izzi6
I'm writing a debate speech in support of the Sioux nickname/logo, and I need to know how many logos are in the Engelstad Arena. I know I've seen a number somewhere, but I can't remember where... and I've been to http://theralph.com, it doesn't say anything there. If anyone would tell me it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks =) Elizabeth

SiouxMeNow
why would the actual # of logo's matter?
SiouxMeNow
...after all...it's QUALITY...not quantity that should count...:-)
tboneund
I would suggest contacting the arena, I am sure they would help you.
MinnesotaNorthStar
Don't forget to bring up the SI poll where 80% of (native americans? minorities?) support nicknames like ours...someone else can find the link. tboneund
You could also include that all seven tribes of the Sioux Nation have filed official statements against the use of the "Sioux" name and logo. Discussing both sides of an issue will always increase your credibility and prove that you truly researched the entire issue. If you are for the name/logo I would suggest discussing the opposing view and why it is wrong. The following links may help you research the topic further. Oh, and be sure to make fun of PCSU (St. Cloud) a lot Be gentle now, I'm a Husky fan and a future PCSU student. However, I totally agree with you. Kurtz and Saigo and all the others are extremists. I wore a sign over my jersey one year that read 'I support the Sioux logo.' Kurtz (that's our AD) approached me and told me that if I didn't remove the sign immediately, I'd be escorted from the building. This went on while the people protesting the name were jammed into the concourse holding signs like 'How would you like it if we called you the Fighting Crackers?' and my favorite (which shows how misinformed some of these people REALLY are...) 'Stop committing genocide against the Sioux!' Seriously now, I'm wondering if that blonde white girl holding that sign even belonged at an institution of higher learning. OK, I'll step off my soapbox now. To answer someone's question, the number of logos mattered because one of the contentions is that it would be very costly for the University to change the logo. Thanks tboneund for the sites, although I've been to all of them. This is a favorite topic of mine... I also wrote a ten-page research paper on this subject for my rhetoric class, so I've been involved in this topic for awhile now. Again, thanks to everyone that replied. Ouch...I actually have a friend that attends SCSU, she just laughs at all the grief I give her about the school (mostly hockey-related...as in the infamous Dahl Stahl), of course, she's not an Avs fan either Was that protest two years ago at the Concrete Center? My friend and headed down there and took crap for our jersies (complete with new Sioux logo). The weirdest part was my friend was basically being called a racist by someone with a swastika on their sign (he's Jewish). My favorite sign had to be "Would you have a priest as a mascot?" Because Providence,Wake Forest, and Fargo Shandly HS do... They don't really like doing research there. The majority of fans though were great and apologized to us for the asinine display we had too witness...other than the game And you don't go there yet, so you can still make fun of them

Mostly it's just the carpet-clad lesbian professors and their cronies who burn incense and spend their days writing beat poetry pretending they're flower children. Yeah, most of us want Dahl to be fired... he's worthless and we know it. And none of the fans are really the PC kind that SCSU has the reputation for. Yeah, I have my last name on my SCSU jersey (Petersen) and one of the protesters asked me how I'd like to have a team named the Fighting Scandinavians. I asked him what he thought the Vikings were, then pointed out his hat... it was a Notre Dame Fighting Irish hat. God, I love hypocrites. Do you know that SCSU took down garland from the Atwood Center because someone complained it was promoting a religious holiday? GARLAND. Not even adorned with Christmas lights. I swear. I was probably part of the 'majority of fans' you were talking about... I spent the entire pre-game apologizing to Sioux fans and arguing with protesters. I even was approached by two Native Americans who told me that they loved the logo and nickname. Sure, I can make fun of it. I'll still make fun of it when I go there. A few friends and I are planning on starting a student organization: 'Students Against Hypersensitive Political Correctness.' petey23
It was a shame that Stearns County Community College faded down the stretch this year and were denied the opportunity to hang yet another NCAA PARTICIPATION BANNER in the National concrete center to furthur the illustrious history of SCCC Hockey. WPoS
is it just me, or as soon as I drive into Stearns County ont eh way up to the cabin, I feel my IQ drop and then rise again as soon as I leave the county? I think we should name all sports teams after colors, because THOSE aren't racist are they? Heck, I'd support a team called the "Invading Germans", but I'd prolly get called a Nazi.... As far as the Sioux logo and such, many people that I know have no problem with it...keep it IMO and let everyone whine...it is always nice to know htat it is such an important thing inthe world that needs changing as a school mascot/logo... The Sicatoka
Let's look at this from the macro- and micro- perspectives. The macro perspective is this: "Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no." Source: Peter Harris Research Group, Inc., as reported in Sports Illustrated, March 4, 2002, page 69. Methodology: The pollsters interviewed 351 Native Americans (217 living on reservations, 134 living off). The responses were weighted according to US census figures for age, race, gender, and the distribution of Native Americans living on and off reservations. Margin of error: Plus or minus 4 percent. There can be no clearer macro message on the issue. The micro perspective, of someone of direct interest, is found here: http://www.uscho.com/news/2002/11/18_005487.php As Teddy Roosevelt would say, Marc Ranfranz is "the man who matters;" he is "the man in the arena." (I'm not a Gopher fan. ) Our coach ought to be fired and our athletic director needs to be deported to France. Then we might be able to make a season without choking in the second half and in the playoffs. Off-topic of this message, I saw Lessard won the Hobey Baker. That's irritating. Elizabeth I couldn't agree more. Dahl isn't a BAD coach, he just coaches incorrectly. He'd be much better as a football coach because I think he was even trained in that, and there is less games to be played allowing his strategies still to be fresh late in the season. Hargrove of the Indians was fired because he couldn't get the Indians to win. Dahl should be fired because he can't get the team to stop swooning. And he's more atuned to being a comedian with his Dahl-isms than anything else. Saigo is a well-meaning idiot and the AD is a moron. Other than that, SCSU is doing just fine athletically. Diggler
I listen to PA and Dubay the friday of the SCSU-UM RS series this year. They interviewed Dahl and he said pie-r-squares like three or four times. You gotta give the man credit, he scores incredibly high on the unintentional comedy scale.
