I don't know why people frame it this way. Yes they didn't win a title with him. But there is more to a program than just titles. Regular season success, selling tickets, program prestige, putting guys in NHL. Penn State is probably trying to make clear they are a serious hockey program despite the lack of history.

I doubt Penn State or Mckenna really cares they didn't win a title. Penn State gets the relevance and prestige from landing a top pick. He will forever be a "former Penn State player" who is in the NHL to Penn State. Mckenna got the money and probably won't care because he got to be at a big school, have fun, and then make the NHL.

Penn State's 2024 Frozen Four run and getting Gavin McKenna & Jackson Smith means they're serious about competing short & long term. They will continue to get talent, which means their roster won't just be a bunch of relatively random lower-mid tier players like they used to have

Pegula spent that $750k, which is merely a rounding error to him. The Penn State University administration didn't take $750k out of their athletics budget to give to McKenna. Seems like a bunch of fans across the country (disproportionately Gophers fans) keep bringing up the money without the context. It's odd but whatever

And the 750k they spent to buy out Motzko's last year wasn't found in the couch cushions.

If the Badgers win this, I'll gladly eat crow for what I've said about Hastings so far at Wisconsin. Just been confused by a lot of their roster construction & been skeptical

Part of the coaches job is to tap into NIL, galvanize the boosters, "figure it out." So even if it wasn't Penn State itself, it speaks to the program's ability to adapt to current times (obviously helps to have a big alumni base). And Mckenna's a "status symbol" for the program which will help with recruiting / branding / etc.

I think we are going to see the list of big time programs in hockey including Michigan State, Notre Dame, ASU, Penn State. They have money and facilities. The current college hockey blue blood programs will be fine but I just see programs Michigan Tech, Miami, CC, Mankato, St. Cloud, Omaha, maybe even UMD fading. All these young kids see the facilities plus the Big Ten and these big brand schools have more brand power than ever.

In other words, putting NIL aside, why go to CC or Tech when you can go to Penn State. Seems to be a no brainer for a kid these days. of course if its Penn State vs a blue blood, it may be a harder decision.

He’s building a dynasty. Takes time, and you can take that to the bank.

He can take the broadcasting career as far as he chooses to go.

Exactly. He’s got the passion for it. Hopefully he continues to support the college game.

I see UMD fading once the Plante pipeline is tapped out. Hermantown isn't enough to sustain their success.

Only one Wisconsin native on the badgers? Wow.

State of Wisconsin doesn't produce that much talent and the Granato years turned many in state kids off of the Badgers
