  1. That is more than a respectable showing. UNI is a good, veteran MVC team. We shot 35% from field and lost our starting big early. Didn't have Stefan or Tyler and UNI was at full force. A lot of positives to take from this game.

  2. The size of the Betty is fine. See St Mary's University which is one of the best mid major programs in the country. They play in a 3500 seat gym. But, they fill it up. Great environment. All we need is improved seating on the baselines and a nice scoreboard with video hanging from the ceiling. Figure out a way to get students in the seats and you have a great D1 basketball gym.

The current scoreboard/video situation is pretty bad.

  3. I think most of the heartburn over Jones stems not from his won-lost record, but from being frustrated with the team's play the last couple of years. The senior talent never really improved in 4 years, we turtled constantly on the road, and we appeared to play selfishly and not do the little things such as box out. Many games turned into a one on five offense. Many expected much more from the recently departed class than 17-17. He brought in a very talented group as freshmen and showed little ability to either add to them or coach em up. Whether this criticism is fair or not is another question. He may have had to coach the kids he could get and did the best he could, or he may have a discipline problem (disciplined play, not other issues). We'll know a lot more after this year.

Again, what was the indicator on a relative basis (big sky caliber) that this was a talented group?

  4. His job should've been on the line last year with his lineup of seniors. 17-17 with them makes me cringe at what the lineup of newcomers will result in.

Why is it assumed he had great players last year? Just because they were seniors doesn't make them great. Just makes them old. Those seniors were recruited during Great West days when UND was firmly planted at the bottom of the D1 chain. these players had minimal D1 offers at the time, if any. Fast forward to today and Jones is getting kids with multiple D1 offers. That alone is a signal of great progression of this program. Looks like job well done to me.

  5. I think Jones decided he didn't want to play home games against D1 schools. Prefers to play them on the road. It was challenging since his phone was ringing off the hook from D1 schools trying to come to Grand Forks this winter. Not to mention how full the basketball coffers are with money. Makes the desire to play money road games even more puzzling.

  6. What has he done at UND to deserve to be paid according to the market?

He's probably a fantastic guy, I've never met him. Possibly a great coach. However, I haven't seen results on the court to warrant a raise to anyone on our men's basketball staff that tells me we should just start handing out raises because "that's the market".

I think it is safe to say that given UND constraints, the body of work is respected within coaching community. Some folks might look at 2nd place finish in Big Sky reg season and conference tournament as a pretty good accomplishment. Especially considering your chief rival in recruiting had such a jump start in D1 transition.

  7. Coach Jones is required to play money games on the road. Playing on road is not easy especially when you consider how this team has to travel (buses, etc,). You can draw a parallel with UNI which finished the year 16-15 and 10-8 in MVC. Jake's record in ooc road games is not so hot either. The difference is UNI "gets" to play home games. Not an easy place to recruit to. Limited resources. I could go on.

  8. A more accurate comparison for UND is probably USD. USD transitioned about the same time as UND with a similar scenario as us in that their rival transitioned first (SDSU). I would argue that Coach Jones has managed the transition better than USD despite USD having a very well respected coach amongst his peers.

The SUU game was unfortunates but that stuff just happens sometimes. A 2nd place finish in our 2nd year in The Big Sky is admirable. Coach Boots would have taken that in a heartbeat.

I also think it's interesting that people think the talent in this senior class is so great. What is that being based on? Just because they are seniors and a lot of em doesn't mean they are talented above and beyond everyone else in the conference. You could make a case that the talent in this team is middle of the conference talented.

  9. According to ESPN, Sac St (#7) and UND (#12) are two of most inconsistent teams in DI men's basketball (351 total teams).

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bpi/_/sort/variationRank/order/false

Arguably a misleading stat. Big Sky probably has more parity than any league in D1. 25% of top 12 come from Big Sky. Everyone beats everyone. Shows as inconsistency. We aren't the only fan base in big sky screaming about inconsistent play I would bet.

  10. UND will be years behind NDSU in basketball if they get a win tonight. Despite the loss earlier this year, the Bison will have the last laugh if they make the NCAA tournament.

Will still be 4 years behind I believe.

  11. When is it up to the players? Do you know how much the staff has the team prepare for each opponent? Film? Practice Court? How much time does the staff break down the opposing team? I don't know the answers to these questions, but you seem to make it sound that this coaching staff just drives up to the arena and says "ok, good luck". I would find that hard to believe. Secondly, I think it's quite apparent where the issues have been this year. When this team goes awry, for example (MontanaSt @ home and @ Sac St) some players come out looking like they have it all figured themselves, you got 1 guy trying to play D, and 3 others spaced out. And 1 guy trying to do way too much on offense, or not getting into the offense(careful, before you assume that I'm trying to insinuate a certain player, that's not the case as they all have had their horrible moments. I have a feeling if you've watched our staff, that they can't even believe why our guys do what they do sometimes.

I think this might be closer to reality is when we were recruiting 4 or 5 years ago, we were so talent deficient that we desperately needed to improve in that area, so we in order to get some guys who could close the the gap we got guys who could really play, but may not understand the game really well or even have the ability to do so. I think its extremely difficult to find those complete guys especially at our level... So when you look at these guys trying to get around screens or being on the wrong side of someone on a cut... If they haven't got it by now they most likely never will. But I'm pretty sure the staff coaches those elements because thats the one thing that last years senior class was really good at... Positionally they we very good and they had to be because they didn't have alot of natural talent. If they haven't got it by now they most likely never will, doesn't make them bad people, but what we have is number of guys who have very good ability who either turn off or don't understand or carry out concepts. But lets lay some blame at them, they are veterans and can either choose for themselves to figure it out or dont. I don't state these things to be mean, because I really like our guys and still think they can do something, but after watching them I tend to think a fair amount of them "being ready" as you say is more about them than the coaches.

1st post. What this guy said.
