NCAA To Sanction UND if School Does Not Adopt New Nickname
The Sicatoka replied to Benny Baker's topic in UND Nickname
Love your idea , but, it was the STATE of SC's display of the flag so the NCAA decided to boycott the State. The schools in the State got swept up by that. In the UND case, it would be UND doing it so only UND would face the consequences. -

Yeah, but then folks would shorten it to 'mongs, and someone would mishear it as Hmong and we'd be toast all over again. -
Again, probably Angela Lansbury.

(First, folks, this is about Twitter and Facebook, not politics. Thank you.) I recall a recent, what I would call repugnant, comment by "The Donald" regarding a Fox anchor. It hit the Twit and the 'book and I was sure The Donald was cooked because of the (faux) "outrage" exploding there. Instead, The Donald has shot up even higher in the polls. I don't view the Twit or the 'book as much more than the end stool at the corner bar. Lots of loud aggrandizing can be witnessed, but little comes of it. -

If the First Amendment mattered to the NCAA, or came into play at all in this conversation, we wouldn't be having this conversation. -

Yes. That's part of it. That's called "Prudence", also described as wisdom, the ability to judge between actions with regard to appropriate actions at a given time. It along with Justice, Temperance, and Courage make up the four cardinal virtues. -

And this sums up the fear of mine when I said "control what's yours to control." The long process (legal, institutional) and cooling off delays have worn many down. (Nothing personal, Mafia, but you exposed the sentiment.) This is exactly the play, the tactic, the folks that got the old nickname removed used, namely grind grind grind. I fear many have reached this same point, ceding what is theirs to control (and what should've been taken care of anywhere from 3 to 8 years ago) to the folks that play the long game (planning to win the war of attrition). Leigh Jeanotte and his minions are smirking. They mastered the tactic. When the battle was lost those of us who care about UND Athletics shouldn't have run away demanding time to negotiate further (with the unwilling) or "cooling off periods" but instead run towards demanding full control of an immediate solution. Well some of us did, but were disregarded. -
Delay will be good for UND because ______________________. (Please limit your essays to 250 words or fewer.)

... in your opinion. Others may even say that about a SIX option list. Or a two option list. If we're expecting everyone to come away from this happy, we're somewhere between confused and delusional. -

Why do you say that? Something new beyond the Goon article (two weeks ago) and the GFH article (last week) that I'm missing? -

You have to shoot to score. How many "shots" did he take by passing to his brother last season? -

A wise mentor pointed out to me that a regional school has done just fine with a Looney Tunes "wabbit" logo and "down the food chain" nickname for many year. -
The first "no nickname" rally happened after the committee cut it. Why rally for something that's not an issue yet?
-
I was going to go with "duck opener."

Fast food restaurants are not an economy. Getting Grand Sky populated, that would be an economy. Getting that new fertilizer plant built and running, that would be an economy. Finding a couple new manufacturers for the industrial park, that would be an economy. Do those three and the fast food joints will take care of themselves. First things first.

Last minute? They had fundraising in place. They chartered a bus to cross the state to bring people in. Unfortunately, it seems the total number of attendees could've ridden out the rain inside the bus.

I had to Google "LARP". To put this into words that make sense to my vocabulary: The "no nickname" rally got beat by a Grand Forks dungeons and dragons meeting. Ouch.

I see the quote in the article from Archie Fool Bear about how the 1969 ceremony is like a Catholic baptism. Not a good comparison. Why? Having, living Catholic beliefs is just as un-PC as having a Native based nickname, maybe worse. Either way, the media is not sympathetic at all to either idea. Sorry Archie, the media will award you no sympathy points for that. They may even negate you harder. Signed, A Catholic

10 Year Anniversary of Nickname Fight
The Sicatoka replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in UND Nickname
We recently passed the ten year mark since the NCAA's decision. But we are eight years into having NO sealed documents in the case. http://www.inforum.com/news/3823213-documents-regarding-nickname-lawsuit-unsealed-years The information is out there.- 19 replies

NCAA To Sanction UND if School Does Not Adopt New Nickname
The Sicatoka replied to Benny Baker's topic in UND Nickname
The issue today: What is best for UND? A nickname or no nickname? I'll state my belief: a nickname. Why? I see the benefits that NDSU has from the multiple marketing options (NDSU, Bison, spelling out North Dakota State University, different logos, art or word marks). They can target different audiences and different media using all the resources available to them. I see all the words written out in some ads. I see just the cow head in others. I see the letters "NDSU" in some places and the word Bison in others. They have options and use them to target demographics and media platforms. Not having all the possible resources and options handcuffs UND from what I see. We used to have all the options and they were used well so clearly they were at minimum useful if not necessary. Our best logo right now is mostly misrecognized as that of a school in Indiana. If we just put the words "North Dakota" on something do people know "U of" or "State of" without additional context? (Say "Bison" and it is clear.) The reasons I can find for not having a new nickname and logo: - the options we have stink - stick it to the NCAA - I don't want one so I can keep saying the old name If you believe one or more of those, that's fine. We've beat those topics again and again. But in the end it comes down to: What is best for UND? Why would not having all the options other NCAA schools have going forward be a good thing. -

The historic record? A cadre of likeminded folks within the NCAA, who didn't like one category of team nicknames, had the power to take most of them out, and did. That's the key triggering event, the cause. After that it's effect. -
My take: 17th Avenue needs an underpass (no ramps) like 40th Avenue in Fargo. That would be a big help. You don't have enough space for ramps between there and the Demers ramps but being able to get west of I-29 there would be useful both for Alerus Center and the city in general. They probably don't want to put ramps on at Merrifield because that road is considered the southern edge of the Grand Forks flood control system. Look at the height of that road and how even South Washington (Hwy 81) has to rise up to cross it. That's your clue. They want the overpass on a section line (main arterial) road. They do want the overpass inside the flood protection. Given that they have two options from 32nd Ave to Merrifield Road: 47th Ave or 62nd Ave. There is a pipeline corridor that crosses I-29 about one mile north of the Merrifield overpass. Yup, right about 62nd Ave. You don't want to have to deal with that. So, you're left with 47th Avenue.
