  1. It's possible that such a stipulation was in place, but has lapsed - you generally can't dictate future control of property forever into the future. The rule against perpetuities in the US states you can't control property more than 21 years past a life in being , so such a stipulation may have been in place for, say, the lives of his children, but may now be expired.
  2. First, it's not profiteering if they have no choice. Second, Sioux stuff is typically now worth more to other fans or on eBay than its original purchase price, unless you've already worn it out. Third, almost all teams rebrand from time to time to renew interest in a team, but it's a rare "fan" who considers his older "throwback" jersey obsolete. Fourth, you bought any Sioux merchandise willingly and in an arm's length transaction because that's what you wanted, not because there was some 50 year guarantee of future use or relevance of the message imprinted thereon. Fifth, VW outright cheated government regulations (not to mention the environment), and were blatantly dishonest. The University, in contrast, has gone beyond what most would consider prudent in trying to retain the "Sioux" nickname and logos.
  3. Many of the problems we've seen in the past year regarding selecting a new nickname and choosing a logo stem from the methodology, not from the intent of the people involved. If you ask one person, or a few people, with talent to come up with a nickname and a logo, you can easily end up with something unique and distinctive (Roghriders probably came closest among the finalists to fitting this bill). However, if you ask 1000 people off the street to agree, you'll invariably end up with Eagles, Bulldogs, or the like, which is what happened here. In my opinion, more of the blame for the overall mediocrity of the new nickname and logo lie with those who defined the process (and failed to show any leadership themselves in implementing a process likely to produce a quality result) than with the people who voted in the nickname process.
  4. It's always something with some people. He's the kind of guy that made all other teams hate the Gophers when they were still a good team in a good conference instead of the fifth best team in their state. Years ago they complained that we had Canadians on our team, then they got a couple kids from North Dakota and an Austrian, and couldn't complain about that anymore. Then they picked fights and lost, so complained about getting beat up by cherry picking a few single people's actions over decades. Today the team plays clean, physical hockey (20th in penalty minutes this year), and all they can do is regurgitate their same old rhetoric. You would think someone who is trying so hard to escape his own trainwreck of a past would know the difference.
  5. I would join the Big 10 without hesitation if it were clear that it wasn't a hockey-only thing forever. Every other school in the big 10 is a large research institution, and an affiliation with that conference could only help UND's national reptuation for those of us who work outside the NHL for a living.
  6. Gallery is posted at: https://flic.kr/s/aHskwxvf29 Note the blocker save in photo 9018 in particular - the shot that was judged as inconclusive. John
  7. How about this for Fighting 'Hawks?
  8. I wonder if they don't have a little extra gas in the tank tonight after a locker room speech about stepping up for those who are out injured.
  9. Well, it shouldn't look like the logo of the other team with a hawk for a nickname in North Dakota... and, it shouldn't look like the logo of the other team with a hawk for a nickname in the NCHC... and it shouldn't look like the logos of the other couple teams in the Big Sky conference with generic-looking raptors as mascots... Did anybody do any research before deciding this would be a good idea for a nickname?
  10. I think I'd take the best logo available at this point, to help salvage a weak nickname. It would be fun if Bennett Brien ended up providing something great, but if the best logo comes from a designer in New York, Bratislava, etc., I'm still all for using it.
  11. A little background to this: 15 or 20 years ago, the announcers used to say "Please welcome your Husky Hockey Cheerleaders" and other such things, which set up an obvious play on words with its double meaning. I remember UND crowds back then chanting "she's not that fat" in response, which I think was at least fairly clever. Most of the chants from this weekend, on the other hand, seemed no more clever than the guy who tried to scream over the performer while singing the national anthem. I'm not saying that people don't have a right to chant them, just that some of the chants don't represent the fan base as well as they could if they put a little more thought into it.
  12. Why not call it 5 min for contact to the head? Who's ever heard of a 5 min interference penalty? May have been deserved, but pretty sketchy officiating.
  13. Oh, don't think I haven't. In reality, it's probably even necessary to distinguish us from other Hawk hockey teams like those cake eaters that are a thorn in the side of the Mighty Ducks. Best part is, Fighting 'Hawks and a logo such as this likely wouldn't need University approval to use:
  14. I've already got an idea or two for a Fighting 'Hawks logo:
  15. Just some ideas for a unique, original logo befitting the new name:
  16. Why make people sit through a video? You're just proving you have no idea what people want. Didn't you listen to the woman who introduced you?
  17. That's exactly why they had to add another round of voting (after screwing things up by changing the rules based on the results of the first vote that saw Nodaks eliminated). They created a situation in which the winner wasn't likely to have support from at least half of the voters, and knew that such a result would breed even more discontent. How it took them so long to figure that out is another matter entirely. The whole process has been amateur hour at best.
  18. If we do become the Hawks, does that mean we're all cake eaters? At least we'll have Gordon Bombay to blame (along with Hak) for our recent championship drought.
  19. Having a nickname with an Indian name is one thing, having a nickname that is something that Indians knew about but isn't directly associated with them is quite another. I'd say OP is trolling/exaggerating to make a point, but I can't quite figure out what that would be...
  20. No worries, just joking around while trying to support my choice ; )
  21. No North Dakota "Roughrider" award for Nobeer
