The Sicatoka Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 What's this noise I hear about UND going DI? I believe that's the first "if" in the scenario talked about here. Quote
MplsBison Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Question: why are men required to wear full helmet/facemask but the women are only required to wear goggles? Quote
The Sicatoka Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 Question: why are men required to wear full helmet/facemask but the women are only required to wear goggles? Because those are the rules. The men propel the ball much harder; and, much more contact and use of the crosse to dislodge the ball is allowed in the mens game, especially up high. In the womens game, getting any part of your crosse within a foot (?) of an opponent's head is a penalty. And they call it. However, it's my expectation that you'll see helmets (insurance issues) in the womens NCAA game sooner rather than later. The precedent for women in helmets in the NCAA was already set by hockey and softball. (I'm surprised WLax has held out this long.) Quote
MplsBison Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Well, anything associated with the east more than likely as a bunch of BS tradition tied to it that takes forever to break. I suppose wearing a full helmet isn't "pretty enough" or something. I was going to mention that women's hockey has full helmets but you beat me to it. I wouldn't my daughter play Lacrosse with only goggles, period. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted June 25, 2006 Author Posted June 25, 2006 It gets stranger (like you'd expect less from the NCAA). The NCAA writes its own mens lacrosse rulebook. It uses US Lacrosse's rulebook for the womens NCAA game. http://www1.ncaa.org/eprise/main/playingru...;PreviewState=0 More interesting? US Lax didn't mandate 'protective eyewear' for the womens game until 2005. Quote

star2city Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 When UND obtains DI conference affiliation, would really like to see a press release like this one from the University of Cincinnati, Strategic Positioning, Maximizing Opportunities Prompts Change in UC Athletics CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics is realigning its sports offerings to more effectively address the evolving shifts in the popularity of women's sports. With a growth rate at the high school level of 290 percent over the last decade, the number of female athletes participating in girl's lacrosse has skyrocketed to almost 52,000 according to a recent survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations. What this translates to is a much greater need for opportunities at the college level which UC Athletics will address by adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport. Concurrently, the University of Cincinnati has elected to discontinue its women's rowing program at the conclusion of its traditional season in the spring of 2007. With Cincinnati, Florida, and South Carolina all having announced the addition of women's lacrosse past six months, the number of collegiate women's teams may soon double the number of men's teams. No BCS-type school has added men's lacrosse in a number of years, in spite of the growth of that sport. A headline down the road for UND (?): Strategic Positioning, Maximizing Opportunities Prompts Changes in UND Fighting Sioux Athletics, Men's Lacrosse and Women's Synchronized Skating to be added as Varsity Sports Quote
The Sicatoka Posted January 20, 2007 Author Posted January 20, 2007 I've always tempered my lacrosse musings with "If UND were to go DI ..." Well, that "if" is no more. And now Canadian schools (lax is the "other" national sport of Canada) are a real possibility in the NCAA. If should be an interesting ride. Quote
MplsBison Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I noticed that they also have women's rugby. I wonder how many American high school girls would do that? Ouch! Quote

star2city Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 With the Minnesota State High School League sanctioning lacrosse recently, the schools sponsoring lacrosse are almost exclusively Twin City based. When an outstate school district adds lacrosse, another barrier will be broken. Mankato schools: adding lacrosse? Quote

Dropping the Men's Swimming is more of a surprise than the loss of lacrosse. It was non-scholarship and been a sport at Butler since 1928. It looks as though the Horizon will be looking for another swim team. Quote

It seems as if swimming & diving has the best chance to find a DI conference home early on, and hopefully continue to be a successful program as well. They will most likely be the two programs that are designated to qualify for the post-season early. While the Horizon would be much more attractive, I'd still prefer to forge an early association with the Mid-Con, which could also use swimming members, to strengthen our chances of getting all of our teams into that leauge. That is of course only if the Big Sky doesn't add UND. Quote

star2city Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I know next to nothing about DI swiming other than Auburn pretty much kicks everyone's asses. It'll be interesting to see how UND fits in with the big boys. Auburn swimming is a machine with its 5th straight championship: 1. Auburn 566 2. Stanford 397 3. Arizona 371 4. Florida 321 5. Texas 296 6. Northwestern 221 7. Michigan 207 8. California 176 9. Southern California 145 10. Minnesota 131 It would be quite an accomplishment for any mid-major individual swimmer to gain a point at the DI championships. Only nine non-BCS type schools scored any points in the men's championships. Even most of these have swimming traditions. 18. Southern Methodist 58 20. Hawaii 41 26. Brigham Young 23 25. California-Irvine 32 30. Yale 13.5 33. California-Santa Barbara 11 34. Harvard 6 35. Oakland 3.5 37. George Mason 2 Quote
star2city Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 Dakota Student: UND Club LAX Takes Another Shot Of the people who make up the lacrosse team's roster, there is a collection of students from Oregon, Washington, New Jersey, Minnesota and North Dakota. This variety of locales provides the team with players that are experienced and also fills the gaps that are left because of lower interest levels in the Midwest. Lacrosse is starting to become more popular here and many of the players played at their respective high schools in Minnesota, but the east and west coasts still remain the most popular markets for the sport. "Thanks to the aviation program and Minnesota schools that have started playing lacrosse, we have had a good turnout," Law said. If UND started a DI lacrosse team, have to believe that there would be at least 20 non-recruited walk-on candidates enrolling annually at UND from out-of-state. With DI LAX schools predominantly private, the relative low tuition of UND would give allow a DI option for prospective western or midwestern middle class lax athletes. Quote
bincitysioux Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Yet another victory for the Univeristy of North Dakota in a heated Sioux-Bison matchup. UND 10, NDSU 8 North Dakota scored to begin the fourth quarter going up two goals. The Bison fought for one more goal in the fourth and despite out-shooting North Dakota 10 to 3 in the fourth quarter, NDSU just couldn't find the net. UND got another one late in the game to seal the deal. This proves to be the beginning of an intense rivalry. Quote
