GeauxSioux
Smirken Chicken Damn skippy. I hope UND can get whatever they can out of the NCAA. Bunch of hypocritical political terrorists, they is.
GeauxSioux
Free Republic I read an article about this controversy a couple of years ago...the American Indian activists who were complaining were not Sioux. The more I look the more I see public opinion on our side. Don't you find it a little funny that the NCAA based in Indiappolis, Indianna, has a problem with indian names? I wish they would enforce minimum academic standards among the players and not worry about BS like the names of teams. Who elected them king? GeauxSioux
Rather than starting a a new thread for Blogs on this issue, I'll post this blog here. The link, for some reason took a while to load, but it was a good read regarding McMurry deciding to cave into the NCAA. McMurry and the NCAA First, let me say that I would've fought that ruling to the end. I would've waged a PR and legal battle like nothing the NCAA has ever seen. This could've been the classic David and Goliath story. The NCAA imposed its will on a small school with little financial or political capital despite having allowed other (always larger) schools with Indian mascots to keep their mascots. The NCAA took its action without any investigation into the acts and practices of McMurry to honor Native Americans, without any regard to the history of McMurry's mascot, without any regard to the 83-year history the school has of honoring Native Americans, and without any regard to how important that tradition is to those of us who have walked McMurry's halls. To say the least, I think the NCAA is a pretty disgusting and offensive organization, and I hope I one day get to see them regret their decision. They disgust me. I hope this blogger gets to see that day.

Chief Illiniwek Supporter
One other blog: http://illiniwek.typepad.com/the_chief_per...njunction_.html This is written by a former Chief Illiniwek. BTW, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the tradition of Chief Illiniwek last weekend. Several former Chiefs made it back to campus, including one gentleman who's 92 years old. Fetch
What I find the MOST hypocritical thing of all is one of the NCAA biggest sponsors is PONTIAC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Pontiac http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_%28disambiguation%29 I see absolutely no difference in using the Name Sioux, as the NCAA or GM using Pontiac, when done with Respect (& we sure do) NC$$ does it for Money & I love my Pontiac Montana
PCM
I take every opportunity I can to remind the NCAA of its hypocricy.

r2opus2
This is somewhat off topic (although narrowly), but does anyone know what the "Force of the North" is all about. To me, it seems someone is trying to slip this phrase into sporting events so everyone gets used to hearing it, then suddenly we will see a new name adopted. I don't think the new Sioux Football posters have the phrase "Fighting Sioux" on them anywhere, but Force of the North is along the top in large letters. Anyone else feel the same or know what's up? jimdahl
The oddest thing to me about this recurring "Force of the North" conspiracy theory is that people seem to believe that if the name is changed, it's going to occur in the dark of night by athletic department fiat. If UND reaches the point where they decide to change the name, they will definitely engage students, staff, faculty, and alums in choosing a new name, thereby giving them a stake in the new name. To do anything else would be catastrophically idiotic from the perspective of public relations and maintaining good will.
r2opus2
I realize that, but I do find it interesting how the phrase is used and am a little suspicious that the powers that be are maybe trying to get everyone used to something other than "Sioux". That is my point....

Foisting a new nickname on the athletic teams without any consultation or discussion among students, faculty, staff, alumni and athletes would be the height of idiocy. I just hope that if the do change it they come here and ask people on SS.com, because I know that there is a number of people that would like to see the name become "Calvary". I for one do not want to see them change it, butif they do "Go Calvary".

PCM
I hope they ask everybody so we can end up with the RedHawks or the RiverHawks, or better yet the Red River Hawks. I don't know if that name would pass muster with Myles Brand. He said on one of the "Monday with Myles" shows at the NCAA Double-A Zone blog that any nickname with the word "red" in it meant the name was related to scalping. Now, there are quite a few teams that use the word "red" as part of their nicknames, but I suspect that Myles would apply his own unique interpretation to UND, especially if certain people complained. If UND said the reference to red was intended to honor communisim, Myles would probably be okay with it.

If UND said the reference to red was intended to honor communisim, Myles would probably be okay with it. How about the Red Commies to honor Commadore, our illustrious ex-Fighting Sioux, Stanley Cup winning hockey player? Our logo could be a red wig? Not a scalp, a wig! Or the Black Eagles to honor Eddie, our illustrious, black haired, ex-Fighting Sioux, Stanley Cup winning hockey player? Our logo could be an eagle? Not a sacred eagle like you see displayed all over Native American owned casinos, just a regular eagle. OK, Name Changers, it's just a joke! You know, ha ha, joke? I don't seriously consider changing the name and logo EVER!
