PCM Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 From the Deseret Morning News: Ute Tribe is vexed over U. scholarships One year ago, University of Utah President Michael Young noted the "mutually respectful" relationship with the Ute Indian Tribe when he appealed NCAA restrictions on the school's nickname Quote
PartTime Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Interesting. Kinda points out their "What's in it for us?" way of thinking and how their opinion/approval changes depending on it. Good post. Quote
Slap Shot Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 I don't want to tell anyone how they should "run their tribe", but it's a bit ridiculous to in essence hold the school hosstage in exchange for their support of the nickname. It's either, "hostile and abusive" or it's not. I'm not saying a school should not show loyalty toward a tribe, but at the same time agreeing to not protest a school's usage of a nickname shouldn't change when the wind blows. Quote
Sioux-cia Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 It's either, "hostile and abusive" or it's not. That's correct. Schlorships, money, buildings, outreach, etc. are not the barometers with which to measure 'hostile or abusive' anything. Quote
Shawn-O Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 That's why this needs to be fought in the courts. Either all the nicknames go, or none of them go. It smacks of blackmail. I know that's not the PC thing to say, but that's how I feel about it. Quote

Agreed, now if only the NC$$ would dispense with the fiction it currently maintains, and come down on one side of the issue for keeps. This only makes me wonder what FSU promised the Seminoles too. I know that's not the PC thing to say, but that's how I feel about it. I agree. The NCAA either is ok for "all" or "none". You can not have a middle ground on this issue any longer IMHO after reading this article. Watch the NCAA come out and say, " Universities have the right to self govern" And steer clear. PCM, Are you on UND's legal team?? A very good article thanks for posting it!!! Quote
Tommiejo Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 For starters eventhough i'm a GATOR & can't stand FSU I will say this though with all due respect. The NC$$ or should I say today's NAZI'S ain't going to trying anything with FSU because when this all came down in the first place FSU & all the other Universities in the State of Florida we're ready to battle the NCAA in court & it was going to taken up on capital hill until the NCAA back peddle. Eventhough this is happening in UTAH I will say thanks PCM for posting this and let's go get those dirtbags (the NCAA). SIOUX FAN SINCE 1973. Quote
PCM Posted September 18, 2006 Author Posted September 18, 2006 PCM, Are you on UND's legal team?? I'd rather that they put people on the legal team who actually know something about the law. Quote
HockeyMom Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 You guys are right- it should be all or none. Hopefully the courts see it that way too. Quote
jloos Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Jesse Jackson has been getting away with blackmail for years. Corporations happily shell out millions to the Rainbow/Push coalition when threatened with being labled "racist". Jesse has shaken down more people than the entire Gotti family, yet the government turns a blind eye. When it comes to being labled racist, the government turns tail and runs. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Jesse has shaken down more people than the entire Gotti family, yet the government turns a blind eye. John Gotti can only wish he had a racket so good. Quote
BobIwabuchiFan Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Why not push the government to stop recognizing/allowing the NCAA to be the social arbitrator for what is right or wrong...This will not be solved by a case in the courts because the courts will change. I recommend continuing to ask Earl Pomeroy why he won't vote for the legislation and engage the newspapers again to bring up the issue again. It is when we expose the PC aspect of this to direct light that it becomes apparent how arbitrary this really is! BOBIWABUCHIFAN PS I hope the case starts soon because my donation shouldn't have to go to more talking about the issue, but rather court action against the NCAA ASAP. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 From UND's August 30, 2005 letter to Komrad Catalyst Myles Brand: If the use of a nickname is dependent on approval of a particular Tribal Council, in our case this is complicated by the fact that there are many Sioux Tribes. Approval could be withdrawn by one Council, then reinstated by another. The NCAA went down a very slippery slope in indicating that because there are no Aztec Tribes, somehow Quote
