for growth, population will decline, which is not good for anybody. And as someone else on this board already said, Canad Inn is a higher-end hotel. It's not going to come in and charge less than all the other motels and then jack it's price up once it's driven competition out (like a Wal-Mart). In fact, it will probably charge more than any other motel in town on day one. People need to keep in mind that this is not a zero-sum game. The motel will help in attracting conventions...which will bring more people to town.
  21. I could not agree with you more. Good post.
  22. I wouldn't even oppose a comment such as " I think Ed's on-air behavior speaks volumes about his character." I just don't think Blais should have publicly called for his job. If there's a groundswell of sentiment from Sioux fans to oust him, then so be it. I just don't think Blais should have spearheaded the effort. JMHO.
  23. I completely agree. Obviously Ed was very unprofessional and made himself look like a fool. However, for Blais to respond in public by calling for Ed's job (as the voice of Sioux football) is also unprofessional...albeit nowhere near as unprofessional as Ed's tirade.
