  1. UND Lines:

    Pattyn Grimaldi Johnson

    Parks Caggiula MacMillan

    Gaarder Rodwell ODonnell

    Ausmus Chyzyk St Clair

    Simpson Schmaltz

    LaDue Mattson

    Stecher Thompson

    Clark

    Zane

Guess one poor game calls for whole sale changes??

Interesting. I think it's pretty telling for Mitch and others when your coach would rather have a defenseman play forward than you.

  2. 5 wins puts us very much on the bubble. Looks like most likely 14th or 15th. 15th would be the last spot in the tournament because the Atlantic Hockey champion is going to take the 16th spot. We would need there to be absolutely no upset champions in the conference tournaments in that case.

So I say lets take 6 or better still 7 or 8 :)

I would not at all be surprised if Mankato or Tech takes the WCHA tourney from Ferris. Odds are not in our favor at 14 or 15.

  3. 4:00 left...given the success of Sweden and Finland, I wonder why Norway hasn't seen better results in hockey.

I think they're too busy dominating in all the cross-country/biathlon races.

Sweden will play Finland, I think the announcers are making a bigger deal of playing Raty and Finland then there is. Russia would be the team to avoid in woman hockey.

Canada wins 3-1, Norway's goalie kept them in it.

Finland only lost to the USA and Canada 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, in games that were closer than the score indicates. Noora Raty definitely has the ability to steal games. I'm not saying they'll do it, but if anyone can pull off an upset, my money is on Finland.

  4. Don't necessarily disagree, but worth burning his redshirt over?

UND doesn't usually redshirt third string goalies, even if they don't play. He might have a long way to go to be ready to play at this level. That's the only reason I can think of for not putting him in on Saturday.

  5. Anyone else catch the debut of the Cup on Sweeney's sports report? It's right purty. He said although fans at the Ralph can see it this weekend they can't touch the Cup. That thrill reserved for NCHC's first champ.

They showed it briefly on Saturday night's webcast. I had seen pictures, but I didn't realize until then that it was about hip high. That thing is huge!

  6. Euro teams run it all the time....as long as you have nice skating defenseman it typically works as the defenseman usually has a clear skating lane. I really like that they just need to run it more.

I noticed that for at least one attempt on Saturday, Schmaltz was the first person with the puck before passing it back to a forward.

  7. I saw that exact play a few times this weekend where the guy stops and gives it back. Was at the games with a buddy and my uncle and they spotted it as well. Haven't seen it before though

Yeah, I noticed it several times on Saturday night. I think that's the method the Sabres typically try to use to enter the zone on the PP (a good team to copy, since they're dominating the NHL these days). I think the intent is to have the puck carrier enter with speed, which can sometimes be easier when it isn't your first player through the neutral zone.

  8. Congrats to the women on an amazing comeback on Saturday. Duluth went up 3-0, and UND came back to win 4-3. I believe it was the biggest comeback in program history. Tied Sunday, but lost the shootout.

I don't suppose the selection committee will take the Olympics into account come March. I doubt the girls are using it as an excuse for anything less than excellence, but it seems cruel to have your tourney chances decreased just because you have many great players on your team.

  9. Backes, Oshie, Parise

    Kesler, Brown, Kane;

    Kessel, van Riemsdyk, Pavelski;

    Pacioretty, Stastny, Callahan

    Men's lines.

Hopefully Pacioretty isn't injured. He took an awkward crash into the net Saturday night and didn't return for the remainder of the game.

  10. USA women beat Finland 3-1, with Tapani picking up the goal for Finland. Hopefully USA can beat Canada and ensure that they avoid both Canada and the Finns until the gold medal game.

Karvinen with the assist as well.

My philosophy for Olympic hockey has been this in the past (especially the men's US/CAN game in 2010):

If a non-US player must score against the US, I'd at least prefer it be a UND player.

If a UND player is playing against a team other than the US, I hope they score.

I'll take any US player scoring, but it'd be even better if it were a UND player.

Essentially, country first...UND a close second.

  11. Funny note if you missed it: Blais was talking yesterday about how he was proud of Hakstol for pulling the goalie with 5min left in the game against Denver last weekend. That's the exact thought that crossed my mind when Hak did it, "Blais would be so proud."

  12. All the more reason to keep winning.

Exactly. Until we see this first selection process, we won't know whether CHN or USCHO/Jim are right. Call me downer, but I'm just going to assume that we are whatever one is lower. The only way to fix it is to keep winning, starting with tonight.

  13. Agreed. I honestly think the boys will come out hungry tonight. I think the first and second lines will do some damage tonight. That uno goalie is terrible, we need to light him up early.

Still confused on the pp issues....they are so bad at actually setting the puck up.

The first couple power plays were pretty bad. But, they also had a beautiful set-up; Johnson just absolutely fanned on it.

  14. So Steven Stamkos is not able to make the trip to Sochi. Who will Yzerman take? Can you imagine if he passes on Martin St. Louis a 2nd time? That might get ugly in Tampa! I'd say it's down to Giroux and St. Louis, and my money's on St. Louis.

And did I also hear correctly that Mikko Koivu is not going to be able to play for Finland?

And St. Louis it is. Not that surprising considering the ridiculous point streak he's put together since being snubbed the first time.

  15. Right! True story...at my dad's navy reunion about 6 years ago, he had one of his old sailor buddies from the Boston area convinced that mail was still deliveredy by the pony express in North Dakota.

I love telling those kinds of blatant lies. When I lived in the carolinas, I had quite a few people convinced that Nebraska didn't have any paved roads, and only about 60% of people had electricity.

  16. Foreigner and Styx coming to the Target Center in July. Yea baby!

They're coming to Bangor in July as well, and I definitely plan to attend. Also includes Don Felder (from the Eagles, for you youngin's out there :p )

Juke Box Hero is one of my favorite songs. And, if I remember correctly, "Waiting for a girl like you" was written in like 16 minutes.

  17. I pretty much rant about this every February, but it is a disgrace to the game of College Hockey that the Beanpot games are not on National TV.

The Boston metropolis is arguably the greatest hotbed of college hockey and this is an unmatched winter tradition at the Gahden.

It's even more embarassing the lack of games on TV for BC in general, considering their success these past 14 years.

I agree that it should be on TV, but I can also see the other side of it. When I went to the BU/UND series in November, I was absolutely blown away at how empty the arena was (both nights). They maybe pulled 4500 fans in an arena that seats closer to 7,000. From a network standpoint, that isn't exactly promising in terms of TV viewership if the teams can't even fill up their arenas.

  18. Work is relatively slow today, so I've been perusing around www.nbcolympics.com for good stuff about the games. I decided to look at the list of all athletes, since there's a few biathlon people I know personally since I live in a major training location. Dustin Byflugien is on the list of athletes for men's hockey. I'm assuming this is just a website error? Based on the couple articles about the selection process, I don't even think he would even be considered a roster alternate in lieu of injuries.

It also lists Jamie Benn, who isn't on the roster. I guess those must be the alternates.
