  1. Interesting how different the standards are at Texas' flagship university versus North Dakota's flagship university.  In Texas, a .664 winning percentage and having a winning season in 16 out of 17 years is a fire-able record.  In North Dakota, winning games at a 45% clip and turning in 3 winning seasons in 9 years apparently equals job security.

Well, they always do say the do things bigger in Texas.................

The standard is absolutely different at UND vs Texas. As it should be.

  2. NDSU went though a transition; been to NCAA tournament.

SDSU went through a transition; been to NCAA tournament.

Stop using the transition excuse! It's been shown, right here in this region, that a DII to DI transition is not the ultimate barrier. (queue nickname issue for next excuse)

This just cracks me up. If you are a Jones supporter, you get jacked for bringing up something previously discussed yet the "whack em" supporters just bitch about the same !@#$ over and over and over.

  3. Enough with the "transition" excuse! We cannot use that anymore (not that we should have ever used it in the first place).

This is where it gets frustrating. Try to lay down some objective facts/information or assemblance of supporting logic and the obvious happens. So then I try to just go with innuendo like everyone else and i get ripped for no supporting evidence.

Bet Sac State wanted to whack their coach a few years back.

  4. Here is a list of each Big Sky coach, including their record at their current school, and the number of years at their current job:

    Brian Jones--9 years--127-152 (.455)

    Randy Rahe (Weber St.)--9 years--180-103 (.636)

    Don Verlin (Idaho)--7 years--110-113 (.493)

    Brian Katz (Sac. St.)--7 years--76-128 (.372)

    Tyler Geving (Portland St.)--6 years--84-98 (.462)

    B.J. Hill (UNC)--5 years--76-77 (.497)

    Jim Hayford (EWU)--4 years--64-62 (.508)

    Bill Evans (Idaho St.)--3 years--24-65 (.270)

    Nick Robinson (SUU)--3 years--23-66 (.258)

    Jack Murphy (NAU)--3 years--45-51 (.469)

    Travis DeCuire (Montana)--1 year--19-11 (.633)

    Brian Fish (MSU)--1 year--7-20 (.259)

Of this group, which went through a D1 transition?

  5. Would be curious what career records are of big sky coaches while at said big sky school. The assumption being they face the same challenges we do. More specifically - non conference scheduling. Not seeking an excuse. Just a data point.

  6. So our goal is mediocrity? He should stay because he is a mediocre coach. Thanks for clarifying.

Lighten up Francis. Just curious what that looks like. Doesn't mean I accept mediocrity. Wasn't even judging the comparison. If we are going to compare - just go all the way.

  7. When analyzing a coach with a mediocre record, it's useful to compare how he did against other coaches with mediocre records and who coach under similar circumstances.

Brian Jones is a combined 3-12 against Derrin Hansen from UNO (.525 career winning %) and B.J. Hill of UNC (.496 career winning %).

I'd be curious to know all the records of all the coaches in the Big Sky. With a few exceptions, my guess they all have mediocre records.

  8. Nothing can change that? In your small mind perhaps. But if you haven't noticed, the Summit League is not the same conference it was when the Bison joined. It is fast becoming a very good Mid-Major conference. It has become a much more geographically centered conference (in UND's traditional recruiting area), with a number of traditional rivalries, good and generally improving facilities pretty much across the board, a great venue for its men's and women's basketball tournaments, and a level of interest and excitement that is building every year. Things are looking great for the Summit League.

I don't necessarily think having UND in the Summit would be good for NDSU, but there is little doubt that the addition of UND would be a win for both UND, and the Summit League as a whole.

Can't say I disagree with much of this other than classifying the Summit as a mid-major. Both the Summit and Big Sky would be classified as low-majors. Semantics I guess.

  9. Universities have been around a long time. I am sure there are buildings on every University that is as old as UND that could use updating.

Just put a damn scoreboard in the Betty! Good God.

  10. They were one win away from a dance trip last year. A last second shot and another win two years before. The results are what they are but if you can't understand the realities of the situation, including the financial part of it, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

I've stated since early in the season that the leash was likely pretty long from being close to winning the conference tournament last year (and pretty decent showing in conference tournaments the previous two years) despite a lot of other disappointments in those seasons. Expectations weren't high and the definitely lived up to it, though with a lot of closer games than most people expected. Next year is going to be pretty definitive.

Pretty well put and from a person who seems to look at all this fairly objectively. For some of us, myself included, the bias is pretty heavy. I would also be willing to bet jdub stated the same thing 80 pages ago. Ok, let's get hamster wheel "a hummin" again. I'll start. BullCit.

  11. That's what you pulled from everything? I see you decided not to read anything else I have said about the shortcomings, but hey whatever floats your boat, Art.

Nixing the Adidas deal is way down the list for me, but it is a cherry on top that pretty much encompasses the entire situation and the overall attitude of the head coach in general.

Blown out of proportion? Nobody is blowing it out of proportion - it is what it is. There is/was a departmental deal in place spanning multiple sports. You are clearly missing the prinicipal point here on this: What has Jones done to earn that type of sway? Is he going to foot the bill for the monetary difference between a Nike and Adidas deal? I'm told (from a very good source) the Adidas deal is substantially better than anything Nike is willing to do for any sport.

If I'm the Athletic Director in that situation, and everyone else is on board, I tell Jones to get in line and be a team player because it's the best deal for the UND Athletic Department. But maybe I'm being too unrealistic. :silly:

Hey, I like Nikes better than Adidas too, as does the majority of the population, but that's not the point.

Whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. Wasn't being critical of your posts. Took a general look at some discussion. Not smart enough to look at your posts specifically on my phone. Just saw some shots taken at players and labeled it "venom". My bad.

  12. Feel free to look back at my posts over the course of the last month or 2. I haven't been shy about discussing the "little things" that matter a lot in the big scheme.

That should give you a better idea of what I'm referring to.....since you're asking.

Wow. Another part of the world with basketball venom. Never knew it existed. Nike/Adidas thing seems a little overblown I guess. I think if you were to ask most players what they preferred for shoes, most would say Nike. Adidas has taken strides recently with lighter shoes though.

If grades are an issue - that's a big deal though.

  13. You "rebuild" in year one and two - not year nine. If you are having a "rebuilding" year, it means something is inherently wrong at the foundation and needs to be rebuilt from the bottom up.

Every program has a "down" year. In my opinion, "down" should be 5th or 6th place given the strength of the conference (yes, I know Weber finished 8th this year). To be tied for last in the BSC is unacceptable.

Having said all that, I still maintain that the on the court coaching and wins and losses are only the start of the problem.

Care to elaborate on the last paragraph?

  14. I wouldn't call it restructuring when coaches leave for other jobs. Backfilling, maybe. When the last assistant left for USD and Craig Smith that should have told people alot about what he thought of his future at UND.

Or he may have received a 35% pay increase.

  15. Your minority opinion is not easily supported, for good reason. I have no problem agreeing with others if they align with my own opinions.

Lastly, the random titles are a bit unnecessary.

Well, it's good to hear you admit to the bias.

  16. Absolutely. To Jones, this was not a rebuilding season, that is until they started losing.

ArtVandalay is doing the same thing; claiming a "free" season is a nice way to justify keeping a poor coach.

i wouldn't have expected any other response from you Frank.

  17. And about 30 pages ago we confirmed that this was no "rebuilding" job. You rebuild with youth, players you can build around for 4-5 years. A coach doesn't rebuild with 9 transfers. Jones did not want to rebuild, he wanted a quick fix to stem the tide, hence all the transfers.

His high school recruiting has been poor in the past 3 years.

Hooker is hs recruit. Shanks is essentially a hs recruit. Cashman is a hs recruit. Crandall is a hs recruit. Seales is a hs recruit. McDermott is a hs recruit. Collins is a hs recruit. Programs "gamble" sometimes on transfers. It can be a short term solution. Hell, the Jacks have 2 transfers in their starting lineup. It doesn't always work out but to classify jones as nothing but a transfer guy just isn't true.

  18. Because Jones 17-17 record is soooo much better.

Just not gonna get into that again. Go back 40 pages for that I guess. I'm just saying, objectively speaking, if I am an AD in charge of evaluating whether or not to whack a coach, a rebuilding year after a second place year would give me pause for letting someone go. And it should.

  19. 5-6. Probably should have been 6-5 given how the last game was lost (uncalled too many men on field penalty), but that's neither here nor there.

For the supporters of a "whacking", I think this is where your case loses some steam.

  20. I know some people hate the Jones-Muss comparisons, but I'm just throwing this out there because it struck me as interesting:

    Mussman

    31-34 career record (.477)

3-8 record in final season (.273)

    Jones

    126-152 career record (.453)

    8-22 record this season (.267)

And yes, I understand Jones' overall Big Sky winning percentage is quite a bit higher than Muss's was, even with this year's debacle. And even though both had bad home records in their last/most recent seasons, at least Jones mostly lost close games. Whether that's enough to override the other numbers is anybody's guess. Also, both had/have two years left on their contracts.

What was Mussman 2nd to last season record?

  21. Maybe Jones could get a job as a Frolf (Frisbee Golf) coach?

Or maybe our very own poster Art Vandalay could get him a job in Latex.

I don't think we can worry about the level of commitment the recruits have to UND. Getting a coach in here that actually develops talent and through his coaching ability puts the team in a position to win is more important to the overall health of the program than the possible loss of a recruit or two.

    Quality "latex" reference.
