UND92,96
As noted above, there are 2-3 other JC ball players who have UND high on their list. We have room for five additions as Blackwell, Wills and Probst will not be back. It sounds like Koenig is healing up well. Wow, from an original recruiting class of four high schoolers (Wills, Blackwell, Probst and Bledsoe), plus four transfers (Koenig, Gutter, Phillips and Miller), we're down to three remaining players less than a year later? UND92,96
A potential starting frontcourt of Koenig, Dryburgh and Kruse would certainly be an upgrade over this past season's, especially in terms of rebounding.
choyt3
We might be a year too late if Brad Huse would be a POTENTIAL replacement for a head men's coach position at UND. Huse touts Montana roots, coaching success in public forum.

At least we can wait another year to see if Smith can have three straight great seasons at Mayville. If so, then I'm convinced he's the man for the job. UND Fan
A potential starting frontcourt of Koenig, Dryburgh and Kruse would certainly be an upgrade over this past season's, especially in terms of rebounding. I agree, if healthy, they could be a very good front line although I don't know if Dryburgh and Koenig would normally be on the floor at the same time. I don't know enough about their individual games. There are a couple of other kids that may also be able to contribute on the front line right away. We will see if we can sign them. Bledsoe had his surgery either yesterday or today. It is a serious injury - he might not be back. Harkins is seeing a specialist about his shin splints. That kid has a lot of talent - I sure hope they can find a way to solve his problem.
teamsioux
There is no doubt Bledsoe's future is uncertain. Any one who follows the NBA just seen how Amare Stoudamire tried to come back from similar injury and had to to shut down again right away. It was getting close to a year from his surgery. UND92,96
With the apparent departures of Blackwell, Probst and Wills, I would think that signing Travis Mertens would be a good idea. Additionally, I suspect the signing of a juco guard is a must. Besides Doyle, and perhaps incoming freshman Rayfield, the pickings look pretty slim since it appears unlikely Bledsoe will play any time soon, if at all. I don't know what the situation is with Mertens but agree he may be a good pick-up for us. I do know that we have three other offers out right now - if all three agree to join us, that would take care of all the available scholarship $. hollywoodstar
There are for sure two more offers to Juco players. One UND has a great shot at the other it's more of a long shot, but you never know. As for Mertens I don't think there is any real chance of him heading to UND, I have been told it's junior college all the way and that he is headed to either Lake Region or North Dakota Science. Are all three offers to jucos/dI transfers?

I had heard Mertens was going the juco route also, but it's hard to explain why this would have been in the Herald a couple of weeks ago if he was so sure he was going to a juco: The three-year starter for the Firebirds said he has not decided where he will play his college ball, but he is considering Augustana (S.D.) College, Concordia (Minn.), Mayville State and UND.
UND Fan
Are all three offers to jucos/dI transfers? All three are juco players. It appears we have a very good shot at getting two of them and a decent shot at the third!
UND92,96
All three are juco players. It appears we have a very good shot at getting two of them and a decent shot at the third! Of course I'd love to see a repeat of the 1989-90 season--Vonesh came back from an injury; Guldseth and Burkett transferred in; Jacobson and Robertson were recruited (along with Gardner who red-shirted); and together with holdovers Boschee and Ayinla, a team which was terrible the season before became great. However, I can't help but notice that the two teams that played in the region title game a few weeks ago--Winona State and Northern State--were comprised almost entirely of high school recruits. I guess my point/question is: how realistic is it that a large group of newcomers, no matter how talented they may be, will be molded into a good team? It rarely seems to work (see recent Bemidji State teams as Exhibit A), but anything is possible I suppose. I fully realize that the staff no longer has the time to recruit and develop high school talent. They need to win big next year, and bringing in a bunch of transfers is probably the only way that can happen in such a short period of time. I'm just skeptical because there have been so many talented transfers in recent years (Lolar, Austin, Allen, Swan, Phillips, etc.) who haven't panned out. I don't think that part of the equation will be replicated.
coachdags
LOL... Thats Funny...Jake has hired Kyle Green from Lewis University to be his #1 Asst Coach Love Rumors..? Rich Glas to UNI as Asst Coach Director of Basketball Operations..? Two different sources.

Yes, he was hired after the 88-89 season, which led directly to that outstanding recruiting class.
UND Fan
Why won't those three be back, players or coaches decision? Until school is out I really hate to provide this info but.... issues included grades, more playing time, personal problems, etc.
sucka
Oh, record for All Time wins at UND. I guess that doesn't count for anything. Lets face it, UND is not exactly a haven for basketball recruits. Are there really that many top recruits in this area as opposed to kids near Winona, SCSU, MSU-Mankato, etc... And need I remind all of you of the upset minded, potential Top 25 next year, D-1 team just south of Grand Forks. I bet they are going to be bringing in all of the local recruits for the next 50 years because of their great win against WISC. UND should just fire Glas and disband the basketball program for good, there is no way they will be able to compete with the AG School from Fargo. UND92,96
I assume Jake is at the final four right now. Is Glas there? I have to think there may be something to this rumor. Jake has never been a head coach before. He's talked often in the media about how much he respects Rich and how much he learned from him. Wouldn't it stand to reason that Jake may want a veteran coach (particularly one he knows very well) on his staff? Obviously Rich knows that the majority of fans would like for UND to go in a different direction, so what would keep him here, particularly now that Jeff's football career is over? petey23
I have it from a very reliable source that Glas will join Ben Jacobson at UNI as an assistant coach next season. I cannot say who the sopurce is, but I trust it to be reliable. Buning's job just got real interesting and his decision will be very telling as to the direction that UND basketball and UND athletics plans to go!!!!
