  1. They're most likely "institutional support." And be caresul on that topic. The sword has two sharp edges. (NDSU is looking at some in their minor sports is what I've read.)
  2. I think it would never happen. The rule isn't as much about football as basketball (and keeping a team from "loading up" for a season).
  3. Reviewing Article I, Section 8, "commerce among the several States" is something that Congress has Constitutional power over. If "commerce among the several States" doesn't define what the NCAA is doing what does? Yes, this is in the realm of the enumerated powers of Congress. Step up and do something is what I'd say. I guess I'd rather him take a stand than appear to duck.

  5. The roster as of today: F (11): Oshie, Toews, Kozek, Duncan, Kaip, Watkins, Porter, Fabian, Foyt, Martens, Miller D (7): Bina, Radke, Chorney, Jones, Lee, Finley, Alexander G (3): Parise, Lamoureux, Walski That's 21 on today's roster. The folks I see projected for this fall are: F: Darcy Zajac, Chay Genoway, Chris VandeVelde. That's 24 (and only 14 forwards). Most times fall camp has a 26 or 27 man roster with 15 forwards, 8 (or 9) defense, and 3 goalies. Toss in that there are a ton of open questions right now: - Robbie Bina: A clean bill of health is one thing. Game ready is another. I don't question his abilities; I worry about how he'll respond to the first full-speed game hit. He's been through a lot. - Eric Fabian: Six month recovery for a major knee injury isn't that long. If anyone is mentally tough enough to do the physical work required however, it is Eric Fabian. - Will the NHL Draft shorten depth at forward further? - And what of this continual buzz of Jordan Parise considering signing? Yes, UND has signed letters of intent from Jake Marto and Derrick LaPoint, but defense isn't the issue this fall from what I see. (I suspect it will be in fall of 2007 however.) With that in mind, letting those two develop in the USHL in 2006-2007 would make good sense. Michael Forney has little (if any) junior experience. Plus, his post-HS season hockey this spring was cut short by injuries. He's a big question mark right now (health-wise). Will he be ready for a WCHA season this fall or would the USHL be better for him also? Then there's Evan Trupp. When I first heard of him I thought "Another smallish forward?" With Duncan and Spirko already in that smallish playmaker mold in place it didn't make sense. With Sparky not returning, now I wonder if the plan to have Trupp in the BCHL in 2006 (after a solid rookie BCHL season in 2005) may have changed. Still, even under my thoughts (Trupp comes now), that's only 25. Sure you have Bina and Genoway who can play either forward or defense on gameday, but you don't have the numbers to run a full practice under the systems Hakstol has used. The conversation about goaltender could get sticky. Let's let that play itself out. Then again, I guess that's the beauty of having two guys who'd be #1 goalies on 90% of NCAA squads. When I look and think about all of that I'm wondering what the rest of the plan over the summer is for Hak and Staff: - Is my speculation of Trupp coming now that Sparky left accurate? - Do they have a plan in case Parise signs and jumps? - Are they looking at inviting a forward (or two even?) to walk on or will they bring Forney now? Tune in again tomorrow for "As the Roster Turns".
  6. Hallstrom admits he had Miles going to UNC-Whichever in that column.
  7. I didn't say anything about "in" a particular sport (note the "and" between the "name schools" thought and the "BB RPI" thought). Quite simply: Montana or IUPUI? Montana State or Centenary?
  8. Dear Earl Pomeroy, I'll remember this on November 7, 2006. And I'll remind many, many others. Signed, A voter in North Dakota PS - Tell your buddy Kent Conrad the same.

  10. The Mid-Con, with the recent loss of Chicago State, will probably be looking for a team or teams. However, the Mid-Con would leave schools like the SUs with two problems: 1. the Great West for football (with only five schools in GWFC) 2. a league without "name" schools* and a lower BB RPI (compared to Big Sky) * for comparison Mid-Con: Centenary, IUPUI, UMKC, Oakland, Oral Roberts, Southern Utah, Valparaiso, Western Illinois Big Sky: Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, Weber State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado Great West Football: NDSU, SDSU, Southern Utah, Cal-Poly, Cal-Davis
  11. My question remains: Why are fans of not just one but two DI-AAs so concerned about what a little ol' DII (with alleged budget problems, but with arguably the best facilities package already built) is doing? Are things that slow in the great and wonderous DI-AA-land? Or is there more to this? Could it be that NDSU and SDSU know that (a) a conference is now nearly make or break to future schedules and budgets, and (b) the best option around might be the Big Sky and it takes UND to make that deal*? If UND was as bad off as I read here from some fans of the SUs wouldn't those be rejoicing in the realm of not having to deal with head-to-head competition from UND for glory and all other things that come with DI-AA? Say what you will about my hypothesis, but there must be some reason behind all the attention from fans of the SUs. If not this theory of mine, then what? * 12 teams.
  12. Ah yes, "Sooners", meaning the people who stole land from American Indians before ("sooner") than it was legal to steal land from American Indians. Of course that's not "hostile and abusive."
  13. Yes, and it goes right out the window unless all said "offensive-type" monikers are gone. What good is it to the person who dislikes them all if UND's is gone but Florida State's remains? The NCAA's "for all" test and goal just collapse with that person.
  14. That's from "the most detailed, publicly available database of college athletic department financial information ever assembled."
  15. PS - To me, $100k sounds like money for the AG's office to oversee some private firm working the case on contingency.
  16. Did they table this because maybe the tribal chair didn't want it coming to a vote (for fear it may not go his way)?
  17. I'm amazed at how much non-UND interest there is in UND's budget. And I still would like to see a paper in the region get all of the data and put it out there (at least for the public universities). Let's see how these budgets are done.
  18. I'm not an attorney and I don't even play one on TV. However, I can read the NCAA by-laws and what those say is that legislation (like this) is supposed to come from an Association-wide vote. (Read more here.) UND pays to be an NCAA member. The by-laws serve as a contract. I don't see Constitution or anti-trust as prime issue as much as I see possible breech. Prove breech; go from there.
  19. NDSU will be raising student fees for this this fall.
  20. I'd hope a Big Ten I-A school would be able to deal with a team with a potential 233 pound defensive end. I suspect UNI will have to deal with ends heavier than that on September 7.
  21. I know. They couldn't say a word about TR and the Rough Riders because he is regarded as the original founder of the NCAA (or at least the force behind its creation). If they had a problem with TR they'd have to look themselves in the mirror too. It'd be right in the NCAA's face.
  22. There's always still Osh..(insert sounds of someone billy-clubbing me over the head and me hitting the floor here)
