.. As for number 1 sports goes UND hockey was the number 1 sport in the early 90's but because they were bad they were only playing to a half full arena. You never answered my question as to where were these great UND fans when the team was bad? I admit NDSU fans are fair weather and they do jump on the bandwagon but UND fans are no different, just look at what their attendance was in hockey when they were bad and now in football. Like you said when the team gets up and running their will be over 10k fans at the games but where are they now? Like I said I admit NDSU fans are fair weather but I have not heard you say the same thing about UND fans.
-
Who cares if it was the old ralph or the new ralph, when UND was not good their attendance suffered. It's true there getting 11,000 people in the seats at the new ralph but the team has been good to very good since the new ralph opened. My question is where were these great fans in the early 90's when the team was bad. Like I said every city has there fair weather and bandwagon fans including Fargo and Grand Forks
-
I don't know how old you are Darell but you must not have been at the old ralph in the early 90's when the arena (6000 seats) was not even half full for games, heck even the Gopher games was only 3/4 full. All cities have fair weather / bandwagon fans, (Fargo, Grand Forks, Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago, etc). When the teams do well the fans are there but when the team starts to lose the fans stay away. If UND football starts to win the fair weather fans will be back and the bandwagon will grow just like it did in Fargo.

Mafiaman, Your a prime example of what I was talking about regarding misconception of traveling fans. The article mentions the legion of UND fans traveling to the Twin Cities and descending on the past final fives, It made it sound like all these fans were traveling from Grand Forks to the cities for the games. I have heard multiple times at the Final five on how well UND fans travel ( and alot do travel from Grand Forks and from other cities) but you yourself said you traveled down 494 to HWY 5, which are roads in the twin ciites. A lady I used to sit by at the final five commented on all the UND fans at the Final five and how well they travel and when I asked her what part of Grand Forks she lived in her replay was "I live in Eden Prairie". Don't get me wrong, I get there are UND fans that travel but when I hear people at Final Fives or in this years case the NCHC Tournament say UND fans travel well, there not all coming from Grand Forks, they live here. I know I ruffled some feathers and I may have worded some things wrong but my point is UND fans DO travel but they ALL do not travel from Grand Forks, just ask Mafiaman and other posters on this board that live in the Twin Cities that will be attending this years NCHC tournament, I classify Minnesota fans as well, when I hear how well they travel ( ex: games in Denver) most don't travel from Minneapolis, they live in Denver.
-
Your right, maybe I should have worded it differently. All I'm saying is when I hear that certain fan bases travels well they are implying they travel from the city where the school is located in which I think is misleading. Of course there are fans that travel from Grand Forks to away games ( Final Five in the cities, Saint Cloud, Mankato, Denver) but to say all of them came from Grand Forks is hard to believe.
-
Relax Goon, All I'm saying is when there are UND fans in away arenas NOT all of them travel from Grand Forks. Like I said there are many many transplants that live in the cities, Denver, etc. As for the Omaha games, no doubt there were a lot of UND fans there but to say most of them traveled from Grand Forks is a reach IMO. At the Final five the UND fans I sat next to all of them ( around a dozen lived in suburbs of Minneapolis)
-
I always think the word 'traveling fan base" is overrated. Case in point, there are a lot of UND fans that travel to the final five but with 20,000 UND alumni living in the twin cities I wouldn't doubt most of them travel from the suberbs. Same thing with Denver, there are a lot of North Dakota transplants that live in the Denver area. No doubt, there are fans that travel from Grand Forks I just think the majority of fans at the away arenas live in those cities. You can say the same thing about when Minnesota plays in CC or Denver, there are alot of Gopher fans in the arena but I willing to bet most of them live in the Denver area.

A guy I went to High School with (Fargo Shanley) went to St. Joes parochial school in Moorhead. When he went to Shanley instead of Moorhead high the High school coach for two years was recruiting him to transfer from Shanley to Moorhead to play football.
-
Funny thing is, you never here a PUBLIC school fan admit they recruit, they say only its done by the Private schools. Even know you give them multiple examples of public school recruiting.
-
You can add: Elk River hockey, Apple Valley wrestling, St. Paul Central girls ball, Moorhead Spuds Football ( at least they did when I was in high school), Fargo North ( my sister was recruited by the girls bball coach to get her to transfer from Fargo Shanley to Fargo North). Point is some Public schools recruit.
-
And we all know public schools don't recruit also.

Watch the replay again of the handshake, as soon as Blood and Rau shook hands Blood immediately yanked him out of the line. If Rau said something to Blood during the handshake he must be the fasted talker of all time. Like I said before, Blood pulled Rau out of the line because Rau chirped at him During the game. If Blood had a problem with that then settle it DURING the game. We can go back and forth on this all day but unless you or me or anybody else was next to Rau, Blood, Wheeler or Finley in the line we will never know what really happened.
-
I can also play this game Goon, I heard from reliable people ( family members ) that no words were exchanged in the handshake line. It had to do with some smack talking that occurred DURING the game.
-
UND fans, Without proof, are going to say Wheeler mouthed off in the handshake line, Gopher fans ,Without Proof, are going to say he didn't mouth off in the handshake line. So, unless someone has audio of Wheeler mouthing off it's going to be a he said - she said. Who knows why Finley pulled him out of the line, maybe something was said during the game or something else led up to this, most likely will never know. In the end it was an ugly incident that should never have happened.
-
Do you have audio of this? I'm sure your reply will be " I know of a guy who was on the ice and heard the Gophers running their mouth". Well, I know a guy also and said no such thing happened.
-
Very much agree with this post. However, will other people agree. Will rival fan bases of Minnesota cheer against the USA because Lucia is the coach or will they Cheer for USA because it is our nation. I seem to remember some posters here were happy when Toews scored on Frazee and could care less about the nation vs nation. I know Toews played for UND and Frazee played for Minnesota but at that game it was Canada vs USA.

Does anyone in the cities know if Sensers will have the games on this weekend.

I heard the two UND flags on the two balcony's was staged. A security guard outside the apartment building told us that ESPN staff members asked permission of the occupants of the apartment room if they could hang the flags on their balcony to get the crowd riled up. That is why when cameras showed a shot of the flags on the big screen screen and the announcers made reference to the crowd about the flags the crowd got all stirred up. The reason why nobody was around the flags was because the apartment room was filled with NDSU fans and every time they came out on the balcony they were getting screamed at to take it down, so the people quit coming out on the balcony because of all the crap they were getting by the crowd.

Ouch Rick, Mariucci just put you in a box with the rings comeback.

Wouldn't non Bemidji State ticket holders be able buy tickets today if they knew the code. I can't see how ticketmaster would know if you are a BSU season ticket holder or not.
-
Bemidji State is having a pre-sale for tickets this friday, does anyone know the code for this sale?

Besides Professional sports, cities like Fargo, Grand Forks, St.Cloud, etc have pretty much the same activiies that Minneapolis has, just not the quantity. If you would move these cities to Minneapolis / St. Paul they would be your typical suberb there. People in the twin cities don't realize that if Fargo was 75ft to the east (approx. width of the red river) it would be in Minnesota thus making it the 3rd largest city in the state.
-
Ok, I'll bite. You might want to ask all the UND alumni living in Fargo why they moved there.

Since you like to use the word fact so much, here is a fact: In sports that both schools compete in NDSU has won 22 National Championships compared to 4 National Championships that UND has. Even if you include the 7 titles UND'S hockey team has ( a sport NDSU doesn't even have) NDSU still has 11 more National titles than UND has. Not too bad for a Agriculure, Applied Sciences and Home EC school.
-
22>4 Nuff said (22 National tiles for NDSU versus 4 National titles for UND in sports that the two schools compete in). And yes Hayduke, the 7 National titles the UND hockey team is a great accomplishment.
