  1. Will be interesting to see if Chyzyk can play tonight.  If not, nobody else sits because Olson is the only other forward along on the trip.  If Chyzyk is good to go, I'd have to think Olson will be in.  Too many poor performances for him to not replace someone.

I thought OD's OT penalty against AFA was bad, but this was so so much worse.  It wasn't a big check that got called tight or a checking from behind in which the player turned at the last moment.  It was an act of frustration that had no other possible outcome than a penalty.  Props to Hak for benching him the rest of the game, even if it wasn't as much time as was deserved.

UND's top line is dominant, but I have to wonder if you split them up, at least temporarily.  Until Nick Schmaltz returns, we may not be able to afford having all of our best scorers on the same line.  Sure, it's only one loss against a decent SCSU team, and I expected a split anyway.  But I wouldn't be surprised to see a dramatic shuffle in the line up tonight.

  2. After watching UND against CC in Colorado Springs on the big ice, this UND team is very well suited for the big ice.  It was quite evident on the power play as the team was able to whip the puck around the zone quite quickly.  The only drawback was that on Friday night it took them a while to get the angles down on the larger sheet.  Once they did, it was quite a performance.

I get the feeling this year's CC team makes anyone look great on the big ice.

  3. In all the projected polls, I'm surprised Duluth isn't getting more love.  Sure they had a rocky start, but sweeping SCSU and UMN on back to back weekends should put them close to Top 5 in my opinion.  BU, ND, Tech, MN, UMass Lowell, Duluth, Miami?

MafiaMan - I feel like for Jamie Russell's sake, we should note that in one of those last years, Tech was absolutely annihilated by injuries.  There's only so much any coach can do with that.  Obviously Russell's record as a whole is poor, but I felt pretty bad for him that year (I'm trying to remember the specific year, but can't).

  4. This may seem strange, but I have no problem with getting beat by a good team this time of year if we've been beating so-so teams.   As long as they learn.

I was thinking the same thing.  Sure, I was bummed nothing came out of that flurry right at the end.  But I don't mind them losing to this Miami team...once.  I certainly don't think Miami is unbeatable, but I think it gave the Sioux a decent look at a better team than what we've played thus far.

  5. I dont think any of Miami's big guns (Coleman,Barber, Czarnick) had a single point last night. Not sure if thats good or bad for tonight. Hoping for the same tonight.

Kuraly had two goals and an assist, and he's definitely still considered one of their 'big guns'.

I think it's good for this team to be challenged.  Let's face it, that winning record involves a lot of 'should beat' teams.  The thing that most surprised me was how incredibly dependent the PP is on Nick Schmaltz.  I expected it to be a little rougher without him...I did not expect it to be that abysmal.

Here's hoping the boys come out and pull off a split tonight.

  6. If we stay out of the box I think we sqeak one out tonight.  Williams falls apart tonight.  5-4 good guys.  Olson scores first goal tonight.

Saturday - Miami laid it all out there Friday, come up with a dud on Saturday.  3-2 good guys.

Haha didn't you say split earlier in the week?

  7. I disagree.

I do too.  UND has looked good, but they haven't played anyone with a decent record.  Even Providence, which we considered to be a big series, is looking rather mediocre this year.  I think this is the first really challenging series that the Sioux play.  I'm guessing split.

  8. The offenses were from 2007-2012... So not a darn thing happens.

Right.  That part really just affects the record books.  The only things that actually affects the current team is this year's playoffs (including WCHA tournament) and losing one full scholarship for the next three years.

If the university self-reported the problem back during the 2011-12 season, I wonder how upfront they were with recruits regarding this issue.  Did recruits know sanctions were likely to be handed down during their time playing?  I'd be feeling pretty pissed if I were a senior on the team this year.

  9. I sure hope so however I have no idea how. Stech has been a stud and Ausmus provides UND with that stay at home mentality.

Just throwing it out there, I wonder if Stetcher could play C or W in our top 6? Great skater. Last week I saw him get caught down low with the puck and he was working the wall like a winger. Didn't look out of place whatso ever. Guy could probably play center depending on his faceoff ability.

N schmaltz- stetcher - caggs, I would give it a whirl

I just don't see it happening.  That being said, it would definitely be wing.  Playing center has quite a few more responsibilities than wing, which would make it a harder transition.

On a semi-related topic, I remember Marto switching from D to up front within the same game.  Talk about a change in mentality!
