  1. You realize he has been coaching here for 9 years, right? Some of us have followed the program closely for more than 20 years and it has not gotten any better in the last 9 years, as indicated by his record.

Maybe next year will be better based on recruiting. I hope so because it's alot more fun when UND teams win.

I do realize that. There was also a d1 transition in there. Not gonna go into reasons as they have been covered ad nauseam in this forum. Program has a bright future.

  2. I find the low expectations that you have for North Dakota basketball very bothersome.

You call it low expectations. We call it rational thought. I am as unhappy as anyone when this team loses but choose to slap thought and logic as opposed to pitchforks.

  3. Great Job last night. First 2 seasons in Big Sky UND was near the top of the league. His first 2 years in Big Sky Jones has 3rd best league record. Which is outstanding given that UND is located in the coldest climate in Big Sky and low level of D1 in state talent. The 3rd best Big Ten record the last 2 seasons is held by Mich. St. You do not see any morons calling for Izzo to be canned. UND like the vast majority of teams will go through rebuilding years ...that is the way things are and to suggest a coaches be fired for that is objectively ludicrous and there is no AD in the country which ascribes to such lame thinking. There are always a handful of trolls and or low IQ jerks complaining about a team not the best year in and year out. UND has no objective advantage over the majority of other Big Sky teams that would warrant the high level of league success they have obtained under Jones .

    What this guy said!

  4. Agreed, must win. On a side note I picked up the Herald today hoping to read a preview on the MBB and WBB games today. The front page consisted of UND Men's Hockey (no brainier) and EGF girls hockey gfc girls basketball and a interview with a HS QB on deflated footballs(wtf, are you kidding me) no article or mention of the games today even on the inside pages.....what a joke. Being that was the main reason I picked up a copy along with the men's hockey gamer I was a little disappointed. D1 basketball should equal D1 coverage IMO.

    Same here. Hard to believe.

  5. I'm sorry but I play basketball and watch plenty and most would say good touch if that's what they meant. I'm not saying that's not what the poster meant but that's just what I'm saying. He has a good touch but definitely not good hands.

Sure but all I am saying is that when you hear a coach say a player has good hands it means he has a soft touch and/or good passer. This is the term used for that type of player.

  6. Funny you say that because I was at the game and mentioned something to some friends about him having bad hands. I like him a lot but I do not think hands are one of his positive attributes. Tired of watching Nash try to force it, would rather see Shields in there or something. I love De Rouens defense but has he had a game this year without getting to 4 fouls? It's ridiculous! Was glad to see Cashman back. The one good thing the Jones did was made sure Bolomboy didn't beat us but Senglin and others did.

Good hands in a basketball sense means good touch. Probably could be better catching ball in traffic but he certainly has good hands as defined or considered in basketball terms (touch)

  7. Why would you as a coach distance yourself from kids and not want to get to know them and care about them more than just what they do on the court.  If I have a coach who gets to know me and shows interest in my life and not just what I possess as a ball player than I am that much more inclined to go through a brick wall for that coach.  After all, a lot of the kids aren't going to the NBA anytime soon and they will be in the real world soon and you need to teach life skills and show that there is more than just what goes on during the game.  You want to build a program where your alumni donate money and come back to see games and really care about Grand Forks and UND.  Not getting to know your players I think really only hurts a coach.  Every kid is different and they don't need to like you, but they should sure respect and know that you care.

I also noticed from what I've seen that Jones in recent years hasn't had posts that are some go to players.  A lot of his recruiting seems to be guard oriented and every shooter is gonna have off nights and that is when they need to be able to feed the posts and take some pressure off the guards.  Especially with a team like Northern Colorado a post presence would have eaten them up since they didn't have much for size or depth at that position.

Curious. What makes you think Coach Jones distances himself from his players?

  8. So the und men's bball team will operate with a profit this season?

If I had to guess I would say yes. Not privy to that information. I would estimate 80k each for minn, Marquette, and utah. This might be a conservative estimate. I think UNI was a 2 for 1 so no money.

  9. Brewster took UND to the Dance in 2 years of coaching was towards the tops in the nation in rebounding, Jones is in his what 8th year and has 6 OOC road wins, a bunch of CIT trips, and is usually towards the bottom in rebounding. Yep fire Brewster and keep Jones.

Let's just cut to the chase and be done. "You're an idiot". "No, you're the idiot". "No man, I said you are an idiot!" "Well, you're a bigger idiot". Ok, next topic.

  10. So what our neighbor to the south went to the dance their first year in the Slummit, the UND women went to the dance their second year in the big sky. UND was at .500 when they started conference tournament play, a loss on the first game of the playoffs meant no dance and no CIT (they don't allow teams with losing records). That'a how good second place in the conference meant.

That's right -the Slummit. AND for the men, one game away from the dance in second year. Btw, I hope Brewster is thankful for the sword men's team is falling on to generate cash for department.

It hasn't been perfect but is nowhere close to a thread like this.

  11. A whim? You calling what Jones have done for the last almost decade, a whim?!?

The smells of some type of personal issue.

Much better transition to d1 then what Nagy at sdsu endured. All this with players no one else wanted. Appears now recruiting is on uptick. Be competitive this year and take run at it next year. Have to believe administration is happy especially considering the money brought into program via money games.

WE FINISHED 2nd IN THE BIG SKY LAST YEAR. IN OUR 2nd YEAR IN THE CONFERENCE. I REPEAT, WE FINISHED 2nd IN THE BIG SKY LAST YEAR.

  12. I forgot one other positive. Great turnout yesterday by the UND faithful. If we could get that from the fans/students every game we would soon have the best home court advantage in the conference after Weber and Montana. I would say we are in the conversation for #3 right now, but if we have a crowd like yesterday every game it would be far and away the 3rd best.

    Yes!

  13. I think the team needs to win 4 out of the next 6 to get back in the race. Doable, but they need to close out some of these tight games. A couple thoughts from the 3 game home stand.

    Positives

    - Hooker and Shanks continue to growth and get better each game. One is a soph and the other a FR so that is exciting

    - I continue to like what Tyler and TDR bring to the table they are just a little inconsistent. Tyler is very streaky, when he's on he is on, when he's cold he's cold. TDR brings great energy to the defensive side of the ball but offensive production hot/cold like Tyler.

    - Hopefully Colemans game yesterday is a sign he will get back into things. I like what he brings to the 3 spot.

    - This team plays better defense than previous teams

    - The effort is there (I have never questioned the effort of this team, which is good to see)

    Negatives

    - Rebounding - it's been mentioned plenty

    - Missed layups - Probably cost UND 2 out of 3 games.

    - Consistency - We have a lot of guys who are very inconsistent. Last year you knew Huff was good for 15 plus and Anderson would give you 12-16. then you'd have a combination of other guys getting the rest. I think Hooker is starting to get to the point where you know he is going to be there every night and maybe Shanks after the home stand, but he is still very young. Other than that, the scoring is inconsistent.

    - 3 home losses. Tough to lose your first 3 conference home games even if they were close and entertaining.

    - Shields not redshirting - He made one jump shot yesterday, but other than that was getting push around on D and looked out of place on O. I really like the young man's potential and think he will be a really good player for UND, but I think we would be a lot better as a redshirt SR. than a true frosh playing 5 minutes every 3-4 games. No way he should play more minutes over Nash and Coleman right now. I don't know the whole situation, but from an outside perspective I think he would've been better off redshirting

Overall not where UND needs to be, but they can still get back in the conference tourney race. The Big Sky tourney is going to be wide open as anyone can beat anyone this year. If they do that this year I would be fine with that, as I think next year and the year after are the years to try and make some noise with the talent the roster will have.

Great observations and pretty much spot on. I think if we continue to be competitive it really sets us up well for next year. With Geno, Seales on board. An offseason of strength and conditioning for Shanks. A body knocker like Bernstine. We will struggle at times this year. That was expected. We could easily be 4-1 at this point. See it as a positive. Especially given what we saw out of sac state and psu last night.

  14. When jonrs calls a to

Why does he go way out on the court by himself with a clip board

Does t even talk to his playas thru out the whole thing

Jones has zero contact with his players. He has told his assistants at the beginning of the year that he will talk with each player for 15 minutes before the start of the season and then do a wrap up at the end of the year for 15 minutes. He sometimes thinks to himself during timeouts because he doesn't want to risk talking to a player since he is pretty firm about the 15 and 15 method. He also travels separate from the team and stays at a separate hotel.

  15. That is true. Also, how did UND lose by 30 to that garbage he is trotting out there this year. That loss looks worse every day.

Hmmmm. Not so sure a team that took Ohio State to OT and kept Louisville close would classify as garbage.

  16. What to do at 2.5 secs is a toss-up either way in my opinion. I have seen it work both ways and fail both ways. I do hate the call timeout and draw up a 3/4 court pass. That seems to never work. I think a half court shot is actually a better alternative to that. It would have been a nice win but it also isn't a terrible loss. Sac state has nice team this year. Pretty excited about what is to come the next few years.

  17. I think it is safe to assume that Crandall is red shirting. There is no hard and fast rule in determining whether or not to redshirt. It is usually a mutually agreed upon decision between coach and player. Certainly a player can say, "I am not red shirting" but the coach is the one who makes the decision each game regarding who plays. There is no declaration made anywhere before season starts. A coach can look back on the season and see that a certain player didn't play a second. That player would now be eligible to be given a red shirt year.

  18. If Jones can't get his guys to win on the road in the first couple months of the season, its difficult to win it during conference play the rest of the season. I know you only like to look at conference play and only conference play, but both OOC and conference games feed off each other. You need to win on the road to be successful, name the last team to go to the dance with a losing road record. Yes Jones is 10-10 in road conference play but 11-26 overall (including this season) on the road since joining the Big Sky isn't something to be proud of.

I know you like to look at non conference play and non conference play only.
