UND Griz Blackout Game Day Thread

Much of UND's passing game is now play action based under this offensive coordinator.

You can't run play action if the defense doesn't believe you will run the ball.

All said above it true but if this team can not have their QB make a straight up 7 step drop and throw it with some success this offense will continue to be what it is...a below average FCS offense.

Don't agree.

Not saying UND is where it needs to be offensively, because they aren't, but if an offense can effectively run the ball, play-action passes really are effective.

See NDSU and even Montana. These teams focus on running the ball, and once they can do that, then those exciting deep passing plays can happen. UND is hoping to get to that point, but first they need to eliminate penalties and consistently gain better on first down running the ball.

Both SU and MT are poor examples. They run the ball...yes but both Wentz and Johnson can drop straight back and throw it effectively and often if needed without every pass play being play action. Right now UND can't do that.

Nearly every pass-play NDSU and Montana run in normal down and distance situations is play-action pass.

And here lies the issue..." normal down and distance". Both SU and MT have success with play action because they use it 1st and ten, 2nd and 4 and 3rd and 1. UND likes to save play action for 3rd and 9.

It was better the last two games though. We've had a lot more success on 1st and 2nd.

No argument here. UND needs to improve the running game, but that is happening week after week due to the inexperience of the offensive line when the season started.
