Then you upset the power conferences who end up losing a couple of at large berths. that would be just one more reason for the P5 to break away from the NCAA or create their own division.

True, and I am sure every year they get pissed when a non p5 team especially a lower level conference pulls an upset on one of them.

Yep, especially if it turned out to be a sixteen seed. ;-)

The day a 16 (especially a play in 16) beats a 1 the whole basketball world would be in flames and we would see a split.

I think it would be the opposite. Everyone loves a Cinderella story (team) except for the team that was upset. The P5 wouldn't push for a split because of an upset, maybe if it became a common occurrence, they might make some noise. But how likely will it be that a 16 seed beats a 1 seed? About as likely as as it is for a 12 seed Big Sky Team to make a run in the the conference tournament and win the auto bid...it's not very likely. And on the outside chance it does happen, they would most likely get more exposure during their play-in or 1st round game than they would as a regular seed.

Time to embrace the change Darrell. If after a few years this format doesn't work, and God forbid, the 12 seed wins it every year, the conference will re-evaluate and see what is the best direction to go. In the meantime, maybe try to plan an outing to Reno and enjoy some tournament basketball...

I want UND to play on a Thursday not a Tuesday or Wednesday. The goal is to be in the dance not in a play-in game.

I want UND playing on a Monday night in April.  That probably isn't going to happen.  I would prefer UND playing on a Tuesday or Wednesday rather than not playing at all in the Tournament.  Opening the conference tournament to all teams, just like happens in almost every other league in the country, gives everyone a chance to play in the Tournament.

Or better yet....get rid of the damn play in games. You win a conference title only to play another conference title team to be the #16 seed team in the bracket. I would rather see a BSC team play a #1 then another #16 seed team.

Last I checked, the credit earned for winning a play-by-play game is the same as a win in any other round. Not all bad if your going to be a low seed.

You may not be aware of this, but the play-in games are not automatically #16 vs #16.  And they are not all low level conference title winners.

Eight teams—the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams—will play in the First Four (the successor to what had been popularly known as "play-in games" through the 2010 tournament). The winners of these games advance to the round of 64.

This years teams included Old Miss from the SEC, BYU from the West Coast, Dayton from the Atlantic 10, and Boise State from the Mountain West.  All of these were #11 teams.  All were at-large teams and the last 2 were 25-8 on the season.

When a conference bids a tournament out to a city, that city normally wants all the teams there to maximize the number of fans. So the conference has all teams come as part of the deal. The city just doesn't care if they go to the games or not, but they do want people in hotels, restaurants, and in Reno's case, casinos. Reno pays the Big Sky big bucks to host, and they want tourism dollars in return. Fans can make travel arràngements months in advance. Big Sky schools generally have it cheaper as they can buy airline and hotel reservations months in advance, compared to the past when its a week in advance.

Sioux Falls doesn't get many tourists from their Slummit teams, as USD and SDSU are home teams. The Slummit enjoys the gate and Sioux Falls gets ESPN publicity.

As in how dare you talk about the SL or the nature of your SL conversation? What part made him perk up.

Just general chatting with the UNDs football QB circa 1958. It was an odd glare. Wasn't sure what to make of it...probably just a guy that's like "oh you're on that side of the fence. I've heard lots from both sides the past few years."

Not a fan of Reno, not sure of how many fans will show, but I will be optimistic and hope for the best.  I know it gets down to money, and if the Big Sky thinks its fans will travel to Reno, then they get ticket money and TV money.  If fans don't travel, it will be empty seats, but they will still get TV money, and they will move it to another site in a few years.  I presume Reno will do a good job of hosting and marketing it to other tourists as well. I've seen some pretty empty conference tournament games on TV and hope the kids dont have to play in an empty arena. Expanding the tourney to all teams was a good move to help get more fans in.  Now lets hope UND is playing for a championship there!

The Horizon League is going to a "neutral" court too, as the Detroit Red Wings new arena will replace the on campus higher seeds courts. Not exactly neutral as Detroit and Oakland will effectively be home teams.

A fixed venue makes planning for ESPN all the easier.

After nobody shows up, it will eventually go back to campuses.

Sorta like what hockey is discussing.

I guess instead it goes to Boise.
