Goon
Notice at the end of the box score that Matt Green got a 10 minute misconduct... December 26, 2002 SYDNEY, Nova Scotia - The United States opened the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship with a 5-1 loss here tonight against defending gold medalist Russia (1-0-0). Forward Alexander Ovechkin registered a hat trick less than midway through the game to pace Russia, which never trailed. Russia opened scoring in the first period while skating with three seconds remaining on a power play. Ovechkin one-timed a shot into the top of the net on a cross-ice pass to give Russia a 1-0 lead 16:20 into the game. Russia then went up 2-0 on a wrist shot by Ovechkin past the glove hand of U.S. goaltender James Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./University of Maine) with just :11 remaining in the period. The United States dominated play in the early minutes of the second period and broke through in the scoring column when forward Patrick O'Sullivan (Sterling Heights, Mich./Mississauga Ice Dogs) snapped a shot above the glove hand of Russian goaltender Andrei Medvedev at 2:44. Defenseman Ryan Whitney (Scituate, Mass./Boston University) was credited with an assist on the play. Russia answered to go up 3-1 after defenseman Kirill Koltsov accepted a pass on a breakaway and deked Howard before depositing the puck in the lower right corner of the net on a short-handed marker at 7:17. Russia took a 4-1 advantage as Ovechkin was sitting on the left-side doorstep and one-timed a pass by team captain Yuri Trubachev from across the crease. In the final frame, Russia extended its lead to 5-1 at 7:06 on a breakaway goal when Trubachev scored through the five-hole of U.S. goaltender Bob Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y./Providence College), who entered the game in the second period. O'Sullivan and Ovechkin were named the players of the game for their respective teams. The United States (0-1-0) next faces Switzerland (1-0-0) in the second game of the preliminary round for both teams. The game can be heard live at www.usahockey.com. Switzerland defeated Belarus (0-1-0) earlier today, 4-2. In other action, Finland (1-0-0) downed Germany (0-1-0) by a score of 4-0. Host Canada and Sweden play later tonight. U2Bad1
any chance US could be back before the CC series if they dont do so well??not that i am wishing the US bad luck or anything
sprig
They only need to finish in the top 3 in their pool to make the medal round that starts Jan. 2. Highly likely they'll make that, as Russia was their toughest competition in their pool.
U2Bad1
so basically with this first loss the US can still win the gold medal.
sprig
Yes, USA up on the Swiss 2-1 after two. Two SHG's by Chris Higgins. Parise being interviewed (recorded) between periods.

ScottM
Nice to see Matt Greene is honing his "enforcer" skills. PIM
sprig
Greene and Jones each with assists on Higgins two SHG's today. Very apparent that Greene is the dman leveling opponents constantly; taking a few penalties also.
sprig
USA dominating Belarus, as expected, today. 4-0 after one, goals by Kesler (Ohio St.), McConnel (Boston U.), Parise, and Whitney (also BU). Shots 20-3, Greene continues to level opponent forwards. Between periods they are talking about the '05 tourney at the REA. All teams will have their own locker rooms. The WJC committee was obviously impressed with the building.
sprig
7-1 after two. Guyer and Tallackson (2) score in the second. Greene with two more penalties.
sprig
Parise gets a PPG in the third; final 8-2.
YaneA
Sprig-- So that was two goals for Parise against Belarus? Great for him and the U.S. team. But, I still wish he and the two welcoming Matts were gonna be back for the CC series!
sprig
Right, two goals and an assist for Parise. One assist for Jones. Two minors for Greene. That's it. http://www.usahockey.com/usa_hockey/main/h..._usablr_021230/ USA vs. Slovakia tomorrow at noon.
jk
This link has some nice WJC photos. There is a wonderful photo about 20th from the bottom of our pal Matt Greene leveling a Swiss boy. http://www.sportsline.com/photos/gallery/HOCKEY/OTHER
sprig
USA just killed a 1:20 5x3 for Slovakia with Greene and Jones in the box. Greene then gets a roughing on a good, big, clean hit and the USA is back on the PK. That one is killed also as Greene gets out with a second left in the period and delivers one more Slovakian leveling hit (should have know better than to skate by the Pbox with time running out). Score 1-0 Slovakia after one. SOG's Slovakia 10-8. Goepfert in goal again; seems to have become the number one guy. Howard apparently a bit off in confidence after getting shelled by Russia, most or all of which were not his fault.
sprig
Higgins (Yale), after several great moves, ties it at 1-assists Helminen (Mich) and Kesler (Ohio St). Parise puts USA up 2-1 40 secs later, roofing the shot with a dman draped all over him assisted by Suter (Wisco recruit) and Brown (OHL). Second period ends with USA up 2-1 (no penalties on Greene that period).
dagies
Good for the UND boys. I think Shattuck was finally beaten in the MAC tournament, Stafford tied with Crosby for team lead in points at 10 for the tournament. I don't think they play any more games based on what I could find on the site.
sprig
Brown with a PP goal late in the third on nice pass from Parise puts US up 3-1. Penalty, BTW, was on Slovak of Slovakia (no kidding), who got a high sticking, followed by a 10 minute misconduct for yapping, followed by a game misconduct for ripping his stick against the glass. This may help him bypass Greene as the penalty leader in the tourney. Game over; USA wins 3-1 and finishes second in Pool A, Russia gets the bye, and USA will play the cross-over game against the third place team in Pool B, on Jan. 2 (winner of Czechoslovakia/Sweden game tonight). Parise=Player of the Game Award If you have the directtv sports pak, Thursday's game will be on YES network, I believe at 3PM ET.
sprig
The Czechs did beat Sweden today, 3-1. Complicating matters, however, is that if Canada beats Finland tonight, Finland and the Czech Republic finish with identical records in Pool B (since they tied head to head). Not sure, then, what the tiebreaker is, nor which team will face the US on Thursday. Update: According to Canadian broadcast during the Canada/Finland post game, in the medal round semi's Canada will play the winner of USA-Czech Republic, while Russia will play the winner of Slovakia/Finland. sprig
Helminen (Jones, Kesler) and Parise (Brown) have scored midway through period 1 and lead the Czechs 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Period ends 2-0. Two penalties on USA, one on Greene (who else ) Czechs with a penalty at the buzzer. USA PP to start period 2.
YaneA
Thanks for posting the updates, sprig. I'm interested in how the Sioux boys are doing at the tourney but the "listen live" site doesn't support my lowly Mac so thanks for being my ears. sprig
Both teams score two in the second. 4-2 USA after two. US goals by Kesler -PP (Higgins, Whitney) and Suter (Higgins, Kesler). Parise and Higgins doing very well on the faceoffs, especially on the PK. Jones with a penalty that period, but none for Greene.
PCM
With 6:10 minutes left, USA leads the Czech Republic 4-3. The Czechs scored on a costly giveaway right at the side of the goal. US now on the power play. The Czechs are really pouring it on heading down the stretch.
YaneA
Thanks, Taz. I'm listening to the last six minutes of this one-goal game. C'mon, USA!
