UND Fan Posted November 26, 2006 Share Posted November 26, 2006 In many recent years (including this year) about this time, UND's swimming teams are ranked 1st or 2nd in the country. Yet, we normally finish 3rd-5th at the end of the season - often a long ways behind the champion. Any idea why we are consistently ranked so high early in the season? Please don't take this question to infer that I am disappointed that we can't win the NCAA title. Coaches fill out their best dual meet line up under the following entry guidelines: Three athletes may score per individual event. One athlete may score in two (2) individual events and both relays. Select one medley (200 or 400) and one freestyle (200, 400 or 800) relay. Diving: Enter your divers' best six dive score. This system only works if all the coaches in division II fill out the form. All of them do not. Drury, 03, 05, 06 Champs on the men's side, has not filled out the form. Also, the NCAA Championships are an Invite not a dual. Some teams can be better in duals then in invites just based on depth or lack of depth and how fast the number one swimmer or a group of swimmers are. Hope this helps to clarify. Some of the posters believe that UND's men's team has a much better chance at a National Championship this year: more number one swimmers in more events. "It was pretty scary," said Ferreria. "I didn't think a place could be so cold. People here are really nice and friendly, so it was really good. Since Sampaio became head coach in the 2001-02 season, North Dakota has won 24 individual NCAA titles, more than doubling its previous total of 23 throughout the team's history. The men's squad has finished at least third in the team standings in each of the last five years with a second-place finish in 2002, while the women have placed at least seventh during that time, including fourth place last year. Ferreria knows there is some tough competition ahead, but he is optimistic about his team's chances at the Division II Championships on March 14-17 at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, N.Y. There are 42 total events for men and women to include the preliminary events. The UND men finished last year in third place with 402 points. I would say we are slightly ahead of last years pace but I don't know if Drury can be beat. I suppose it depends if our strong events are still to come or have already passed. GO SIOUX!!! How many times have we been runners-up? I'm not surprised. UND has an awesome S&D team for both men and women, but the conference is relatively weak. Nebraska-Omaha is the only team that can give UND any competition for women. The independent conference (which has now disbanded) had Drury, Truman, and Missouri-Rolla (all of whom are typically in the top 10 at nationals every year) all in the same conference. NCC, on the other hand, has teams like St. Cloud, Moorhead, and Metro, who rarely make an appearance at the national level. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
