  1. Massive opportunity for Gophs/SCSU and UND. All three teams in the east look a step better in my opinion, but someone will emerge from our half with a great shot due to goaltending.

SCSU was the better team for most of the game in late January, but Wilcox was the difference. SCSU had not looked good until OT yesterday, hopefully if they start slow again the Gophs can pop a couple and take a lead. Wilcox has carried the them much of the year and hasn't been quite as sharp down the stretch. He can still be great like he was against Michigan to wrap up the Big Ten, so I'm hoping he finds it today.

My gut says the Big Ten was weak this year and the Gophs are going to have their hands full with SCSU and even more trouble with the Sioux if we make it. But we have Wilcox and the Gophs haven't had a goalie like him since Stauber in '89.

I'd just like to say that, with the abundance of gopher trolls who have been patrolling SS.com the past few weeks, it's refreshing to see you back on this board. Even though you root for the enemy, your level-headed input is always welcomed and appreciated.

  2. I'm all for SCSU showing that the NCHC > Big6

Plus it helps if BC makes it to the championship. Should the Sioux lose, I really don't want to be looking at a Minnesota-BC final game...I'd just have to hope the ice opens up and swallows everyone whole without getting a winner. At least if we lose to St. Cloud I could root for them against BC.

  3. Because of the age at which hockey players are drafted, it is an indication of perceived potential. Someone thinks that they may have the potential to develop and play in the NHL. Many drafted players never set foot in the NHL door. Very very few players are NHL ready when they are drafted. In college, many undrafted players can and will be better than drafted players. They may be early developers and may have already reached their full potential. Someone somewhere thinks a drafted player has a higher upside potential than an undrafted player. It does not mean the drafted player is better than an undrafted player at this point in time.

One of the eastern teams, I think it may be Union, has 16 players that will reach 24 years of age in 2014. Few, if any, of these players are drafted. But they are physically and mentally more mature than most drafted players in the college ranks. They are possibly more talented than many drafted players, at this point in time. But these 24 year olds are likely at their peak and their hockey careers will be over after college (other than recreational leagues, fatman's leagues, or broomball leagues). If they have future potential they would likely be somewhere else in hockey by this age.

It is nice to say how many draft picks some team has, but it does not indicated current talent. A college team of twenty-six draft picks, all 18 and 19 years old, is highly unlikely to win the NCAA tournament. It takes much more than just being drafted.

Haha apparently we think alike! I didn't see you post this while I was typing mine up.

  4. I hate draft picks being used as a reason this team should automatically be successful. Yes, to some extent it signifies being a good player but, more than anything, it signifies the POTENTIAL to be a great player. Having a bunch of freshman and sophomore draft picks often doesn't translate to success in the college game.

Frattin was drafted and had a respectable 15 pts as a freshman, Malone was drafted and had 3 pts. Being drafted doesn't automatically make you Toews or Parise, especially as a freshman or sophomore.

And if it was all based on draft picks, Michigan should have been in the tournament (they have 12)...this year and last year.

  5. Wow Johnny cherry picker....flies the zone every time he thinks they'll be a turnover. Reminds me of Gerbe just gambling and flying out in case the puck found a friendly stick.

Reminds me of Vanek from his days at Minnesota. He would just hang out on the opposite blue line half the game.

  6. May be the best frosh d in Sioux history. LaDue the best frosh d since Patrick. Unreal the Sioux are here with so many frosh at d

Wondered why Quinnipiac dropped off with the same firepower up front-3 struggling frosh D

Hopefully they all continue to develop steadily. Mattson was an amazing freshman D, then his sophomore season came around, and we couldn't figure out what the heck had happened to him. He's made vast improvements throughout this season, but I doubt he's where most of us thought he would be after his freshman season.

  7. Any idea why the Midwest Regional is the only one where the top seed played the later game?

Union got more rest than Providence in the East Regional.

Boston College and Minnesota, assuming they advance today, will have more time to rejuvenate and prepare than their opponent will have.

Yet Wisconsin and North Dakota played the later game in the Midwest Regional.

I'm not complaining, I'm just curious. Was it a television thing?

    Dave

Yep; that would be my guess. The other regionals have much more recognizable schools (at least outside of the college hockey world) in the 2x3 matchup, but there's a HUGE difference in recognition between Wisconsin and Ferris State or Colgate.

  8. Picked Minnesota, Notre Dame, BC, and UMass-Lowell today...would love to see Robert Morris and Denver pull off upsets though. St Cloud State? Nah.

I think Notre Dame has a better shot at beating Minnesota than St Cloud does, so I'm rooting for the golden domers.

  9. Assuming Panz has his head on straight. He took a very ill advised roughing penalty against Miami that led to their first goal on Friday.

That was my primary concern as well. Even if he's being added to the lineup to add a physical presence he still needs to keep it adequately controlled and contained. Especially with non-league officiating (it was HORRIBLE at BU), I'm nervous about that choice.

  10. I was surprised at some of these CHN picks:

    http://www.collegeho...ksRegionals.php

While both BC and UMN have very tough regionals, I still would think they are the favorites to advance to the F4. But only 4 people selected them to advance. And UW seems to be the favorite in our regional...but 2 people picked Colgate to advance? I know they've beaten FSU a couple times this season, but I don't see them reaching the F4. We'll see I guess.

The things that surprised me most:

    1) The lack of confidence in Minnesota

    2) That someone picked Mankato to come out of the regional of death.

  11. I would rather be winding through some mountains, lakes, trees, signs of life etc. to look at and keep me occuppied if I'm driving that far. The problem with a drive being so easily you can basically fall asleep is just that, you could fall asleep! Seriously though, I hate Nebraska after driving back & forth from school in Colorado Springs multiple times a year. The only semblance of a landmark is that random museum bridge right in the center of the state.

Ha! That bridge is in Kearney, where I did most of undergrad. North central Nebraska is actually incredibly beautiful, with expansive rolling hills. If you cut across South Dakota part way and then drive south through central Nebraska, it's WAY better (and doesn't add much time). The Platte River Valley, through which I-80 goes, it quite possibly the most boring drive in the US.

But, if you do prefer the 'one-turn' route, sunflower seeds are your best friend. Multiple cross-country road trips have taught me that, even if copious amounts of caffeine can't do the trick, the process of breaking open the seeds is generally enough to stay awake.

  12. What a shot short handed Oshie just had wow. Career high goals and he has 2. About to hang a hat on the wild

And Oshie got the hat trick, his first of his pro career. Career high goals, assists, and points. Plus his shootout has been nominated for "Best Moment of the Olympic Games" or something like that. And he became a dad a few weeks ago. Not a bad year for him!

  13. Bus died, waited for a bunch of cabs.

Per Jayson's twitter, they got lost twice on the way from the airport to the hotel. Then, the bus got stuck on the pavement (some sort of ledge...maybe someone can put up the picture from twitter), and they had to get a bunch of cabs for the remainder. #4thseedproblems
