  1. Hey, I just stopped by the non-UND college hockey thread to see how things were going...I guess there's nothing to see here, so I'll move along.

Exactly. I almost started the college hockey 2014-15 thread just in the hopes that the topic somehow land on hockey. I should know better around here, though...

  2. Interesting move by the Dutch yesterday that ended up paying off. With just a few seconds left in stoppage time, they switched out goalies, sending in a cold keeper to face Costa Rica in the penalty kicks. I'm assuming the fresh guy had a history of doing stellar stopping penalty kicks, and that's why they made the last second switch. At any rate, he stopped two of them, leading the Netherlands to victory.

  3. One Colorado College assistant coach was hired R.J. Enga, he's a former CC player from 91-95.

CC hired Gene Reilly as an assistant coach to round out the upheaval of staff. He's had a wide range of hockey-related jobs, but his college experience includes assistant coaching with Maine (98-01), Harvard (03-04), and Northeastern (04-08).

  4. Greene's latest contract only makes me feel even stronger about the idea that athletes make too much. For me athletes are good because they inspire many, but because of that, I feel like the players should take a pay cut and give the left over funds to student organizations. Use Greene for example; does he really need 10 million to live. Ok make that 5 million with taxes, but still. I say a million is more then enough to live on when most families much less then that and are fine. donate the other four million or 4 million to a program that supports students and be a real role model. Many athletes often times donate to past organizations such as Engelstad and his wife, but it is not always needed.

As noted, Greene set up an endowment for UND scholarships. If I remember correctly, the amount was for 50k a year. That's what he gives publicly.

I agree that athletes make a lot; no one would argue that. But just because the general public isn't aware of giving doesn't mean it isn't happening. Maybe some athletes donate funds to support students, maybe some goes to flood or tornado relief efforts or cancer research or the AIDS epidemic or a local hospital or homeless shelter. We have no way of knowing private financial affairs (other than the contract salary total), so I'm a bit hesitant to judge whether or not athletes are being 'real role models' with their finances.

  5. so Kane and Toews are both seeking $12 million per year in their new contracts. Hawks choices-keep one or keep both at that mark and destroy any further chance of winning a Cup as the team would have to be dismantled.

I wonder if they are trying to approach it together (like Parise and Suter), especially since they have the same agent. As good as Kane is, Toews' intangibles make him worth more in my opinion.

  6. And now the LA Kings re-signed Gaborik (good move) for 7 years (WHAAAT?). He's currently 32 so he now has a contract that goes until he's 39 - at $4.875M per year. Interesting decision there on the part of the Kings.

    Marian Gaborik re-signs with Kings

I thought it was an excellent move when I saw they resigned him, and then I saw the timeframe. 7 years is a heck of a long time to commit to someone that 'old'.

  7. I hate basketball, but this is a phenomenal article:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/austin-one-day-the-ball-was-going-to-stop-bouncing-it-just-happened-sooner-for-me-062314

I'm sure there are still dark days ahead for this man, but I have enormous respect for him for taking the attitude he has.

It's a good thing he opted to be drafted this year...who knows what could have happened had he played his last two years at Baylor without this getting caught at the combine check up. I think it's probably unlikely, but I would be thrilled one of the teams with the last few draft picks still drafts him.

  8. keikla just "happened to be in the neighborhood" and stopped by the church in Copenhagen to see what all the fuss was about...

I was actually in Copenhagen (one of my favorite cities, apart from the showers) in May. Had I known about the wedding, I obviously would have altered my travel plans to be there now!

  9. Not sure if you're just being facetious, but @UNDSID tweeted a congratulatory message to Jocelyne and Brent. Brad Eidsness responded and mentioned LaPoint's wedding. @UNDSID then retweeted his tweet.

Haha Eidsness' reply was exactly how I knew.

  10. Thanks for the report, Miss TMZ!

Haha for a lot of these players, we kind of watch them grow up. I think it's nice to continue to follow them a bit (note I said 'a bit', as in 'if I happen to see something online'. I'm not hiding in the bushes with a camera...yet).

Maybe I should have put it in the 'prospective recruits' thread, since any Lamoureux-Davidson babies are likely to pull on the Sioux sweater and dominate. :)

  11. On the personal side of former players, Derrick LaPoint got married in Denmark today.

And of course Brent Davidson married Jocelyne Lamoureux today as well. Pretty sure that wedding/reception brought a lot of former players into town!
